It’s late in the evening of the next day and Damon sits at his father’s desk. Working on documenting some files and paying some bills. Doing some administrative stuff for his dad. A glass of whiskey and a thin cigar accompany him, a record of a piano concert of Rachmaninoff playing in the background. Damon closes his eyes to feel the music as he takes a sip of his whiskey.

Suddenly the door slams open and Brandon barges in. “Who the fuck does that bitch think she is? Just because she’s your family, doesn’t make her stand above anyone else. She doesn’t have the right to challenge me! She-”

While Brandon is caught up in venting his frustration and anger,he doesn’t notice that Damon slowly gets up. A very dark look in his eyes, his wolf on edge. Damon raises his hand to silence Brandon.

Brandon looks like a deer caught in headlights and bows his head submissively. “I’m so-”

“Don’t.” Damon says bluntly. “I suggest you watch your tone, and your attitude towards your future Alpha.”

Brandon looks at Damon wide eyed, fear evident in his gaze.

“Close the door and stand behind that chair over there.” Damon gestures to one of the chairs that are placed behind the desk. “You can wait until I’m ready to listen to you.”

Damon returns to his task while Brandon quietly closes the door and takes his place behind the chair. Damon doesn’t care that Brandon has to wait for him.

After a while, Damon looks back up. Straight at Brandon, who looks to the floor instantly.

“Sit.” Brandon immediately scoots over and sits down in his chair, Damon’s dark gaze never leaves Brandon, making Brandon squirm in his seat. “What did you want to tell me?” Damon asks quietly, but sternly.

“I- err,” Brandon looks to the hands in his lap. “Never mind, it’s nothing, Alpha.”

“Tell me, something about a bitch?”

“I mean,” Brandon still doesn’t dare to say anything.

“Speak!” Damon roars, using his Alpha command.

“The new girl is giving me a hard time, sir. She challenged me this afternoon and it makes my wolf feel on edge. He hasn’t been on edge ever since-” Brandon looks down at his hands again, fumbling with the hem of his shirt. “Ever since Sophie died, I’ve never felt so on edge, I never had such a hard time reigning him in. I never had to stop him from doing things that I would regret later.” Brandons voice becomes quieter and quieter the longer he speaks, until his voice is only but a whisper.

“I understand your frustration, I understand that you are still mourning, but that your wolf is already on the lookout for a new female to call your mate. I even understand that it must be so very tempting to give into your wolve’s urges to mate at one hand, but that it hurts just to even look at another woman, let alone open up to a woman, on the other hand. That’s just how nature works, but it’s not giving you the right to barge in here like you own the place. Have some respect, not only for me, your future Alpha, but also for the other wolves around. Whether they are female, male, family, not related, it doesn’t matter.”

Brandon looks down again, “I’m sorry Alpha, I just couldn’t control it. Thank you for calming my wolf down. He knows his place now.”

“I truly hope so.” Damon looks at him a little less sternly. “If there’s anything, you can always come and talk to me, or to my dad. We are here for you, we are here to help you carry your burden and help you with your mourning. Just do it the right way next time.”

Brandon nods and gets up from his chair, “Thank you, Alpha.”

It’s the same evening that Sasha just gets out of the shower, when she hears someone knocking on her door. “Hang on a second, I need to get dressed!” She hollers out. She hurries and quickly takes some comfortable clothes to put on and runs to the door. When she opens it she stands face to face with her green eyed hero.

“Hey,” he looks a little unsure, “can I come in?”

She further opens the door for her. “Sure,” when he walks into her apartment, she closes the door behind him and walks after him into her living room. “If you don’t mind, I’m going to dry my hair for a second, and put some proper clothes on, I just came out of the shower.

Roy nods.

“Make yourself comfortable, take something to drink from the fridge if you’re thirsty.” She smiles. His dark, uncertain eyes look at her intently, as if searching for something in the depths of her eyes.

Sasha turns around and walks into her bedroom. When she closes the door behind her, she leans against it. What is it with this man and his intense looks? Why does he look at her that way? Could he be her mate? No, she would have known. She would have felt the tingles when they touched. Then why? Why is this guy looking at her like he wants to devour her, eat her alive?

When she comes back out, she sees Roy on her couch, with a bottle of water in his hands.

“Hey,” She smiles when he looks her way. She takes a seat on the armchair that is placed to the side.

“Hey,” he smiles back, but his smile doesn’t reach his eyes. He leans forward and lets his elbows rest on his knees. “Wet hair looks good on you,” he winks, but still there's no glint in his eyes.

Sasha shrugs, “what did you want to talk to me about?”

“I err,” Roy looks unsure again. “I wanted to explain why I pulled back yesterday.”

“But you don’t have to, there’s no need.” Sasha quickly interferes.

Roy raises his hand to stop her from talking “But I want to.”

Sasha moves from the armchair to the couch, right next to him and takes his cheeks in her hands. “You don’t have to, Roy, from the looks in your eyes, I can see you’re a broken man. Just as I am broken. I know how it feels to be broken, I’ve been broken for a long time. You can tell me when you’re ready. I can tell that you’re not ready, not yet.

I do feel that there’s something between us. We may not be mates, but there’s definitely something. Maybe, just maybe we can find comfort in each other. Just as long as we haven’t found our mates.”

His eyes are sad, sorrowful. They’re telling her so much stories of hurt, of everything that he has been through. He looks so vulnerable right now. Sasha feels like she wants to make him forget it all, even if it’s for just a little while. Sasha leans forward, closes her eyes and kisses him.
