Chapter 14

Veronica awakened to the feel of kisses being trailed over her bare chest the next morning and sighed at how good it felt.

“Finally, you’re awake,” Bruno murmured.

She smiled as she looked down at where he lay against her chest. Running her fingers through his hair she sighed happily, “I love you.”

“I love you too, Meine Geliebte. What is on the agenda for today since you don’t have to go to work for the ogre?”

She smacked his arm. “Bruno, that isn’t nice! Mr. Leo isn’t an ogre.”

Bruno chuckled, saying, ”Ja, he is. He makes you work, which takes you away from me. In my book that makes him an ogre.”

“Whatever,” she laughingly said.

He moved up and gently pushed her onto her back before ravishing her with kisses on her chest, neck, and eventually her lips. This left them both breathless and turned on.

“I need you, baby,” he murmured as he nipped at her mark.

Veronica moaned at the feelings she felt when he did that. She’d had boyfriends and they had kissed her neck from time to time, but it had never felt like it did when Bruno did it. So, breathlessly, she begged, “Then make love to me.”

So, he did.

“I was thinking, maybe we could go see my parents today,” Bruno mumbled against her chest where his face was buried in her cleavage.

“Okay, I think I’d like that,” Veronica agreed as she looked down at him. “Maybe I could meet the rest of your family also.”

“Some, if not all, will be there hanging out since it’s Saturday.”

“Well then, get a move on lazy bones,” Veronica teased him as she giggled.

Bruno licked the inside of her breast, his eyes sparkling with humor as he gazed at her.

Leaning back, Bruno gave her a big grin. “What can I say, you taste good.”

Veronica rolled her eyes before standing up and practically running for the bathroom with him hot on her heels. Yep, today was going to be a good day because she felt so good, not tired at all.

Bruno woke up the next morning feeling strangely nervous. He frowned as he tried to puzzle out why he felt that way.

Veronica gave a sigh as she threw her leg over his waist.

That’s when it hit him like a lightning bolt, today is the day. Today was the day he was going to meet her parents for the first time. Why it made him so nervous, he didn’t know. Veronica had told him plenty about them and they seemed like they would be good people.

Bruno smirked to himself. Of course, they’re good people, they raised my sweet Veronica, didn’t they?

Bruno’s smirk dropped as he sighed heavily. After a bit of careful maneuvering, he managed to get out of bed without waking Veronica up, going to the kitchen to pour himself a glass of blood. He headed it up before walking into the living room to take a seat on the couch as he slowly sipped the blood.

I love her, oh, how I love her. I never knew how strong the bond would be, or how quickly I would come to depend on her and her love for me. I now know though and would be completely lost without her in my life.

Leaning back on the couch Bruno gazed out the window as he continued to drink. He soon became lost in thought, lost in the thoughts of how it would devastate him to lose her. Just the thought of loss took him back to a few days ago and how she had scared him. Even now, the fear that had gripped him was so real it had him breaking out in a cold sweat.

Bruno knew he never wanted to feel that kind of fear again as he tripped down memory lane.

His memory began with taking Veronica to work that day, as had become their habit. Then he had gone to work at the parts store, which was the Vogel’s newest venture.

No more than an hour later, he had received a call from Leo telling him he needed to get his butt over to Smythe Enterprises. When Bruno had arrived, he had found Leo pacing the office and Camilla sitting next to a pale Veronica on the couch.

Bruno closed his eyes as the conversation that had taken place began to move through his mind.

“What happened?” Bruno shouted as he ran to Veronica’s side.

Camilla had stood up, letting Bruno take her place next to Veronica. He had picked up her Veronica’s head, she seemed to be asleep, and placed it on his lap.

“She fainted, Bruno. You haven’t gotten her pregnant by chance, have you?” Camilla questioned him.

Bruno looked at Camilla, probably wild-eyed, as he shook his head no. He then looked back down at his Geliebte. With a shaky hand, he brushed her hair back before saying, ”Nein, I haven’t. We both decided we weren’t ready for that and have been incredibly careful. She even went on birth control.”

“You know those take three months to take effect, right?” Camilla asked him.

Bruno snorted. ”Ja, Camilla, I do. I may be a man, but I’m not stupid. Veronica told me about them when she went on them.”

“Okay. Well, since she’s been to the doctor for that, then she would have had a physical. So…?” Camilla left her sentence hanging as if she wanted him to fill in the blanks for her.

Puzzled, Bruno just looked at her and asked, “So…? What?”

Camilla sighed. “So, did the doctor find anything wrong with her during her physical?”

Bruno frowned as he tried to remember everything from that day. Then it was as if a light bulb had been switched on, and he groaned as he had begun muttering to himself in German. “I am such an idiot. How could I have been so stupid to forget?”

“Bruno, what have you done?” Leo spoke up to ask.

As the oldest, Leo had always taken it upon himself to keep the other Bruders in line. He acted as if it was his duty to scold them like small children at times.

Bruno remembered turning to hiss at Leo, annoyed with him. Ja, sometimes he did stupid things, but he wasn’t a child, and he didn’t like being treated like one.

“It was an accident, Leo. I didn’t mean to. I just… got sidetracked,” Bruno answered with a hiss.

“Again, I ask you, what did you do?” Leo hissed back, his fangs now showing.

Bruno sighed. “I took blood this morning, probably more than I should because I hadn’t had any yet.”

Leo nodded, looking calmer. “Taking blood is normal, Bruno. Our beast craves the blood of our Geliebte more than any other. That should not have been a problem because her body will learn to make extra at time goes by just as it would be for one who donates blood regularly.”

Bruno shook his head. “I know this Bruder, but I have to give Veronica blood after I take from her because she battles with anemia. This morning we were in a hurry, and I forgot,” he had whispered as he looked down at his Geliebte, who was so pale. “This is my fault.”

Bruno remembered how much it made him feel like crying that he had done that to her. He was supposed to take care of her, not make her unwell.

Finishing the blood in his glass, the thought back to the rest of it.

“Oh, Bruno, it was an honest mistake, and it’s fixable,” Camilla said gently. “Wake her up and give her some now. We’ll leave the two of you alone, and you need to take her home afterward.”

Bruno had nodded as he gently pulled Veronica up and placed her in his lap. Then he gave her a gentle kiss as he whispered, “Wake up, baby, please.”

Veronica’s eyes fluttered as he gave her another kiss, and he felt her kissing him back. He leaned back and watched her open her eyes to look at him.

“Hey,” he whispered, giving her a sad smile. “I’m sorry, Veronica.”

“For what?”

“For causing you to faint,” he told her. “If I had just given you blood this morning…”

“No, Bruno, it isn’t your fault, so don’t blame yourself. I should have filled my prescription for iron and started taking it as the doctor told me too, and…”

"Nein, it is my fault,” he argued. “I’m supposed to take care of you! That means I need to give you the blood you need to be well after I take from you! If I had done as a good husband should, then you wouldn’t have fainted. You wouldn’t be laying here all pale, and…” he had stopped when he couldn’t go on. Then, he had buried his face in her hair and silently cried. When he was slightly calmer, he continued by saying, “You are my Geliebte Veronica. It is my job, my need, my…my number one priority before anything else in this world to make sure you are happy and healthy.”

Veronica wrapped her arms around him, his face buried in her bosom, and gently soothed him by running her fingertips through his hair.

“I love you, Bruno, and you do make me happy. It was one slip up, and I’m fine now. So, please, please don’t be sad.”

He pulled away from her, lifting her up and onto his lap. He then unbuttoned his shirt as he kissed her. “It is a slip-up that won’t happen again, baby,” he murmured as he made a slash across his chest with a lengthened nail, drawing blood. He tugged at her head, encouraging her to take from him, needing her too.

With a sigh, Veronica had given in and done what he had silently asked of her.

Bruno was brought out of his musings by the sound of footsteps.
