Chapter Five

I stand in front of the full-length mirror in my bedroom, taking in my outfit. The person who came to do my hair and makeup did not disappoint. Other than my request for a nude look, I allowed her to do anything she wanted with my hair.

My hairstyle is a half-up hairstyle with lots of curls and volume with some strands falling down the side of my face. I found a pair of small simple silver hoops in my small jewelry box to wear.

I take in the dark color-changing fabric of my dress and smile at how I look. I feel and look amazing for once in a really long time. Maria was right when she helped me choose this dress, she said my face looked so much brighter in it than the others and it does.

There’s a knock on the door and the nerves fill me as I quickly walk over and open the door, my breath catching in my throat at the view in front of me.

Zander stands on the other side of the door, in a black custom-tailored suit. His brown hair is fixed and styled nicely and I am curious how long it will stay that way, he has a habit of running his fingers through his hair.

My eyes move up to his face to find him staring at my dress, he doesn’t say anything and the breath I am holding comes out quickly. He hates it, it looks horrible, this is a terrible idea.

“You look..” I watch as his eyes scan up my dress and to my face, “you look beautiful Freya.”

“Really?” I ask quietly as I look down at my dress, questioning everything.

“Yes, everyone will be envious.” I look up quickly at his words and my face heats up as my heart starts racing.

“Wanna know a secret?” I ask him, trying to shove down my feelings and calm my racing heart. Zander raises his eyebrows up at my question. I lean over carefully, “it has pockets.” I say with a smile on my face as I shove my hands in the pockets of the dress.

Zander laughs out loud at my words and I can’t help but laugh too. “Pockets huh?” He says as looks at my hidden hands. “They will definitely be jealous now.”

I grin and every second guess I have in my mind goes away.

“Are you ready to go?” Zander asks.

I nod then grab my phone, keys, and ID off the table by the door. After locking the door I turn around to see Zander’s arm bend, his elbow stretched out towards. I can’t stop the smile that falls on my face as I slip my arm through his.

As we walk outside there is a limo right in front, the driver stands to the side with the back door opened. I stop walking and Zander stops beside me looking at me.

This isn’t happening, I’m just his plus one but this is starting to feel like a little more than just a last-minute invite from my boss to a nonwork event. “I was going in a limo regardless of who my date was,” Zander says in my ear. He called it a date. “Come on.” He pulls me forward and I climb in carefully, making sure to watch my dress.

“So are we looking to go into business with anyone tonight?” I ask, trying to talk about work.

“No, tonight we are just two people, who enjoy each other’s company, at a charity gala.”

I want to argue with him, but I can’t, unsure of what I would even say to him.

The limo comes to a stop sometime later and my stomach flutters with nerves as I realize there are a lot of people here. I should have guessed a charity gala was going to get a lot of press, I just didn’t think it would this much.

“Just stay close to me okay?” Zander says. He must have noticed the uneasiness on my face.

I swallow the saliva in my mouth as I nod right before the door opens.

I carefully grab Zander’s hand as I step out of the backseat, Zander wraps his arm around my waist pulling me close against his side as we walk towards the entrance, warmth spreads through my body and my heart flutters in my chest. For the first time tonight, I am really smelling him and he smells amazing.
