Chapter 29

[Avery’s POV]

“What did you just say?” I asked, maybe I just wasn’t hearing things right. Maybe she said something else.

“You heard me,” she held her chin up high. “You’re not my child,”

“Who owns me, then?” I tried to hide the happiness that I’m feeling right now. I didn’t know what I was achieving in doing such thing, but who cares? Melanie wasn’t my mother. It was all that I needed to hear.

“She’s dead,” and that reversed the happiness in me.

“What?” I whispered. “You’ve got to be kidding me,”

“Believe what you want to believe, Avery,” she spat my name like it was venom in her mouth. The conversation was just between the two of us, none of the guys ever interrupted, which I preferred. “Leave me, I don’t care. Just make sure not come back,”

I grinned at her. “Like hell would I come back, Melanie,”

I walked out of the house with the twins following me. Before Colton could even slam the door shut, I heard Joe telling Melanie something. It went around the words, “We need to file a divorce,” and that made my grin wider.

Colton called a cab that would bring us back to the academy. I didn’t even bother going back to get some of clothes in Joe’s house. There were only a few of my clothes left there anyway.

The whole ride was filled with complete silence. Ace was sitting in the front seat whilst I’m sitting here at the back seat with Colton who was just staring straight ahead.

“Do you want to know more about your mother?” Ace asked me once the cab dropped us off in front of the academy.

I shook my head in response. “Finding her wouldn’t be able to bring her back to life, Ace. It’s too late now,”

“And the two of you need to talk right now,” Ace stated. He didn’t even let me answer because he just went inside the academy quickly.

“Look, Colto—“ I felt a pair of lips smashed on mine.

He pulled away almost immediately and stared deeply into my eyes. “You don’t have any idea of how long I wanted this to happen,”

“What are you talking about?” I played him. “What to happen?”

“Us?” he asked, confused.

“Who said that there’s gonna be an ‘us’?” I saw him frowning and I smiled at him. I pulled his collar and smashed his lips back to mine. “I’m just kidding, Colton,” he pecked me on the lips once again. “And just to break it to you, I lost the bet a long time ago too,”

“Avery!” somebody yelled and I turned my head to the side only to see Emma, Leon and Leo running towards Colton and I. I saw Ace running far behind them. Emma immediately tackled me into a hug. “I fucking miss you!”

“Same here!” I said as I hugged her back.

“Ehem,” Leo coughed. I looked at the other pair of twins and went to hug them. I hugged Leon first.

“Glad you’re back, Avery,” he said.

“Yeah,” I smiled at him then hugged Leo.

“Did you miss us?” Leo asked.

“Hell yeah!” I told him.

“Sorry to ruin your moment with my brother Avery,” Ace panted. “I told them to settle down, but obviously, they didn’t,”

“It’s okay, Ace,” I patted his back.

“So…you two?” Emma pointed at Colton and I. “An item now?”

“Do we really need to answer that?” Colton smirked at her as he grabbed my hand.

Emma then smirked back. “And I’ll take that as a yes,”

“What did I miss?” I asked Emma once I got back to our room. “Did anything happen to you whilst I’m gone? Anything interesting?”

“Something happened,” she sighed. “But it’s not interesting,”

“Well…” I eyed her whilst I took a seat beside her on her bed. “What is it, then?”

“I broke up with Mike,” she sighed once again. “I didn’t want to hurt him, but I did. He’s a really nice guy,”

“Why’d you let the good lad go?” I frowned. “You’re perfect for each other,”

“That’s what I thought too,” she looked at me. “But I never did feel anything for him,”

“What?!” I snapped. “Are you insane?! You never felt anything for him? At all?” she nodded back in response. What was happening to the world lately? I swore that they would live happily ever after someday. Was it all an act?

“I like somebody else, you know,”

“Who?”

“Leo,”

“What?!” I yelled. “That’s insane! Leo? Our friend?”

“No,” she said in a sarcastic tone. “I’m talking about Leonardo Di Carpio! Of course I’m talking about our Leo!”

“Since when?” I calmed down. Now that I’d given it a thought, they would look good together. I would be happy if I saw two of my bestfriends got together.

“Since I first laid my eyes on him,”

“That’s so cheesy,”

“I know,” she winked. “Should I tell him? They don’t know that I’ve broken up with Mike yet. It just happened this morning,”

“It’s your love story, Emma,” I smirked at her, remembering what she said to me back at the beach. “Every choice you make is a chapter,”

“You learned from the master, huh?”

“You got it,” I winked at her.

“Aren’t you suspended, Ms. Tanner?” the same teacher from before asked. It was the teacher who caught me fighting with Andrea. The teacher who never had any idea of what I was going through with that selfish woman who I used to call my mother.

“It’s fine, Mrs. Bart,” the headmaster said from behind me. “I heard about your situation, Ms. Tanner. You can go to your class now,”

“Thanks,” I smiled at him and continued to going to my first class with Emma who just remained quiet after that teacher, Mrs. Bart, confronted us. “Who told him?”

“I’m guessing it’s one of the twins,” Emma answered.

“Which pair?”

“I’m obviously talking about your boyfriend, Avery,” she rolled her eyes. We were nearing the gym. Physical Education was my first class after all.

“For your information, he still hasn’t asked me to be his girlfriend yet,” I explained. “We just kissed, that’s all! It’s nothing official,”

“You want something to be official?” she raised her eyebrow at me as we stood in the front door of the gym.

“Of course!” I exclaimed. “Who in the right state of mind wouldn’t?”

Emma then grinned at me. I was confused at her reaction at first, but when she opened the door of the gym. I knew what she was grinning about.

Inside the gym, were people lined up with letters on their shirts. They were guys from my gym class. I then made out the words that they were forming. Will you be my girlfriend?

I looked at the last person and saw that it was Colton himself who was smiling at me. And for all I knew, the answer was completely obvious.
