Chapter 23

Avery

Drew picked me up from the private entrance from the hospital. I quickly got in, praying no one saw me. I had too much going on to deal with the media right now. I didn't feel right about leaving Blaire again. She needed me, but I had to handle this situation before it got more out of hand. I knew the media and the public knew that three people were killed at my house and two were injured including my wife, but I never would have thought it could get this out of control.

When Kai called this morning, I was shocked and angry. There was a story out that Blaire is pregnant by Drake. There were pictures of him coming out of my house right before everything occurred. It was also stated that I went into a jealous rage and killed everyone in the house that was trying to protect Blaire. Kai tried her best to get the real story, a deadly home invasion, out front, but more people believed the fake story.

My phone was ringing and buzzing nonstop. It got so bad that I had to turn off all notifications and commenting. To make things worse, Anastasia had told a blog that we are having an affair and I was leaving my wife for her. I didn't think things would get any worse than this. Well, nothing was worse than losing two babies, but I didn't like how we were currently being painted by the media. I hated when damaging false stories were out about me or my family. Especially my wife when she's never done or said anything warranting her to be depicted as a villain.

I had to get all this straightened out. Blaire didn't need to know about any of this mess. She's already been through too much. So, Kai and my lawyers agreed to meet me at my office to get a handle on everything. The timing of that fake story and Anastasia doing an exclusive filled with lies confirmed that she was the one behind the text messages we have been receiving over the past month.

So, I called Alex, my IT guy, and told him to come to meet us at my office to deal with Anastasia. I still didn't know how she knew so much about Blaire's past. I had to find out and get some answers. I needed proof, so I can lock her crazy ass away. I was going to sue the hell out of everybody that was involved with these two false stories.

I was eager to get to my office to get this all taken care of so I could get back to my wife. I knew she was pissed at me when she called me by my stage name and I couldn't blame her. The way she looked when I told her I had to leave plagued my thoughts. She looked so hurt and angry. Lately, she's been on me about putting my career before us and I didn't feel like I was doing that. Music and the Label are my jobs and the way I provide for my family. She had to understand that.

"You good?" Drew asked, looking at the rearview mirror.

I almost forgot I was in the car and he was driving for a second. I probably looked crazy to him. I was kind of talking to myself out loud. I probably looked disheveled too since I was still in the sweats and a hoodie from last night. All I managed to do was brush my teeth and wipe my face this morning.

"Not at all," I replied honestly.

"I'm sorry, man. I should have stayed with her. I just had this feeling that something wasn't right. Bee and the baby are good, right?"

"No... We lost the baby," I said, looking down at my hands.

It hurt to say it. The guilt seemed to magnify with the thought that I left her when she needed me.

"Sh!t, man. I'm so sorry. I'll send Nick to look out for her while we're gone," he said.

"Thanks."

He made a call to Nick. Nick told Drew that he was already on his way. Not too long after that, we arrived at my office building. It was weird being back here. This was the place that my wife was raped. I didn't think I could stomach going near her office.

Grace, my office manager, saw me and gave me a shocked gaze. I knew it was unusual for my employees to see me like this. After looking me over, she pulled me into a hug. Grace has been with my company since its beginning. She worked with me in the L.A. office, New York office, and here in Atlanta. She wasn't that much older than me, but she had that cool auntie vibe. She's a good person and I always regarded her as family. She's the only reason why I let her annoying friend, Angela, work for me still. Angela has always given Blaire a hard time. Blaire never complained but Grace always got Angela back in line.

"You should be with Mrs. Rowland, not here. Is she alright?" Grace said with worry in her voice.

"She's doing... okay. I just have something to take care of really quick and I'll be back with her."

"I understand. I don't know where the media is getting these stories from. I wouldn't even address it if I was you." She frowned.

"It's bigger than that. No one can come for my wife!" I said harsher than I intended.

She shrunk back and I immediately gave her a warm smile to show her that I wasn't mad at her. Her body relaxed and she gave me a small smile.

"Okay. Well, good luck. I'm praying for you and Blaire," she said softly.

I thanked her as I walked past her to my office. When I opened the door, I noticed Kai on the phone going off on someone while my lawyers, Gisselle and Dante were engaged in a deep conversation. I sat at the conference table and all eyes were on me. Kai got off the phone and sat down across from me. Right as I was about to ask about their progress, my phone rang and buzzed in my pocket. I took it out of my pocket and saw it was Aubrey. I quickly excused myself to answer it.

"Man, are you okay? Blaire and the baby, are they okay?" he asked.

"She's alright," I said, not wanting to go into any details.

"Good. But what the hell is all of this?! I wake up to being the father of your wife's baby? And you went on a killing spree? You're having an affair with Anastasia? I know this sh!t ain't true well at least I know that I didn't get Blaire pregnant. What's going on man? Somebody out there really doesn't like you."

"It seems so. I'm sorry that you are getting dragged into this. My team will be in touch with your team. I got to go and handle this."

"Okay. You and the fam are in my prayers. If you need anything let me know. I'll release a statement right now if you need it."

"I'll let you know."

I ended the call and went back to the table. They told me about their plan. They sent out a cease and desist order for slander to all media outlets and blogs that were reporting the false story. Even the FBI has already got involved with the matter. The Anastasia problem was different though. She put that on her own social media account, but we still threatened her with a lawsuit and a gag order.

Soon after my Executive Assistant, Harlow, let Alex and his partner come in. Alex is seriously the best in the tech game. Even the government recruited him in his teen years because he's that good. He had two laptops and a bunch of cords. Alex briefly greeted everyone and sat by my desk. I walked over to him and gave him my phone.

"So, what's going on?" he asked.

"This crazy stalker is sending me messages. My issue is that she seems to know everything before it happens. I know who it is. I just need proof to take action," I said.

"I don't know. Unless she is threatening you, there's not much the authorities can do. I'll look into it though."

He quickly plugged in my phone to his laptop and was typing away. His partner whose name I forgot was busy on the other laptop.

"Man! She's better than I thought," he said.

"What does that mean?" I inquired.

"I can't even trace where the messages originated from. And did you know that you have spyware on this phone? Whoever this is can see and hear everything that you are doing. I'll take care of it though," he said never looking away from his screen.

"Damn," I said underneath my breath.

All of this was making me feel sick to my stomach. This was crazy. So Anastasia has been listening to me, seeing me, and looking through my phone for who knows how long. This b!tch was psycho. She didn't seem like she could do all of that. From talking to her the few times,
she didn't really have much to say or said anything worth listening to. She came off as dumb, but it all could have been an act. I still didn't understand her. She knew I didn't want her. So what was her end game? Did she want money or fame? At this point, I was willing to throw a bank at her if it meant that she would leave me the hell alone.

"She had physical access to your phone. When did you get this phone?" he asked.

I thought about it for a while. Then it all came back to me.

"My phone broke a few weeks ago. Actually, three days before my daughter was kidnapped. Harlow got me a new phone immediately that day," I said.

Alex looked at the door.

"Well, call her in," he said.

I went to the phone and paged for Harlow to come back into my office. A few moments later, she came in. She didn't seem as confident as she normally did. Her brown eyes seemed unfocused and nervous.

"Yes, Mr. Rowland?" she asked nervously.

"Do you remember when and where you got my new phone from?" I asked.

"The Apple Store at Lennox Square," she answered.

"Nothing strange happened?" I asked.

"No.... umm... is something wrong? Did I get a bad phone?" she asked nervously.

"Yes. Something is really wrong. Think, Ms. Gilmore. It's really important," Alex answered for me.

"Umm... well I did bump into this girl in the store. She helped me pick up my bags. I remember her because she was hitting on me and I told her I wasn't interested. She was nice and offered to carry my bags. I declined and told her I had to get back to work. I didn't think anything of that until now. Maybe we switched bags," she explained.

"That must be it. This person knows a lot about you. You have a real stalker on your hands. You have a case now. This is illegal. Don't worry, Avery. I got you. I just need a day maybe two," he said confidently.

"Do what you have to do. You are sure my phone is secure now?" I asked.

"Yes. She can still call or text you, but she can't spy on you anymore," he said.

He handed me my phone and I thanked him. He excused himself and he left with his business partner. Harlow still looked uncomfortable and anxious. I ensured her that she didn't do anything wrong and told her to take a break. She seemed relieved as she left.

I went back to the table almost forgetting that Kai, Dante, and Giselle were still in my office. They were busily on the phone or their laptops. I cleared my throat loudly to get their attention. They stopped what they were doing to focus on me. After giving me a final report, my lawyers left and went to handle their business.

Kai expressed releasing a statement to clear this up. She wanted me to do a video to tell my fans and the public that those stories are false and to respect our privacy as we deal with this tragedy. I decided to do it. I really didn't have anything to lose. She found a neutral background in my office for me to record. As soon as she signaled for me to start I took a deep breath and went for it.

"Hey, it's Profit. I know I look a mess right now. Obviously, I'm not in jail because I haven't done anything wrong. Those stories out are not true at all. I didn't hurt or kill anyone and I'm not having an affair. I love my wife. She is everything to me. She is not having an affair with my friend. Aubrey is like a brother to us. The only true thing is that my family and I have been through hell. Like literal hell. My daughter was kidnapped. My wife was a victim of a home invasion robbery; where unfortunately two members of my security were killed. And one was severely injured trying to protect my wife. I'm so sorry that it happened. I'm forever thankful to them and I give my condolences to their loved ones. My wife is currently healing from her injuries. I wish that everyone would please give us complete privacy... I don't know how much more we can take... Please give keep us in your prayers. Thank you for all your support," I said on the brink of tears.

I stood up immediately and walked away from the camera. I didn't want everyone to see me break down like this. I refused to let the world have any more of me. They had enough! I had enough! I never felt so out of control in my life. Nothing was going right. I felt light-headed and overwhelmed. I sat down on the couch and placed my head in my hands and cried. I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up to a crying Kai.

"It's going to be okay," she sniffled.

I wiped my face with the back of my hand. I stood up ready to leave.

"You got what you needed?" I asked.

"Yes. You should go get some rest. I'll deal with everything. Please give Blaire a big hug for me," she said.

I told her I would as she hugged me. Then I grabbed my phone and headed toward the elevators. Drew was waiting in the lounge area. I gave him a nod to let him know that I was ready. He got up and pushed the button for the elevator. When it opened, Angela was in there. I really wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone and definitely not her. If you got a problem with my wife you got a problem with me.

"Oh, Avery. I'm so sorry." Angela said, trying to hug me.

I pushed her off of me. I was pissed that she thought it was okay to call me by my first name when we didn't have a relationship like that.

"It's Mr. Rowland and don't forget it!" I spat.

She stepped back and lowered her head. She looked like she was about to cry. I felt bad. I shouldn't be taking my frustrations out on her or anyone else.

"I'm sorry. Obviously, I'm not having a good month," I said with a small grin.

She relaxed and smiled and looked me up and down with what seemed to be lust. I guess she still had a crush on me. I didn't care. She's one of the many thousands of women that did too.

"It's okay. I was just worried about you. You know you mean so much to me-I mean us," she said nervously.

"Yeah. Thanks. Have a good day," I said as I walked out of the elevator.

Drew and I walked to his SUV. I was constantly looking over my shoulder. I didn't want to deal with the paparazzi, fans, or anyone period. A flood of relief overcame me when I made it to the truck unnoticed. I couldn't wait to get back to the hospital. I was eager to get back to my love. I wasn't going to leave her ever again. From this point on, I'm always going to be there for her.
