Jenn

Hearing her cry over the phone got me worried. “Jenn? What’s wrong?”

I got up from Liam’s bed alarmed when I heard her sobs. “Why are you crying? What happened?” My heartbeat accelerated.

“My mom... She... ” She said between sobs but I couldn’t make sense.

“Did anything happen to your mom? Talk to me Jenn... You are scaring me!”

Finally, she stopped a bit to tell me. “No. She’s okay. The firm she is working at made her partner and she’s going to be in charge at the new office in Seattle. We are moving to Seattle...” She continued sobbing again.

“Noooo...” I said in a trembling voice. That’s not happening... No! Seattle is too far...

“When are you moving?” I asked as calmly as I could master for the sake of my best friend.

“In three days.” She said sniffling.

“Tomorrow morning I’ll be there. Please, stop crying.” I felt my heart bleeding.

“Okay. Se you tomorrow morning!”

When the call ended it was my turn to lose it! Liam saw me burst into tears. I was sobbing when he pulled me into a hug and tried to comfort me. His voice was soothing and I felt strangely calm in his arms. when the sobs stopped and I calmed down a bit, he pulled back and looked at me worried. “Want to talk about it?”

I just nodded because my throat felt dry and I was drained from all the crying. With the lightest touch he wiped the remaining tears from my face and gave me a glass of water that was on his nightstand god knows how long but I gladly took it and the water helped me calm down more. I gave him back the glass of water after drinking half of it and took a big breath before I tell him.

“Jenn’s mother got a promotion and they’re moving to Seattle.”

“When?”

“In three days...” I said in a trembling voice. I continued “This sucks! What am I going to do? Jenn is my best friend... my only friend to be honest...” I was devastated.

“If there is anything I can do...” Liam said sounding unsure of what else to say to comfort me.

“You can’t but thanks for listening! I’m tired. Going to bed.” I told him sounding defeated.

“Okay.”

I went to my room and plopped on my bed with my face down to my pillow. I wanted to scream and cry my heart out. My head was a mess. How am I supposed to live without Jenn and survive my last year of high school?

First with the move and not having her close, going to different schools and now with Seattle? Seattle was too far away... And Liam... What to think of him? Every day that passes he is confusing more and more. Although I have to admit that he’s been friendlier the last few days and I can’t forget how thoughtful his gift was for my birthday. Tonight he was gentle and sweet when he tried to comfort me. I don’t know what time it was but somehow I managed to fall asleep.

The first thing I did when I opened my eyes was to check the time. It was 7:38am. I got up and went to the bathroom. I took a quick shower, brushed my teeth and towel dried my hair and caught them in a loose bun. I went back to my room, got dressed and then made my way down to the kitchen.

As I approached I was greeted with the smell of freshly brewed coffee and soon enough I saw my mom sitting by the kitchen island having her morning coffee. She looked up from the newspaper she was reading when she heard my footsteps.

“Morning honey!” she said smiling.

“Morning mom!” I said grumpily.

“What do you want for breakfast?”

“Nothing! I’m going to see Jenn.”

“Don’t leave with an empty stomach... at least eat some cereal with milk.”

“I’m in a hurry!” I took a banana from the fruit basket and left. A twenty minute drive later, I was outside Jenn’s house. I took the pastries box from the passenger’s seat that bought on my way to Jenn’s house and opened the front door. There were boxes around the hall and the kitchen. I greeted Jenn’s mom and went up to her room. When I opened her door she was still in bed.

“Hey!” I said in a soft voice.

When she heard me she got up from bed and hugged me. “Thanks for coming.” She looked sad.

“Don’t thank me yet! I brought your favorite...” I told her trying to cheer her up.

She looked at the box and then at me. She had dark circles under he eyes indicating how little she had slept. She gave me a smile that didn’t even touch her eyes, opened the box and sniffed the freshly baked pastries.

She left a sigh “You know me so well. Thank you Hannah!”

We talked a bit and then I helped her with packing. She brought some boxes in her room and began to empty the selves of her bookcase first. She boxed books and some of her favorite Knicks and Knacks. Some of those were my birthday gifts to her from previous years.

Next in line were the photographs she had on her wall above her desk. For every photo that went inside the box there was a good memory behind it for us to reminisce. Hours passed and we’ve made progress with the packing. I was sad but I tried to have a poker face on for her sake.

At some point her mom came upstairs with a box of pizza in her hand that we gladly took and devoured in no time. We hadn’t even realize how much hungry we were until she brought the pizza to be honest. It was getting late and I had to go but I promised to return the next day.

True to my promise, next morning as soon as I opened my eyes I got ready and run downstairs. Mom was already with Peter in the kitchen having their morning coffee.

“Morning sweetheart!” She said chirpily.

“Morning!”

I opened the fridge poured a glass of orange juice and took a muffin to go.

“Where are you going again this morning in such a hurry?” Mom asked.

“To Jenn.” I said hastily

“Again?”

“Yeah...” I said in a cracked voice.

“Honey what’s wrong?” My mom asked me worriedly.

I told her about Jenn moving away to Seattle. She looked at me sadly and she pulled me into a hug. “I’m so sorry to hear that honey. I can only imagine how this feels.”

I stayed in my mom’s embrace trying to get a grip of my feelings. I felt my eyes moisten. I cleared my throat and took a step back. “I have to run.” I said and left hurriedly.

I was at Jenn’s in less than 20 minutes cause there was no traffic this early. I went inside and followed the loud voices that were coming from the kitchen. Jenn was in a bit of an argument with her mom. I cleared my throat to make my presence known.

They both stopped and Jenn’s mom greeted me. ” Morning Hannah!”

“Good morning! Is it a bad timing? I can go...”

“No!” Jenn interrupted me “We’re finished here...”

I looked at Jenn’s mom a bit troubled but she nodded that it was okay. I turned to Jenn. “You need to change!”

She looked at me puzzled. “Erm… Why?”

I took her by her arm and motioned her to follow me. “You and me are going out for breakfast.”

She gave me a half smile. “I have still many things to do.”

“Don’t worry I’ll help you out when we come back. Now move your cute little butt and change.”

That graced me with a wide grin. In less than 10 minutes I was driving us away. I saw here sitting at the passenger’s seat looking outside her window. I could see her battling with herself trying to decide to ask or not where were heading to. At some point I think she understood when we were getting close cause she turned to me. “Are we going to Jerry’s”

I smiled at her. “Yes!” I saw her face light up like a Christmas tree.

When we walked in Jerry’s and met him by the bar, we gave him our order and went to sit at our usual booth. I think that was the best way to say goodbye to my childhood friend, my only best friend. Growing up together she was like a second sister to me and I am going to miss her so much. This last year in high school is going to be hard for both of us. For Jenn a lot more as she is moving so far away and with no friends or family close.

So many memories... This day is bittersweet but at least we went to one of our favorite places to have Jerry’s legendary pancakes we love so much.

I’ve spent as much time as possible with Jenn the last few days until the day she left. We promised each other to skype and text every day. My last year in high school starts tomorrow and even though I am going to the same school as Liam, I’m not excited one bit. To be truthful, I hate it! I hate the fact that I won’t have Jenn with me.

(A/N: I know it’s a bit short. How do you think things are going to get for Hannah without Jenn by her side? Will Liam be there for her? Let me know what you think is going to happen. Don’t forget to comment, vote and follow. Stay tuned for the next chapter.)
