Chapter Twenty-Three| Eden

"Are you sure you want to go back home?" Lia frowns as I pack my stuff up.

"Yeah, I just need to be alone for a while." I give her a small smile and watch her give me a sympathetic look.

"I don't want you to be by yourself, you're going to overthink." Lia sighs.

"Lia." I breathe out, "Theo's dead. It's been two weeks since that fire and there's been no sign of him. I'll overthink anywhere."

"You don't know that, there was no body." Lia tries to reason.

"Then where is he?!" I can't help but shout and I feel myself starting to get overwhelmed. "Where is he?!" I cry.

Lia pulls me into a tight hug.

"I love you, Eden." She whispers and I only cry harder. "I'm going to come and check on you everyday."

"I love you, too."

I make it home just before the sun sets. My door is now fixed thanks to Zack. I slowly close the door behind me and sigh when the eerie silence welcomes me.

I look around and play with the necklace that Theo gave me before he was taken. I lazily throw my bag on the floor and make my way to the kitchen to make myself a cup of tea.

I quietly cry as I rest my hand on my small baby bump.

Once I've made my tea, I move to the living room and freeze when I spot one of Theo's hoodies on the sofa. I place my cup down on the coffee table and put it on, embracing the faint scent of his aftershave.

For the next hour I stare blankly at the television. My phone begins to ring, Oliver's name popping up. I answer straight away.

"Eden, Professor Richards is alive, he's in a coma though. My team have managed to recover the cctv footage and I can confirm that Theodore is more than alive." I let out a cry of relief at his last words.

"He's okay." I whimper.

"Although I don't know for how long though, he made it out of the burning building but he looked quite injured." I slowly closes my eyes. "And once Professor Richards wakes up from his coma, God knows what he will do to him."

"Someone needs to stop that man, Oliver. What he's doing is illegal!" I protest and I hear him sigh. "If I have to do it myself I will beca-" I freeze when I hear a massive thud against my front door. "I'm going to have to call you back." I quickly say before hanging up the phone.

I get up and turn the television and light off, so I can look out the window and when I do my heart stops and I rush over to the door.

"Theo!" He's slumped on my doorstep, clutching the side of his stomach. He looks up at me with watery eyes, a large bruise is visible on his cheek and his hair sticks to his forehead. "Baby?" I crouch down in front of him and cradle his face in my hands.

He looks at me in confusion and then looks around him. "I-I'm s-sorry." He whimpers and throws his arms around me. "I'm sorry, small." He cries and I cry with him.

"It's okay, you're here now, it's okay. Everything is going to be fine." I rub his back as he sobs. "Let's get you inside, clean your wounds and I'll run you a bath." I help him stand up.

He leans most of his weight on me and I struggle a little to keep him up. "S-Sorry." He mutters and takes some of his weight off of me.

"Can you walk up the stairs?" I question him and he nods.

It takes us a while to get to the bathroom but once we make it, I sit him down on the toilet seat and search for the first aid kid.

We look at each other and my lips start to tremble but I try not to cry. I clean the wounds on his face as he looks up at me with wide eyes.

"Your stomach?" I whisper and gently lift up his t-shirt. I gasp when I spot the dark bruises that contrast against his pale skin. "Theo." I look back up and his eyes looks so empty.

"Sorry." He looks away from me and gently pushes my hand away, so his t-shirt can fall back down.

"I-I'll run your bath." I stutter, feeling an unwelcoming feeling in the atmosphere. As the bath starts to fill with water, I go and get him some comfortable clothes.

When I come back into the bathroom, Theo is in the exact position I left him. His eyes looking at the black and grey tiles.

"Do you need some help getting in?" He slowly shakes his head and undresses himself. I watch him with watery eyes as he winces when he sinks into the water.

I decide to take his hoodie off and leave it with the pile of fresh clothing.

I turn back around and Theo's eyes fall to my stomach. He furrows his eyebrows and tilts his head.

Then he looks at me with glossy eyes. He keeps alternating between my eyes and then my stomach.

I raise a shaky hand to my stomach.

"A baby?" He whispers.

"Our baby." I smile sadly and he clenches his eyes shut.

"B-But I'm sterile."

"Professor Richards lied to you." I walk over to him and go to stroke his hair but he flinches and moves away.

"Theo, it's me." I say, my voice filled with hurt.

"I'd like to be alone." He mumbles and I stumble back a little.

"Theo, please."

"I said I'd like to be alone!" He says slightly louder, avoiding eye contact and I gulp.

"I just thought....."

"Leave me alone!"

"Okay." I whisper and walk out of the bathroom, closing the door gently behind me.

I rest my head against it and listen to him cry. I bite my lip and go downstairs, ready to call Oliver.

He answers the phone straight away.

"He's home." I can just about whisper. "B-But he's pushing me away, I told him about our baby and he told me to leave him alone."

"Eden, try not to stress. I will be around first thing in the morning, for now just keep your distance from Theo. Let him initiate the conversations." Oliver informs me.

"Okay, bye."

I hang up and decide to cook Theo something to eat.

He comes down the stairs half an hour later and sits himself at the kitchen island. "I made you some food." I place the bowl of pasta in front of him and then get ready to make my way out of the kitchen but he stops me by grabbing hold of my hand, gently.

"Have you eaten?"

I shake my head. "I'm not hungry." He frowns and gets up to get another fork.

"Please sit down." He helps me onto the chair next to him. "Are you okay? Is our baby okay?" I stare at him with wide eyes and slowly nod my head.

I take a few bites and he watches me intensely. Then his eyes fall to my stomach, I watch him slowly raise his hand and he places it on my protruding belly.

He smiles and then his lips tremble.

I choose to stay silent, going by what Oliver told me.

"I think I'm going to go to bed." I watch his face drop.

"You don't want to talk?" He whispers.

"I didn't think you wanted to speak to me." I bite my lip and look away.

"I'm sorry, small." He reaches up to turn my head to face him.

"I-I thought you was dead!" I break down and push his hand away. "You put yourself in unnecessary danger! You were gone for over two months, Theo!" I take a deep breath. "Then you come back and push me away!" I stand up, moving away from him.

"I love you." He stands up. "I. Love. You." He steps forward with each word until he is right in front of me.

I look up at him and then jump when I feel his hands gently touching my bump.

"What happened to you? What did you do?" He shakes his head.

"I don't want to talk about it." He says.

I step away.

"Then I don't want to talk to you."

"Small." He shakes his head and stops me from exiting the kitchen. "No, don't leave me." He pleads.

"Then tell me!" I shout and then I feel my ears begin to ring, as I start to feel fatigue.

Theo picks me up and takes us into the living room, he sits down with me on his lap. I bury my face into the crook of his neck. "Please, Theo."

He strokes my back. "Okay."
