Way to go me.

went the sound of school bell signaling the end of the day.
The sun had set to the West with orange and black clouds.

I was late for dinner and the late afternoon classes I had was the reason for my delay.

I quickly packed my stuff, and dashed out of my class. I tried to head home as soon as possible until I'm called by a classmate who does not realize I'm in a hurry.

"HEY VALERIE!! YOU FORGOT YOUR BOOKS!" Julia holds onto her knees panting, trying to catch her breath from all the running she had to do.

I snatched the books from her and hurriedly placed them into my bag. "At least a thank you would have been nice." Julia murmurs.

"Yeah thank you whatever." I thanked her. I quickly boarded a Taxi and went home.

When I got home, I could see the lights blinking from a distance.

"Well that's odd. I was sure sure the lights were in perfect condition before I left." I wondered.

"Hello?" I called out, but there was no response.

Normally my mother would have just yelled here location. But this time, I got no response.

I assumed she was asleep so I just went to the kitchen.I got into the pitch blacked kitchen and there I saw something.

What did I see?

I saw blood.

There was blood in the sink and that was when I realized something was wrong. I went up stairs to my mom's bedroom and unfortunately there was no sign of her.

I checked the other rooms and called her name but still, no sign of her. I quickly go down stairs to the backyard and right there, I saw something that would haunt me for the rest of my life....

There my mother was, lifeless in the swimming pool. I stood there in shock. I was unable to move. My eyes began to water. I couldn't help but fall on my knees and cry my heart out

I tried to pick up the phone in my pocket but my hands were too shaky.

Eventually, I was able to call 911 and the officers came as soon they could.

It took a while before they here, but as soon they did, Rosalinda, my mother's closest friend was here hugging me tightly and uncontrollably sobbing like there was no tomorrow.

An officer with blonde hair tied in a bun with blue eyes came close to me and knelt before me .

"Hi Valerie, I'm officer Abigail. Can you tell us what you saw?" She asked readying her pen to write what ever I had to say.

After explaining what happened in between sobs, she slowly leaned in and hugged me. I guess she was trying to console me.

Many hours later, some officers told me my mother had committed suicide. Some people cleaned up the mess and took my mother's deceased body away.

Rosalinda offered to take care of me but refused her offer."If there's anything you need please tell me." Rosa said softly.

"Okay aunty." I said and got into my room.

I had not eaten, nor drank water. My hair was an utter mess, my knees were a little scrapped, my eyes were all red and puffy.

Despite all that, I saw a blue envelope sitting on my bed. I went closer and I sat beside it and slowly picked it up and opened it.

Inside the envelope was a paper. I slowly unfolded the paper and read what was written.

Dear Val,
My precious baby Val. What I'm going to tell you is going to make you hate me but I don't mind. It is best if you knew the truth.
So here's the thing... I've had cancer way before you were born. The doctors told me
no matter what I do, I could not be fixed.
I knew it would result in my death so I just thought I'd end my life as soon as possible.
I know you are upset because of me leaving you and you have every right to be upset.

I'm so sorry baby, I had no intention to die a shameful death but I had no other choice.

I turned the back of the paper and saw another note:

I've hidden lots of money in my closet, use the money wisely. Please take good care of yourself. Study a lot, but not to the point where your head hurts. Sleep well and eat your vegetables. No 'smutting' until you are of age and don't forget mommy lovels you with all her heart.

With love,

With that, i couldn't help but drown myself in my tears till I slept.

jamie walker: As usual you hooked me right away. I am never disappointed in your work and you continue to get better. I wonder do you ever look back at your earlier work and have a different perspective.

Sushi3809: I would say, it is splendid to see a writer who knows their way around language. I do think, however, that maybe it was a slightly hurried plot line. especially the slightly abrupt relationship between Jessie and Jason. It was an enemies to lovers trope and I just wish you would have let it burn ...
