My best friend is my mate

We stayed like this for a few minutes. Entangled in each other's warmth. It helped us heal from the sadness.

"Maximus..." Helena whispered. "I know that it's probably not a good time to talk about it but... I want to find the hunters."

I tensed in her arms. Did she just say that she wanted to find the hunters? Surely I was mistaken. I certainly did not want to think about them anymore. I wanted them to forget about us and leave us be.

"What did you say?" I asked scared of the answer.

"I think... We need to go back there and kill them." She said. "I want the pack safe and I don't want what happened to you to ever happen again. They need to be stopped."

She was right. We needed to protect our pack but she did not understand what they were and how powerful they were. I did not want her anywhere near those men.

"I agree that they need to be stopped but... You don't understand." I said. "Their base is very well protected and I wasn't the only beast they had on a leash. They're very powerful. We won't be able to defeat them alone. They have an army."

"Can you give me all the details on their base? Maybe I could assess the situation better if you could tell me about it."

I was scared to talk about that place. They held me there for ten years. I was sure that letting her take the fight to them was not a good idea.

But I could see the determination in her eyes. I knew that she would not back down from this. She never did once she set her mind to something. She wanted to make the hunters pay and she would not rest until she did.

"Helena." I said determined. "It won't be easy and I'm not sure we can do it but... I will tell you all I know."

She smiled at me and kissed me softly, just a peck on the lips but I could feel the happiness through our bond. I was glad that she was optimistic but I was not sure that it would be enough in this situation.

"Thank you sweetheart. I know it's not gonna be easy for you." She smiled at me. "You can stop anytime you want. I don't want to make you uncomfortable."

I nodded. Yeah that would not be an easy talk that was for sure. I did not even know where to start.

"Their base is located deep in a forest. I don't know the exact location because I was drugged the first time and the other times... I was out of it. Deep in the bloodlust. But I could recognise the town near the forest if I saw it. I could track it because I know the smell of it." I explained. "They have six hundred men on site and about fourty lycanthropes. The most dangerous ones are the werebears, the werelions and the werehyenas. But it's not all. They also have twenty Hellhounds. They used to set them on those who tried to escape. They're very nasty and they listen well to orders. They took them from the Wild Hunt so they know how to follow orders."

I could not even recognise my voice anymore as I remembered how the fangs of the Hellhounds felt in my flesh. It was like the bite of death. Their bite was cold and it chilled you to the bones if they did not tear your flesh away. I was lucky to be a werewolf and heal quickly or I would have not survived it.

"They... Used the Hellhounds on you?" She asked softly.

"Yes. The first months I was there. I tried to escape. I almost succeeded once but the Hellhounds were there. It hurt more than silver or fire. Their bite is... Powerful." I said my voice distant as if I was back there in those woods where the Hounds caught me.

She held me tight and kissed my forehead to comfort me. I could feel her try to soothe me through our bond. I had to shut it down a bit because I did not want her to catch on on my memories of the Hellhounds. Sometimes, the bond could allow us to see some images of what we were thinking about. That was too painful to share with her and I did not want for her to catch on my mood of that time either... I was so scared but also I already craved the blood of my kind. I never wanted her to catch on on that.

"It's over sweetheart." She whispered soothingly. "They will never lay a finger on you again. I promise. I will kill them even if it takes me years to do so."

"I believe you." I said stroking her magnificent ashen blond hair. "I just... Don't like the idea of you getting yourself in danger like that."

"I won't be alone." She said. "I'm not stupid. They are trained to kill us and they know how. Plus, they have the other lycanthropes and the Hellhounds. It would be suicide to just put the pack onto them. I will probably ask the Council for reinforcements and ask our allies to help. This is a general problem anyway. I'm sure that the other lycanthrope's leaders would also love to get their hands on them."

"I suppose they would. They were a lot of us from different groups. All abducted to be their little pets. I'm sure the others would love to get back at them too. I'm not sure the Council will approve though. They are humans after all and we don't kill humans. It's too messy to cover their murders."

"We'll see what they say but I won't do anything without talking to them first. They have to know what's going on and it seems that you're the first to ever come back from this place alive." She said and I felt the anger pour into our bond.

I could understand why she would feel that way. If it had been the other way around, I would want to kill them all too. But then, I would never have survived her loss. I was not as strong as her. She would have found a wreck because that was what I was already.

I feel that I could help her with this project though. Only me. I could give them back what they did to me and I could protect my mate. That would be my new purpose. I would help her even if it was the last thing I did.

"I'll help as much as I can." I said determined. "I'll even go back there if I have to."

"Are you sure?" She asked shocked.

"I know the place like the back of my hand. I can certainly help you all get in. First, I can help convince the Council."

"That would be great. If you feel like you can testify in front of them about everything that happened, that would help a lot. " She said smiling at me.

"I don't like talking about it but... If it can help our cause, then I will."

"Thank you sweetheart." She said her voice breathy.

I held her tight to me and just felt better with her in my arms, naked against me. I would protect her with everything I had because I belonged to her and she belonged to me. I would never let anyone or anything take that away from me. For the first time in ten years, my wolf agreed.
