My best friend is my mate

Helena's POV

I knew that it would be hard on him but he was making so much progress since we mated. I truly believed that it helped him with his wolf. Shifting seemed to be an issue to him but he just let go in front of me. I was really happy to see that he trusted me with his wolf. More importantly, he trusted his wolf with me. That was a big step for him. I hoped that it would be all right to talk to the council.

Helena. My father called through the mind-link. Is everything all right?

Yes. I said reassuringly. He's fine. He's even ready to talk to the Council about what happened to him.

That's great news. Maybe we will be able to put an end to them if your mate helps us.

I cut the link with my father to focus back on Maximus. I knew that we could win if he helped. I just needed to give him some time to be able to talk about this to someone else than me. He was doing so great that I forgot sometimes that it was still painful.

"Why don't we go for a run tonight?" I asked him softly. "That might help to let go? Just the two of us."

"Are you sure?" He asked tensing a bit.

"I'm not scared of your wolf Maximus. I know that you would never hurt me."

"No one else must be there." He said anxious.

"Of course. I'll make sure that we're alone." I said stroking his hair.

He nodded in my arms and we stood up so he could go fetch some new clothes. I had everything he would need inside the house because I always planned on having my mate move in with me. Of course, I never planned on the fact that he would be so big but I had no trouble finding the right size. We would buy some things online since we never mixed with the humans.

I truly blessed the internet for that. I had to deal with the humans sometimes because of the companies we owned but I tried to make it quick. It was hard to behave normally in front of them especially with Maximus' disappearance. Maybe it would be easier now. I could only hope.

He came back downstairs dressed with a shirt and jeans. He looked really fine because the shirt was molding his muscles. Damn I could go at it again. I never felt like that before. He offered me a small smile as he visibly was puzzled as to why I was devouring him with my eyes.

"What is it?" He asked amused.

"You're so beautiful." I said with a smile.

He smiled back at me and embraced me tight. I took advantage of this situation to put my nose on his neck and breath in his scent deeply. I would never get tired of this.

"I should be saying that." He said laying his head on mine. "Isaac was not the only one would have wanted to be your mate."

"Really?" I chuckled. "Well, I wasn't the only one who wanted you either."

"They would not want me anymore. Only you because you're stubborn." He teased.

"It doesn't matter. You're mine and I'm not going to give you up." I said.

"I like the sound of that." He chuckled.

So did I. He was the only one for me and I did not care about what happened before. He was perfect to me.

I went back to work at the pack house leaving Maximus home alone once I was sure that he was going to be all right. I knew that I could not prevent him from getting hurt again but I wanted to preserve him as much as I could. He went through so much already to last him a lifetime.

I worked all day with my parents and I knew that it was time to go home. I was happy even if a bit tired. I made sure to tell the whole pack not to go out in the woods at night, except for patrol. I would take Maximus into a part of the woods that was close to my house so I knew that the rest of the pack would not go there.

"Maximus?" I called as I entered our house.

"In here." He said from the office.

What was he doing there? I walked in his direction and I saw that he was behind the computer. He was looking at our reports. Heh. Once a Beta, always a Beta. He wanted to know what was going on in the pack lately. That brought a smile to my face. I knew that he was the perfect mate for me.

"Found anything amiss mate?" I asked amused.

"You've been doing well while I was... Absent." He said. "I see that you never took a Beta to replace me."

"No but I would need to now." I sighed thinking about hearing the wolves who would want to be Beta. Maximus had no relatives anymore so I would need to find a Beta among the other dominant wolves of my pack.

"We could... Do it together." He said uneasy.

"If you feel up to it, I would love to look for a new Beta with you." I said softly before kissing his head. "I had help you know to lead the pack. My parents did not stop helping me and they're still doing it today."

"I'll help you now." He said looking at me. "That's my role as your mate."

"There's no pressure sweetheart." I said. "When you're ready, I'll be happy to share the work with you."

"Let's try tomorrow." He said determined.

"All right. But first, let's go for our run." I said with a smile.

It was important for mated wolves to run together. It allowed us to bond more and to ease all the tensions of the day. We did not do this since he was abducted but I was ready to break that circle. I wanted to see if we could get past this. That would be a big step in the right direction.

We took off our clothes and went at the back of the house. I had made a door there so I could exit the house quickly. We shifted and I felt better on all four. It had been stressing days for me as well and being able to run would help a lot.

I turned to look at Maximus and he was gazing at me out of his golden eyes. I strolled slowly to him so he would not get scared but he was waiting for me to move closer. I rubbed my head on his once I was close enough and I felt him lean into my touch. That was good. I knew that he would trust me near him.

Everything all right sweetheart? I asked.

Yes. I'm good with you my love.

Good. Let's go.

I darted towards the woods and he followed me. I could feel that he wanted to play as much as I did and that warmed my heart. We would get through this and heal our wounds as long as we had each other.
