My best friend is my mate

Maximus' POV

I knew that she had the right to know everything but I was worried about how she would react upon learning what I did with the Shaman. After what just happened and my chatty wolf, I had no choice. I had to tell her everything.

Just thinking about it brought me back to this morning. I entered the Shaman's house and she was expecting me. She could feel that I was struggling with my wolf and knew exactly how to help.

She made me lie down on the carpet, in front of the fireplace. She threw some herbs in the fire that made my eyes tear up and my throat tighten. She started humming to herself and for an old lady, she still had no trouble to move her body.

I closed my eyes and was face to face with my wolf. He did not seem hostile but for the first time, I felt small in comparison. I knew that I would not be able to submit him or that he would agree on everything. He seemed as determined as I was.

"The Shaman said that we were now two entities sharing a body. It's usually the case with us werewolves but we join as one. The hunters broke that link between me and my wolf and I aggravated it by letting him in charge so long. We're now two distinct beings. The only way to bring us closer was to make a deal. I would be in charge most of the time, until we need to fight. He thinks I'm too weak and I'm fine with that." I explained.

Helena was looking at me intensely, trying to figure out what I was saying. I understood that it was no easy thing. She was used to work as one with her wolf but I could never do that anymore. I had to bargain. My wolf agreed with me on only one thing and that was our mate. We had to protect her no matter what. He did not trust the pack with her safety but he was ready to let me try because safety was in number, that was deeply engraved in his DNA after all.

"As for Isaac..." I continued. "My wolf told me that he had the same smell as the hunters. He noticed it the other night when we attacked him. It shocked him enough for me to be able to regain control and not kill him. I wasn't sure but now I have to agree. He at least, saw one of the hunters behind your back. I don't know who or why but it's undeniable."

She seemed to think about my words carefully. I could not explain much more to her since all I had was a scent. For wolves, scents were important and we tended to rely more on our noses than on anything else. That was undeniable proof to her as it was to me.

"I'm sure that he would never admit it." She said finally. "I need to know since when he's working with them, why and to what end."

"I agree." I nodded. "It won't be easy but there's nothing he would refuse if it comes from you."

She seemed surprised by my words. She knew now that Isaac had a thing for her. Was using that too nasty for her? She was a gentler soul than her father so it would not surprise me.

"I don't if I'll be able to..." She frowned. "I don't want to hear anything that might make Isaac responsible for what happened to you."

That surprised me because I did not even think about that. Isaac is our age so that would be really twisted if he planned this with the hunter and I was not sure that he would have made Helena a target. He loved her too much back then already.

"Anyway." She continued. "If I understand correctly, your wolf and you are two different person now?"

"Yes." I nodded. "We are trying to work together so we won't get in each other's ways but we won't be able to be one."

"I see... It seems that you're better that way, more peaceful but I understand now why we both reacted so strongly." She said.

"What do you mean?" I asked confused.

"You're more..." She seemed to be looking for the right word. "Eager for a lack of a better word. You didn't hesitate and you lost control with me."

Oh. I had to laugh. That was not because of my wolf for sure.

"That wasn't me babe." I said amused. "It was all us. Maybe it did help that my wolf is calm but... The full moon is approaching and we both know what that means."

She gasped at the meaning of my words. The full moon was an important part of our lives. Mated females tended to be more fertile during the full moon and it was probable that she would enter heat on the full moon. We would have to be extra careful if we did not want to become parents so soon. I was not ready yet, that was for sure.

"I didn't think about that." She said worried. "What do you want to do?"

"I'd rather we wait until all this is over." I said. "The hunters should be our priority now. We have all the time in the world to start on our family."

"You're right." She smiled. "What do we do with Isaac?"

"We need more clues. Let's deal with the Council first and then we'll deal with our Gamma."

"Should I let him in now?" She asked.

"We can finish this at home." I said my voice husky as I leaned into her to kiss her cheek.

She shivered and looked at me with eyes slowly bleeding to the one of her wolf. She was extremely sensitive and the full moon would be a pain on both of us. I just hoped that I would be able to make my wolf behave. That was a bargain I was not looking forward to.

I let her get up before we would change our mind and she walked to open the door. I reajusted my clothes and stayed in the couch where I could see the whole room.

Isaac entered and he threw me a dirty look. That actually made me smirk. What did he expect? Helena and I were in love and mates so it was normal for us to want to be close.

"What did you want Isaac?" Helena asked as she sat next to me.

"The reports from border patrol." He said handing her the papers.

"Thank you." She said. "You'll be with us and Circe for the meeting with the Council."

"Of course." He nodded without letting out anything strange. "I'll do anything you ask of me."

He seemed to hint that I would not but I would not do him the favour of answering. Helena sighed clearly done with this and she sent Isaac away for the night.

"I can't believe that he would betray us... We've known each other since we were kids..." She said clearly dejected.

"I know it's hard." I said pulling her into my arms. "We'll get to the bottom of this. Maybe Isaac has met the hunters without knowing who they were. We can't draw conclusions right now."

"You're right." She sighed. "Let's go home. I'm clearly done with that day and you must be tired."

"I feel fine, don't worry." I chuckled. "I feel way better now."

We left our office behind and walked back to our house. Helena seemed to be the tired one while I just felt relaxed for the first time in forever. My wolf and I had an agreement and I did not feel the pressure of his anger anymore. I wondered if I could be around the pack now but I surely wanted to try. That would please Helena and that would make me feel like I belonged. I was sure of it.
