My best friend is my mate

Maximus' POV
The cell was just like the one I lived in for ten years but it had one new improvement. Helena. She was the only one I allowed near my cell. I was not ready to let the others come closer.

I knew and remembered who they were mainly because Helena would talk to me every day about them. She would come to see me and we would talk about the past. I lost many memories during years of abuse and torture. They wanted me to be their perfect weapon so they trained me for it. Tamed me would be more like it.

Helena looked like a beacon of light in this darkness. Everytime she would appear, I would feel calmer. She smelled good too. Like wildflowers. My wolf agreed that she was the only one we would not kill. Never. My only exception.

She visited at the same hour every day and she would always smile at me. She was wearing jeans and a white t-shirt as she walked into the basement where the cells were.

"Hey beautiful." She said.

She would always say that and it made my wolf proud that our mate was so sweet. I could smell the guards' fear every day but Helena was never scared of me.

"Hey." I replied weakly.

"Do you need anything?"

"I'm good. Don't worry"

"It's been a week already and you seem to be more at ease."

"It's because you're here. The guards are still scared of me."

"Really? Well, I'll talk to them."

"I can't believe you're Alpha now. Where is the girl who used to follow me around all day and roll in the mud?" I asked amused.

She laughed and that put a smile on my face. I missed it. Her laugh. My wolf wanted more but I did not trust us yet. Not even with our mate.

"I suppose that rolling in the mud lost its appeal when they took you away from me." She replied with a smile.

"Or you grew up. Not by much judging your size." I teased.

"Not everyone can be 1m88."

"Fine Mr Giant. 1m89. Do you feel ready to try to open the door today?"

We were taking steps in my rehabilitation. She would only talk at first and it improved my mood and made my wolf go to rest. A first for me who could always feel him pace inside my head. It was so peaceful to be able to be alone in my head and in total control.

Since that worked, she wanted to try to at least open the door but I was scared that my wolf would take that opportunity to go out. I did not want that. She felt my hesitation because she held her hand out to me. I took it and felt immediately better with the tingles of the mate bond. She rubbed my knuckles with her thumb to make me feel at ease and said.

"Take a deep breath. I'm just going to open the door. We won't go out today. If your wolf tries to come out, I'll kick his ass."

"I don't want to hurt you..."

"You're sweet but you couldn't even if you wanted to. I'm Alpha here so I can make you submit."

I hesitated. I really did not want to hurt my mate. I could not get over that if I ever did. That would break me for good and they might as well put me down like a rabid dog.

She waited for my answer patiently. Her emerald eyes were on me but they were not insistent. I could feel the warmth radiating from them. I slowly nodded and she did not let go of my hand as she opened the door.

I closed my eyes waiting for the beast to surface but my wolf stayed where he was. The hunters trained us to bolt and jump the werewolves as soon as the door opened but... It was different with Helena. She smiled softly at me as she came closer. She was now only a few meters away from my body. I wanted her closer. Why was she so far away?

She lifted a hand hesitantly to my face before putting it on my left cheek. It felt so good that I leaned into it. More. I wanted more.

I heard footsteps and so did she. I brought her closer to me by wrapping an arm around her waist and I pulled her into my chest. I looked toward the stairs where the footsteps echoed and gave a low growl as a warning. Helena shifted in my arms to look at who was interrupting us.

A man with auburn hair appeared and I knew it was Isaac. He looked at the both of us and I still growled so he would not come closer. He lifted his hands in the air to show me that he meant no harm before he looked at Helena.

"Sorry to interrupt but we need you upstairs Alpha."

"I'm on my way. Thank you Isaac."

Isaac went back up and now that the danger was out of the room, I looked back at Helena. She smiled softly at me and said.

"I'll be back soon. You did great today Maximus. I'm so proud of you."

"I still wanted Isaac dead." I said bitter.

"You made no movement so that's a victory in my book. You would have tried a week ago."

"I would have done it you mean."

"As if I'd let you."

She went on tiptoes and kissed my cheek before smiling brightly at me.

"I'll be back as soon as I can."

"I know."

I wanted more than a kiss on the cheek so I leaned into her and brushed my lips against hers. It felt so good that I wanted more. I crashed my lips on hers and wrapped her in an embrace. She responded in kind as she put her hands on my face to kiss me hungrily. I pressed her body against mine and I could feel myself grow hard. I wanted more. I needed my mate. I knew though what would happen if I did. I broke away from the kiss and she growled a bit. I could see the frustration on her face and that made me chuckle.

"Someone wanted more." I teased.

"Just like you." She replied poking at my pants.

Women had this advantage. It did not show right away but I could smell it in the air. She wanted us. I did not know what she saw because she cupped my face in her delicate hands and made me look at her.

"Talk to me Maximus."

I shook my head. How could I tell her? My love, I'm a monster.
