Chapter 30 Brett

Brett stood outside Jenny’s door knocking.

“Jenny.” She didn’t answer, so he tried the doorknob. She’d locked it. Fuck! Brett stormed away from her door just as Dustin walked into the penthouse. In his hands he held take out.

“Why do you look like you want to kill someone?” Dustin asked, walking into the kitchen and plating dinner.

“Jenny is mad and I don’t know why.” Brett opened the fridge grabbing a beer.

“What were you two talking about?”

“Comic Con. Justin is getting a booth and called to tell me. I warned him not to make a scene. Jenny heard me yelling at him.”

“Well, that doesn’t sound like it would start a fight,” Dustin remarked, pausing as he poured rice onto a plate.

“That is not what upset her. We were talking about the people who help decide who will be our next authors. I told her I run the science fiction and mystery division. She mentioned she wanted to meet Claudia. I said we could do that and will invite her to the wedding.” Dustin cocked his head to the side with a confused look.

“What wedding?” Dustin asked and Brett paused the beer bottle halfway to his mouth.

“Our wedding to Jenny.”

“When did we decide on that?” Dustin turned back to putting out food for them to eat.

“I assumed we’d get married to Jenny since she mated with us,” Brett answered, confused why Dustin didn’t seem to understand that.

“Do you think that is why she is mad?”

“When have we asked Jenny to marry us?” Dustin gave him a look that said he thought Brett was acting like an idiot.

“I suppose. Although I thought we implied we would be legally binding ourselves,” Brett answered with a shrug.

“You are an idiot. It doesn’t matter if she is our mate. We need to do this the right way. We have to ask her, and not right now. She will think we are asking to make her not mad. You and I will need to plan out a romantic way to ask her. Let’s get through Comic Con and then we can talk this through.” Brett stared at his brother. How did he know that was what upset Jenny?

“I feel like an idiot.”

“You are one. Go apologize and tell our girl dinner is here.” Dustin pointed to the hallway and Brett groaned. Rarely did Dustin order him to do anything, but he was right. Brett needed to apologize for assuming Jenny would marry them.

“Jenny,” Brett called with a gentle knock on the door.

“What?” she asked, her voice sharp.

“I want to apologize for assuming you would marry Dustin and me.” Brett leaned his head against the door.

“Did Dustin tell you what you did wrong?” she demanded, opening the door, startling him. Brett didn’t catch himself and crashed to the floor at her feet.

“Brett! Are you okay?” Jenny gasped, kneeling to check on him.

“It hurt just my pride.” Brett sat up, shaking his head. Jenny started laughing this time.

“I didn’t think you’d be leaning against the door.” Jenny brushed his hair out of his face.

“I am sorry about assuming you would marry us. It didn’t occur to me you’d expect a proposal. Dustin set me straight. I won’t ask you now, because we want to make it perfect for you. Just know we’ll be asking,” he told her, cupping her face in his hands..

“I am still mad at you for assuming. If you assume this, what else have you assumed I’d be okay with?” She held out a hand, and he took his, letting her help him off the floor. She released his hand and marched down the hall, anger radiating off of her.

“Dustin brought dinner home. He said it is ready.” Brett snagged her hand in his and walked her down the hallway to where Dustin waited in the kitchen. He must have changed into more comfortable clothes, because he no longer wore his suit. Instead, he had on sweats and a white undershirt.

“What did you get?” Jenny asked, letting go of Brett’s hand and giving Dustin a hello kiss. Her face softened when she looked at Dustin. Of course, she wasn’t mad at Dustin.

“I picked up Chinese food.” Dustin handed Jenny a plate, then gave one to Brett. They all settled in the living room to watch their favorite binge TV show. Brett settled next to Jenny while Dustin took a seat in a large armchair. Jenny stood and walked to her own chair, glaring at him. Dustin raised an eyebrow at Brett and snuck in his mind.

Did you apologize?

Yes, I did. She is mad; I assumed she would marry us.

I would too. I am mad at you. You could have completely ruined everything with Jenny.

I told her we would be proposing.

You have some groveling to do. You better make sure Jenny forgives you before Comic Con.

I’ll figure it out.

The day of Comic Con, Brett awoke without Jenny in the bed. She was still showing her anger with him and he hadn’t figured out how to show her he wouldn’t assume anything about her again. Dustin lay on his side, still passed out. Getting out of bed, Brett went hunting for Jenny. He heard the front door open and wondered who was going into their home. Walking down the hall he saw her coming in sweat covered with headphones in her ears. Looking her over he smiled, she looked amazing covered in sweat.

“Jenny?” he called softly, not wanting to scare her. She looked up and immediately pulled her headphones out.

“Brett.” She went to slip pass him, but he caught her wrist.

“Jenny, I apologized. I am sorry I assumed you would marry Dustin and me. What can I do to get you to forgive me?” Brett felt desperate. He hated her being mad at him. She’d refused sex the past few nights. When they slept she curled into Dustin’s arms.

“I know you apologized, but I don’t know if you really understand why I am mad at you.”

“You are right, I don’t know.”

“I am mad because you’ve been deciding for me without asking. Dustin asks me when he makes choices for the three of us. You don’t.”

“What did I decide about lately?”

“Aside from the marriage thing? How you are dealing with Justin. He is making waves about my name in the graphic novel community. I know, because my friends have been sending me messages telling me what he is doing. You have said nothing about how the lawyer is dealing with this! I need to be kept in the loop. The only reason I knew about Justin coming to Comic Con today is because I overheard your phone conversation.” Jenny yanked her wrist out of his hand and marched into her bathroom. She slammed the door and Brett heard the distinct snick of the lock.

Let me know what you think!
