Meeting the Family
We woke up around 9:00 in the morning, which was late for Jake, but it felt good to sleep in a little. We laid in bed for a little bit and cuddled. I had my head on his shoulder with his arm under my neck and wrapped around my back. I placed my right hand on his chest and was tracing his muscles with my fingers, but it must have tickled him a little as he reached up and entwined our fingers.
“Do you think your mom and sister will like me?”
“I told you before they would and I still believe it.”
“But they don’t know my whole story, or what we know of it so far. What if they ask me a bunch of questions I can’t answer?”
“Then we answer what we can and tell them what we know. Baby, my mother hasn’t seen me with a girl since high school, so I think she will be ecstatic no matter what.”
“Really. I’ve never introduced them before to anyone other than Jordan and a few business associates at the office.”
“I just…” I rolled onto my back with Jake’s arm still behind me, “I just want to make a good impression. I’m afraid I’ll screw up somehow.”
“There is no way you can do that,” he rolled onto his side and put his hand against my cheek. “I’ll be by your side the entire evening if you need me to be, but baby, you need to relax and not stress over it. Can you do that for me?”
“I’ll...I’ll try,” I looked into his beautiful blue eyes, “I promise.”
“That’s all I ask,” he smiled and leaned in for a kiss.
Jake and I got up and went about getting ourselves ready for the day. We didn’t really have anything planned until we started dinner, which we agreed to make together. I decided on wearing a spring dress with my sandals. I fixed my hair and brushed my teeth and headed to the living room.
As I walked into the living area, I could smell something baking. I walked over to the kitchen as Jake was pulling out a pan with cinnamon rolls from the oven. He added the frosting and plated them up and brought them to the island where I took a seat at one of the stools. They looked delicious. We enjoyed the rolls as we talked about what we wanted to do to pass the time.
It was still early enough in the day, so we decided on visiting the Shedd Aquarium. We figured we had until about 4:00 before we had to get home and start prepping for dinner. We knew they planned on arriving around 5:00, but figured we didn’t need to eat immediately. Since it was the weekend and Jake didn’t have to work, he had given Dylan the weekend off. Jake led me to the garage below the condo building and showed me a few of the cars he owned. He helped me into one and we headed to the Aquarium.
“It’s so beautiful in here,” I told Jake. I could have spent all day there. We saw sharks, whales, fish galore, turtles, penguins and even watched a dolphin show and a sea lion show. Jake, being the man he is, somehow managed to get us up and close with the penguins and dolphins and we got to assist the keepers in feeding them. I even managed to get a little kiss from one of the dolphins.
Just before 4:00, we left and headed back to the condo. As Jake drove, he had one hand on the steering wheel and the other was holding my hand resting on my thigh. “God, he is so handsome. I could stare at him all day long,” I thought as I was watching him as he drove. Every so often, he would look back at me and smile.
When we got back to the garage, Jake parked the car and came around and helped me out. He led me to the elevator and we went up. I started to think back to last weekend when we came back from dinner and looked over at Jake. He was looking back at me and I licked my lips. Next thing I know, he had me pushed against the wall and was kissing me passionately. Ding… The doors opened to our floor and we walked to the door and caught our breaths.
“I had a great time today,” Jake said as we entered.
“I did too,” I replied. “Thank you for taking me.”
“It was my pleasure,” he smiled. Jake looked at his watch and sighed. “Well, we better get going, Mom and Lizzie will be here shortly.” Just then his phone rang; I went into the kitchen while he answered it.
We decided on making chicken breasts covered with mushrooms, served with mashed potatoes and broccoli. We would start with a salad, so I started getting the food from the fridge to put that together, since I figured that would be the easiest.
Jake came in as I was getting it all set on the counter. “We need to make an additional plate,” he said, not sounding too thrilled about it.
“Is someone else joining us?” I asked.
“Lizzie is apparently bringing along her male friend,” he huffed.
“You didn’t tell me Lizzie had a boyfriend,” I asked with a smile. I heard Jake mumble something when I used the word ‘boyfriend.’
“I just found out myself. Apparently, they have been together several months and she thought it was time she introduced us, since I was going to introduce you to her and Mom.”
“Let’s get started then. This isn’t going to make itself.”
I started on the salad and cut up some lettuce, added some sliced cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and croutons. I poured the dressing into a serving bowl I found and set that up on the island to work on the rest of the food. Jake was working on getting the chicken on a pan and into the oven. I cleaned off the potatoes and peeled them, while Jake put them on to boil on the stovetop. He also put the broccoli in a pan to sauté them, but we would wait a little bit since they won’t take long to make. He sautéed the mushrooms and added some gravy which we will pour over the chicken and potatoes. Now we just wait until everything is ready and his family arrives.
Just after 5:00, we heard the doorman buzz up and announce that Jake’s family had arrived. Jake told him to send them up. While we waited for them to arrive, I could feel my heart beat quicker and my hands started to sweat. Jake noticed and put his hands on my shoulders and told me to relax and take a few deep breaths. “Why am I so nervous?” I thought to myself.
Knock, knock, knock…
I took a deep breath, while Jake opened the door and greeted his mother and sister. He led them over to me standing in the living area.
“Mom, Lizzie...this is Stacy, my girlfriend,” he said with a smile while looking at me. “Stacy, this is my mom, Connie, and my sister, Elizabeth.”
“It’s nice to meet the both of you,” I said, while extending my hand to shake.
“It’s so nice to meet you too,” Connie said, but instead of taking my hand, she pulled me into a hug. Lizzie also gave me a hug and then stepped next to her ‘male friend.’
“Jake, Stacy...I’d like you to meet my boyfriend, Todd. Todd, this is my brother, Jake and you heard him introduce Stacy.” I shook Todd’s hand first and then he extended his to Jake. I could see Jake hesitate, but I caught his eye and he finally took it and gave it a shake.
“I’m going to check on the food, please make yourselves comfortable,” Jake said as he walked back to the kitchen.
I led Connie, Lizzie and Todd to the living room and we each took a seat.
“So Stacy, how long have you and Jake been together?” Connie asked me.
“Well, we’ve known each other about a month, but have only been together for the last couple of weeks,” I answered.
“A couple of weeks, huh. Well, you must be pretty special. I haven’t met anyone Jake has had a relationship with since high school.”
“Maybe that’s because I haven’t really been in a relationship with anyone since then,” Jake said as he came back into the room and stood behind the chair I was sitting in.
“What about that one in college, I was sure you had something there?” she asked.
“It was something, but not what I ended up needing,” he replied. “Lizzie, how about you and Todd. How long have you been seeing each other?”
“We have known each other since Freshman year, but only started dating around the new year,” Lizzie answered. “We took things slow at first, but I felt it was time for you two to meet.”
I heard the timer go off on the chicken and joined Jake as we went back into the kitchen to finish up the rest of the food. I came out after a few minutes and announced that supper was just about ready and they are welcome to come over to the table. I then asked what each would like to drink and gathered them up and brought to the table. Jake plated up the food and we carried them out and handed them to his mother, sister and Todd. He then helped me to a chair and brought our plates in and we all began eating.
“This is delicious,” Lizzie commented and Todd agreed. “So Stacy, are you from around here? Has Jake met your family yet?”
“Ummm…” I couldn’t think of what to say and looked up at Jake.
“She only recently moved here and no, I haven’t met her family yet,” Jake answered for me. I thanked him with my eyes, but my nerves were getting to me again so I took a deep breath to relax myself.
Lizzie and Connie looked at each other with a questioning look and then Connie said, “Well, maybe one day we can all have a nice dinner together and we can all get to know each other.”
“That would be nice,” I said. “I’ll...I’ll see what I can do.”
The rest of dinner was filled with questions from Connie to Jake and from Jake to Lizzie and Todd and Lizzie and Connie asking more about me. I did the best I could to answer them, but it was difficult at times since I really didn’t know the answers myself. I slowly began to relax as the meal went on.
When we were finished with the meal, Connie, Lizzie and myself cleared the table and started cleaning up the kitchen while Jake and Todd went to the living room to talk.
“He better not be scaring Todd off,” Lizzie fretted as she tried to listen to their conversation, but couldn’t hear it very well.
“Honey, I’m sure he’s just giving him the big brother talk. My brother did the same thing years ago.” Connie reassured her. “It’s good for them to talk, besides, I’m sure Jake will be on the receiving end in the near future as well,” Connie looked at me as she said that.
“I’m not so sure about that,” I said, “I only have a younger sister.” At least I think that’s all I have. I hope my dreams were right and that is the truth.
“If not the big brother talks then, he’ll get it from your father.” She smiled as she said that.
“Yeah, maybe.” I replied.
We finished washing and drying the dishes and cleaned up the counters and stove and went to join the men in the living room. As I passed by Jake, he grabbed me and pulled me onto his lap on one of the chairs. I’m pretty sure I turned beet red since his mom was watching us.
“So Jake, I hope you weren’t too bad to Todd,” Lizzie said.
“Not at all,” Jake smirked. “I think we have a pretty good understanding, isn’t that right?” He nodded towards Todd.
“We certainly do,” Todd answered with a smirk of his own.
The evening continued on with everyone talking and Connie sharing stories of Jake and Lizzie when they were younger. I loved hearing those stories and watched Jake as she shared some embarrassing things. I could tell he wasn’t thrilled, but he laughed along with the rest of us. “I love this side of him,” I thought.
It was getting pretty late when Connie stood up, “I’m heading to bed. Thanks for tonight Jake, and it was really a great pleasure to meet you Stacy.” I nodded and smiled and Jake did the same. She went back to the room next to mine which she has stayed in the past.
“I think we are also going to turn in,” Lizzie announced. She and Todd got off of the couch. “Thank you Jake, it was really great catching up with you and meeting you Stacy. See you in the morning.” They walked to her room, leaving Jake and I alone.
“So, you survived the night,” Jake chuckled.
“I guess I did,” I smiled.
“Are you ready for bed?”
“I am, but…” I didn’t know how to tell him that I should probably sleep in my own room.
“But what?” he asked.
“Maybe I should sleep in my room tonight. I mean, we’ve only been together a couple of weeks, I don’t want your mother to think…”
“Too bad what she thinks. There is no reason why you can’t stay with me,” he interrupted.
“Jake, please. It’s just for tonight. I’ll be back with you tomorrow night, OK?”
“Are you sure?” he asked while pushing my hair behind my ear.
“Yes, I’m sure.” I looked into his eyes and smiled.
“OK, but just for tonight,” he said, and leaned in for a kiss. I kissed him back and then we went to our own rooms.
I went to the bathroom and took a nice long shower, dried off, threw on a T-shirt and then climbed into bed. I turned out the light on the nightstand after making sure my phone was on the charger and tried to fall asleep. “Maybe staying here alone wasn’t the best option,” I thought as I just laid there. After what seemed like an eternity I fell asleep.
