Let's Dance

As our guests finished eating, the wait staff cleaned off the tables and moved several out of the way to open up for a dance floor. My parents hired a DJ and he was setting up at the front of the dance space.

Meanwhile, Jake and I went to cut the wedding cake.

Our guests had the option for a slice of cake or a single cupcake.

Since Jake and I fed each other a piece of our cake, I also had to try a red velvet cupcake. Jake came up behind me and took a bite as well.

“Hey, who said you could…” Jake kissed me. I smiled and returned the kiss.

“Jake and Stacy, please come out to the dance floor,” the DJ announced, interrupting our little moment.

Jake took me by the hand and led me to the center of the dance floor. “Congratulations Jake and Stacy on your marriage. This is your time in the spotlight as you share your first dance as husband and wife!” Everyone cheered.

The DJ began playing our song and Jake pulled me close as we danced together.

“Every time our eyes meet,

this feeling inside me

Is almost more than I can take.

Baby, when you touch me,

I can feel how much you love me

And it just blows me away.

I’ve never been this close to anyone or anything

I can hear your thoughts, I can see your dreams.

I don’t know how you do what you do,

I’m so in love with you

It just keeps getting better.

I wanna spend the rest of my life

With you by my side

Forever and ever.

Everything little that you do

Baby, I’m amazed by you.”

I laid my head on his shoulder while he held me close as the song came to an end. I looked up at Jake and smiled. He smiled back, whispered “I love you,” and kissed me. At that moment, Jake and I were the only two people in the world and everything else was forgotten.

Until the music picked up tempo and people started piling onto the dance floor around us. I laughed and joined in with Jake by my side. After several dances, I had to take a break. Jake had already left and was chatting with various guests.

“Sarah, I’m going to go get a drink,” I said as we were dancing together.

I walked over to our table and drank some water. I took this moment to look around the room. There were so many people dancing, a group of people chatting in nearly every corner of the room, people taking pictures, my parents laughing and talking with other family members, and finally my eyes landed on Jake talking with Jordan and some other friends. I smiled to myself and realized at that moment that I am where I’m supposed to be, right here, right now and everything that has ever happened to me, led me to where I am today. It was a perfect day.

Jake must have felt my eyes on him as he turned and looked at me and smiled. He excused himself from his friends and started walking towards me.

“Hi,” he said.

“Hi,” I replied.

“What’s going through that head of yours?” Jake asked.

“Just thinking how perfect this day is and how blessed I am.”

“It is pretty perfect, isn’t it? Although I have to say, it is I that am truly blessed. I am so grateful that you are in my life and willingly agreed to share it with me for the rest of it.” Jake pulled me into his arms and placed his forehead against mine.

I smiled and wrapped my arms around his back. “I love you Jake,” I whispered.

“I love you, too.” He kissed me softly and pulled me into a hug.

“Attention ladies and gentlemen, boys and is time for the grand march!!” The DJ announced and began the music.

All the couples lined up just outside of the entrance to the hall.

“Introducing Thomas and Victoria, cousins of the bride…” Tom and Vicky walked into the room and danced around the floor.

“Next we have Todd and Elizabeth, the brother-in-law and sister of the groom…” Todd and Lizzie entered and followed Tom and Vicky.

“Welcome the best man and best friend of the groom, Jordan and the lovely maid of honor and sister of the bride, Sarah…” Jordan led Sarah into the room and danced around the floor.

“The couple we are all here for...please welcome Jake and Stacy Masterson the handsome groom and beautiful bride…” Jake led me onto the dance floor as everyone cheered and whistled. We danced and he spun me in a few circles as we promenaded around the dance floor.

Each couple then lined up in the middle of the dance floor and formed an archway. As Jake and I went to pass under the arch, we were stopped by Tom and Vicky and trapped in their arms. “Kiss, kiss, kiss…” we heard everyone chanting. We laughed, but gave them what they wanted and kissed. We were then let go to continue through the arch. Each time we passed under a new couple, we were trapped and released after a kiss.

When we reached the end of the tunnel, the music turned into a slow song and each couple danced. As the music continued, the DJ announced several times to switch partners until I danced with each of the groomsmen and Jake danced with each of the bridesmaids and ended back up together.

Next came the father-daughter dance. My father joined me on the dance floor and Jake handed me back to him. We danced to a song of his choosing, “I Loved Her First,” by Heartland. As we danced, I recalled a time when I used to dance with him by standing on his feet and he swayed me side to side as a little girl. Without realizing it, I kicked off my shoes and stepped up onto his shoes. He wrapped his arms around me and held me close and I cried into his shoulder. I could hear him crying on mine as well.

But I loved her first, I held her first

And a place in my heart will always be hers

From the first breath she breathed

When she first smiled at me

I knew the love of a father runs deep

And I prayed that she’d find you someday

But it’s still hard to give her away

I loved her first.

“Daddy...I will always love you. I’ve missed you so much,” I continued to cry.

“I’ve missed you too baby girl. I’m sorry I couldn’t…”

“Shhhh, it’s ok. I’m ok.” I interrupted.

The song finished and I gave him a big hug. My mom and sister joined us and we all started blubbering like fools. I’m sure we looked silly to the others, but I really needed this right now and my emotions ran wild. We finally broke apart and laughed when we realized how quiet it was and we were still standing in the middle of the dance floor. Sarah broke the silence…”Carry on DJ!”

As we walked to the side, Jake came up and gave me a hug and asked if I was alright. I told him I was and he kissed me as he went to meet his mother on the dance floor for the mother-son dance. Connie chose the song “Because You Loved Me,” by Celine Dion. I watched Jake and his mom dance. I never really see him show emotion to anyone but me, so it was really neat to watch this in front of me and everyone here.

You were my strength when I was weak

You were my voice when I couldn’t speak

You were my eyes when I couldn’t see

You saw the best there was in me

Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach

You gave me faith ’cause you believed

I’m everything I am

Because you love me.

The song ended and Jake gave his mother a hug and led her to the side of the dance floor. I gave her a hug as well when she approached me and I thanked her for raising a wonderful man.

“Alright single ladies...please come to the dance floor, it’s time to catch the bouquet. Jake, please escort your lovely bride to the front of the crowd that has very quickly formed.” So many women ran to the floor and gathered around including my sister and Jake’s mom.

“Cover her eyes and spin her round and round....1...2...3 and let it go!” I threw the bouquet over my head behind me and heard the commotion as everyone scrambled to catch it. I turned around and laughed when I saw the bouquet in Connie’s hand. I looked over at Jake who looked stunned. I elbowed him in the ribs and he just shook his head and began to chuckle.

“Congratulations to the lovely lady who caught the bouquet. Please wait nearby while the single men get their shot at the garter. But before all you young men come forward, I need the best man to join Jake and Stacy up here.”

Jordan walked up to us and took my hand and led me to the middle of the floor. He got onto one knee and sat me down on the other while Jake eyed me from the other end. As the DJ turned on some sexy music, Jake strode up to me and got down on his knees. After giving me a wink, he lifted my dress just enough so he could slip his head underneath.

“Oh my parents are watching this,” I blushed at my thoughts. I felt Jake grab the garter with his teeth while he rubbed my leg with his fingertips. He pulled down the garter to my ankle and slipped it over my foot and out from under my dress. He looked back up at me with a grin, stood up, grabbed my hand and pulled me up with him.

“Hey...what about me?” Jordan teased Jake about not helping him up.

“You’ll make it,” Jake laughed, but grabbed Jordan and pulled him up.

“Gentlemen, time to line up. Stacy, please bring your husband up here to the front.”

Several single men came out to the dance floor and rolled up their sleeves. “Oh no, this is going to get a little competitive,” I chuckled to myself.

“Stacy, please cover Jake’s eyes and spin him around...1...2...3,” Jake tossed the garter over his shoulder. The guys went crazy for it and even tackled each other to the ground until a friend of Jake’s stood up with it in his hands.

“If we can have the beautiful lady who caught the bouquet come and join the young lad who caught the garter, we shall have one final dance to end the grand march. Jake and Stacy will join you on the floor.”

Connie joined Jake’s friend, Chris, and they danced while Jake and I danced to “What a Wonderful World,” by Louis Armstrong.

The night carried on with dancing, visiting with everyone and watching everyone have a great time. When midnight rolled around, I was beyond exhausted and definitely ready to turn in for the night. Most people had left and those remaining were cleaning up the decorations and putting the gifts in our car to take home the next day.

One of the windows was open, and I found myself standing in front of it staring into the night sky.

“Hey there beautiful,” Jake came up behind me and put his arms around my waist. I leaned back against his chest and closed my eyes. “Let’s go up to our room,” he whispered into my ear. I turned around and he took my hand and led me over to the last of our family.

“We are heading up to our room. Thank you for helping us tonight, we really appreciate it.” Jake told his mother and my parents who were the last to remain. “We will meet you all for breakfast tomorrow morning.”

I gave my parents a hug and then hugged Connie. Jake hugged her and my parents as well and we left hand in hand. We were staying at the hotel, in the honeymoon suite, so we didn’t have to go too far.
