A Day On My Own

When I finally woke up, the sun was shining brightly into the room. “I guess I forgot to close the blinds last night,” I said to myself. I looked at the clock on the nightstand and saw that it was after 10:00 am. I sat up and stretched. The memories of my dreams came back to me...I think I had the same dreams over and over last night. “What do they mean? Could Jake be right...were they actually a memory?”

I finally got out of bed, went to the bathroom, brushed my teeth and my hair and headed to the bedroom next to mine. Jake said that his sister might have some clothes left here...I sure hope so.

I found the closet and sure enough, there were a few outfits left hanging there. I grabbed a pair of leggings with a matching shirt and looked in the dressers to see if there was anything else to borrow. I know it’s gross to borrow other people’s undergarments, but I really needed something and it doesn’t look like she is here that often. I went through the drawers and found a matching bra and panty set with the tags still attached. Thank God, they are new! I also grabbed a pair of socks and went back to my room.

Since I showered last night, I didn’t think I needed to again, so I started getting dressed. The panties fit, but the bra was a little big in the cup area. “I guess his sister is more developed than me,” I chuckled to myself. The leggings fit nicely and the top was a little baggy, but comfortable. I threw on my socks, pulled my hair up into a ponytail with a rubber band I found and headed out to the kitchen.

When I got there, I saw a note sitting on the island from Jake. “Stacy, I had to leave for work and didn’t want to wake you up. There is plenty of food in the fridge so help yourself to anything. Look through the cupboards to find what you need. I’ll be home around 5:00 or 6:00 tonight. I left a key here on the counter for you if you decide to leave to look around and some cash in the envelope under the keys. Be sure to ask the door attendant for any assistance if you need it...I’ve already told him about you and asked him to help in any way. Be safe and call me if you need anything...there is a phone in the kitchen and living area and my number is 312-555-0123. See you tonight! Jake”

I put the letter down and went to the fridge to see what he had to offer. I honestly don’t know how to cook, or if I do, I don’t remember. I opened the freezer and saw he had frozen waffles, so I pulled out a couple and found the toaster on the counter and put them on to toast. After looking around some more, I found the syrup, took a banana, grabbed a plate and a fork and waited for the toaster to pop. “POP” I grabbed the hot waffles, poured syrup all over and enjoyed my first breakfast outside of the hospital!!

After finishing, I washed the plate and fork in the sink and set them in the rack to dry. I threw away the banana peel and put the syrup away. I decided to take this time to walk around the condo more slowly to see what Jake all had.

I walked around the living area and looked at all the high-end electronics he had: huge flat screen TV, speakers around the room, a few machines on the stand under the TV, and a fancy machine that played music. It was already playing quietly when I got up and I left it alone as I didn’t want to break anything.

Behind the kitchen is the master bedroom, Jake’s bedroom. Do I go in there? Should I go in there? I opened the door, but quickly closed it. I didn’t want to invade his privacy.

I checked out the other bedroom that I hadn’t seen yet and it looked just like the one I was staying in. Each bedroom had a bed, night stand, dresser, a flat screen TV, closet and bathroom. Across from the bedrooms there was a den with a desk and more fancy machines. Behind that was the laundry room and next to that was another smaller bathroom.

Lastly, I went up the stairs and up to the rooftop terrace. The weather was beautiful this morning and the breeze felt amazing on my face. I saw there were two small gardens on each side of the terrace full of spring flowers. They smell wonderful...I picked a flower, took a deep whiff of it and smiled to myself. I could stay up here’s beautiful up here! I sat down on a chair and let the sun soak my body as I closed my eyes.

A couple of hours later, I decided I needed to do something. I really have no clue where I am, but I did see the park and zoo not far from the condo so I decided I would go there. Nothing could happen to me...right? I went back into Jake’s sister’s room to see if she left any shoes. I found a pair of sneakers and I hoped they fit. I tried them on but they were a little loose. I tied them tighter and they stayed on and would work for now.

I went back to the kitchen, grabbed the keys and then grabbed the envelope with cash. I snuck a peek and saw several $20 bills. When I was looking for shoes, I found a small bag hanging in the closet and decided to use that to carry the keys and money. I also took Jake’s letter and wrote down the address on the back so I knew where to return to if I got lost and put that in the bag.

I left the condo and made sure the door was locked. I took the elevator down to the lobby and headed to the front door. I introduced myself to the day attendant as Jake said to and asked him the best way to get to the park and zoo. He told me to go several blocks north and a couple blocks east and I would see the entrance to the zoo and he told me the zoo was free to go through. I thanked him and headed out on my first solo journey…

To people watching me, I must have looked like a little girl seeing the zoo for the first time. I had to check out everything...the animals, the flowers, the food stalls, the shops...EVERYTHING! I bought a few souvenirs at the shop for myself and for Jake to thank him for what he has done so far to help me. I grabbed something to eat for lunch and snacks as I walked around. I saw kids running around yelling for their parents to see the lions, penguins or giraffes; I saw couples strolling hand in hand or stopping for a quick kiss; workers going into enclosures to feed the animals or clean them...I was in heaven. I truly think this is the first time I have ever seen something like this...maybe??

When I came back to the entrance, the clock in the visitor center said it was 4:20.’s been over four hours since I got here. Time flies, but I sure had a lot of fun. I figured I had better get back to the condo before Jake got home from work, so I started walking back the way I came.

I arrived back at the condo about thirty minutes later and greeted the attendant. He asked me if I had a good time and I said I did. I headed to the elevator and back up to the penthouse. I unlocked the door, went inside, dropped the bags onto the couch, kicked my shoes off, sat down out on the balcony and waited for Jake to come home.
