Evening In

“Hello? Stacy...are you here?” Jake said as he entered the condo.

Jake searched around the condo, but didn’t see her anywhere. When he came back to the living area, he noticed the balcony door was cracked open and went to close it. That’s when he saw her sitting on a chair basking in the sunlight as it began its descent, asleep. “God she is gorgeous. Should I wake her? She looks so peaceful.”

He quietly walked over to her, bent down to her level and brushed his fingers over her cheek.

I opened my eyes after feeling something or someone touch my cheek...just barely. Jake was kneeling in front of me and smiled when I looked at him. “How long was he watching me sleep? I hope I wasn’t drooling.”

“Hi,” I whispered.

“Hi,” he chuckled as he responded.

“When did you get home?” I asked.

“Just a few minutes ago. I called out, but you didn’t hear me I guess,” he answered.

“No I didn’t. I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry, I just was a little worried that you were gone.”

“I’m still here. Besides where would I go?” I smiled a little.

“Anywhere you want, I suppose, but I’m glad you’re still here.” He smiled back at me and offered me his hand to go back inside. “Shall we look for something to eat?”

“I was thinking about making you something before you got home, but one-I fell asleep and two-I don’t know how to cook.” I laughed nervously. “Besides, I don’t really know what you like…”

“We have two options then. I can make us something or we can order out for the night. Personally, I’d rather order out.”

“Then let’s order out,” I replied.

Jake called up a local restaurant and ordered our meals. While we waited for the delivery, we sat down on his couch and talked about our day.

“How was work today Jake?” I asked.

“Same old, same old,” he replied. “Another day looking over the reports, meeting with clients or prospective clients and making the company profitable. What about you, what did you do today?”

“Well I slept in this morning, read your letter, had breakfast here and gave myself a tour of the place and ended up sitting on the terrace for a couple of hours enjoying the warmth of the sun. Then I went to the Zoo for the afternoon before coming back and falling asleep on the balcony.”

“You went to the zoo without me?” he asked sarcastically.

“I thought about waiting for you, but I really wanted to go. I felt a little out of place being there by myself, but I took my time and really enjoyed the experience. Oh, I got you a little gift to show my appreciation of you helping me out.” I reached over to the side of the couch where I threw the bags earlier to grab the souvenirs I picked up.

“You really didn’t have to get me anything.”

“I know, but I wanted to.” I pulled out a musical snow globe that featured the zoo animals. When you wind up the bottom, it plays “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. “This is to thank you and remember me forever. I got myself one as well, to remember you and all that you have done for me.”

“Thank you Stacy. I will cherish this gift forever,” he said with a big smile. “I don’t think I could ever forget you,” he whispered quietly.

Just then the door attendant buzzed up saying the food was here. Jake told him to send him up to the door. I went to the kitchen to grab a couple of plates and silverware and brought them to the table. A few minutes later, Jake came to the table with dinner: spaghetti with meatballs and breadsticks. He served us both the spaghetti and we enjoyed our first meal together at home.

After dinner, I cleaned off the table and Jake helped with the dishes. He went to change into something more comfortable, while I curled up on the couch to wait for him. He joined me a short bit later wearing sweats and a T-shirt.

“Want to watch a movie?” he asked me.

“Sure, but you pick as I don’t know of any.” I felt a little sad all of sudden when I realized how much I don’t know about the world...or have forgotten.

If Jake noticed my reaction, he didn’t say anything. He turned on the TV and opened up a movie guide and started going through the list. “I haven’t seen this one in awhile. It’s a romantic comedy, I’ll think you’ll like it.”

The Proposal? What’s it about?” I asked.

“Well, it is about a woman who is this stern boss that most of her employees dislike. She is from Canada and her visa has expired. She is to be deported back to Canada, but she doesn’t want to go. She proposes a deal to her assistant to marry her so she can stay. I won’t spoil the rest of it, but I’ll think you’ll figure out what will happen between them.”

Jake started the movie and we began to watch it together. As the movie went on, I noticed that Jake, or I, had moved closer together on the couch until we were sitting shoulder to shoulder. By the end of the movie, Jake’s arm was around my shoulders and my head was resting on his shoulder. I felt so relaxed and at peace...it seemed so natural to me. “I wonder if he feels the same way?” I thought to myself.

“I could sit like this all night if she’d let me. I’ve only known her for a short time, but this feels so natural. I can’t remember the last time I’ve watched a movie, yet alone cuddled up with someone while watching it. I hope she lets me do this again.” Jake’s thoughts made him smile as he looked down at Stacy. “I could really get used to this.”

As the movie ended, I sat up a little more and yawned. I didn’t realize how late it was getting.

“Are you getting tired?” Jake asked me.

“Yeah, a little,” I replied and yawned again.

He laughed a little at my response. “God, I love to hear him laugh like that.”

“Why don’t you go get ready for bed. I’ll bring you another shirt to wear for the night. Tomorrow we are going shopping.”

“Jake...you really don’t need to do that. I can wear what I have and just wash them.”

“Stacy, we are going shopping for you. I want to make sure you have enough, this isn’t up for discussion.”

I looked down defeatedly and walked to my room. “I love that he wants to help me, but I can never pay him back for all this. What is his reason for doing all this for me? Do I deserve to be treated this way?”

I completed my nighttime routine and grabbed the new T-shirt Jake left for me. After getting dressed, Jake knocked on the door.

“Come in,” I said.

“I just wanted to make you have everything you need for tonight and make sure you’re comfortable.”

“I’m good. Thank you Jake.”

“OK, well, I’m heading to bed then. Sweet dreams Stacy.”

“You too. Goodnight.”

“Goodnight.”

He closed the door and went back to his room. I climbed into bed, but just laid there for a long time. After what seemed like hours, I drifted into another restless sleep.
