Blurb

After the Japanese tsunami of March 2011 destroys their home in a small fishing village, Sachiko is left asking what became of her husband, Harry and infant son, Tashi. Try as she might to turn her back on what has gone before and start a new life in Tokyo, the answers to those questions come back to haunt her. Along the way the book examines attitudes to mental health, the now-discontinued practice of ‘mabiki’ (systematic infanticide) and the experience of being a ‘gaijin’ (foreigner) in famously monocultural Japan. Fukushima fugitives is aimed at readers who enjoy contemporary fiction and those who have a taste for Japanese writing. The book was researched during a month-long trip to Japan that included visits to all the locations covered, as well as interviews with survivors of the tsunami. It was in part inspired by their strength and fortitude, and in part by a long-term love affair with Japanese literature.
