Chapter 5: A Coincidence

❅◐𝗔𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗿𝗮'𝘀 𝗣𝗢𝗩◑❅

You don't belong here and I wish that you'll leave someday

Your parents are dead and now you're trying to steal mine

I woke up with a jerk, my body shivering from the coldness of the tiles beneath me. My body was numb, my skin and lips were chapping from severe dryness and my head was pounding.

I reached for my phone and with shaly fingers, I dialled Sarah's number. I didn't want to stay here anymore. I wanted to leave. I'd rather stay at the foster house until I turned 18.

"Hello? Aurora, is everything alright?" the sound of her voice put me at ease.

"No" I croaked, my voice thick with emotion.

"What happened? Do you want me to come over?" her tone became worried.

"Y-yes. I- I- d-don't want-" I began to cry again.

"Aurora, I'm coming this instant! I don't care if it's 5 in the morning. Please don't cry" I heard shuffling at her end of the line. I sniffled lightly before wiping the tears away and composing myself.

"Aurora, good mo-" Claire stopped talking and I quickly cut the call. She immediately ran over and knelt besides me.

"Your temperature is very low Aurora. What happened?" she slipped her hand underneath me and carried me to the bed. She turned the heater as well as the electric blanket on.

"Nothing" I shook my head slowly and she frowned.

"I know you're lying. Tell me, I promise I won't get mad" Claire stroked my hair as I swallowed.

"Just jitters. I miss the foster home" I lied through my teeth, feeling a tad bit guilty for that. I was too nice and I didn't Camille getting into trouble because I couldn't take facts as they were.

"Oh, do you not feel welcome or there's something you want that we're not giving you?" she questioned as I looked up at the ceiling, Camille's words still echoing in my mind.

"No I'm fine. I love it here, everything is... Wonderful" I faked a smile.

"Okay. I'm going to make some warm soup for you, prepare a hot bath and stay here with you until you recover. Please don't do it again, I got so worried Aurora" she kissed my forehead before going out of the room.

I exhaled loudly, my throat aching from hunger since I never got to eat the food I had taken yesterday. I wanted to vent my sadness but I didn't know how and to who. In less than 5 minutes, Sarah barged into the room with panic written all over her face.

"Aurora, I thought you were dying. My goodness, Claire told me that you miss the foster home. I thought you wanted to leave that place for good" she sat on my bedside before taking my freezing hands into her warmer ones. My long silence signaled her that it was a lie.

"What happened? I promise I won't tell Claire" she lowered her voice as I sat up.

"Camille. She told me that I don't belong here and said stuff like since my parents have died I'm trying to steal hers. S-she-"

"Shhh, it's okay. I'm here now" she wrapped her arms around me as my emotional floodgates opened. She held me close as I just cried until I couldn't anymore.

"Listen here, Camille is insecure. That's why she doesn't like you. You're very beautiful, smart and well-behaved. You are every parent's ideal child and she's jealous of everything about you" Sarah looked me in the eye as she spoke.

"Bullies are actually scared and timid inside. Trust me, if you stood up to her she'd have been the one to cry" we both laughed at this, making my mood much lighter.

"You think?" I sniffled and she hummed.

"Definitely. She doesn't want Claire and Walter to stop paying attention to her because of you. Don't let her bring you down, it was saod on impulse and I'm sure she won't apologise because she has a big ego" Sarah rubbed my shoulder gently as I smiled for the first time today.

"So stop wasting your precious tears Aurora. You're a queen so act like one okay? Nothing anyone says defines you" she smiled as I wrapped my arms around her. I considered her my real mother and it had been like that since I was 6.

I really wanted to live with her but she had 2 kids of her own and she was a single mom on top of that. I vowed to help her with fumds and take care of her once I had grown up because of how much she had to and was still sacrificing for me despite having her own children to handle.

"I love you so much Sarah, I literally don't know what I would've-"

"I'm here anytime you need me and I love you too" she pushed my hair back and placed the covers onto my shoulders.

"Now get some sleep. I might still be here by the time you wake up" she squeezed my hand lightly before exiting the room. After her comfort, I managed to fall asleep peacefully.

I sighed tiredly as I sat up and slipped out of my warm bed. I still wanted to sleep but I could hear some loud bassy music playing downstairs. I knew for a fact that Claire didn't listen to teenage music.

I brushed my teeth and washed my face in the bathroom before brushing through the tangled knots in my onyx hair. I applied some lip gloss, changed into a grey oversized t-shirt with matching joggers.

I wore my fluffy bunny shoes then got out of my room. I didn't want to see or talk to Camille after what she had said last night. The music got louder as I descended further down the stairs.

From the top, I saw Camille and another blonde girl, sitting at the table with three other brunette girls. Her boyfriend was also present with two other guys but what shocked me the most was seeing Corey standing by the side of the blonde girl.

I hadn't thought he'd be a part of Camille's snobby, bratty squad and I immediately regretted coming down. My eyes had bags underneath them and I hadn't bothered to put any effort in my dressing.

I was about to run back up the stairs when someone called my name out. I slowly turned to face a smiling Camille. The moment I had been dreading was now flashing before my eyes.

"Aurora, how rude of you to just leave without saying hie" she smirked as Corey's eyes widened. I'm sure he thought I was just a cousin, not a sister.

I remained silent with my arms crossed, my skin prickling as they all looked at me with mixed expressions.

"Are you still mad? Aaww, I'm sorry. You can come and hang out with us" she waved her manicured hand as I slowly raised my eyebrow. Something was fishy and I knew it.

"Yes. The more the merrier" the blonde girl said in a cheery voice.

"Thank you but I have homework to do-"

"No, don't be a buzz kill. Come on, it's just for a few minutes so I can introduce you to my friends" she gestured to the group of people. I exhaled loudly but decided to go down anyway.

"So this is Aurora, she's my new sister" Camille gestured at me as I tried my best to conceal my shock. Since when was she okay with it?

"Hey guys" I waved shyly and they chorused their greetings.

"I'm Jenevive, Camille's best friend" the familiar blonde introduced herself, her blue eyes sparkling with glee.

"I'm Zack, Camille's boyfriend" the tall guy besides her said and I nodded. It was pretty obvious by how touchy they were being but I decided to remain silent.

"I'm Jules and this is Jonah" a blonde guy pointed at the boy beside him, who gave me a friendly wave.

"I'm Isaac"

"I'm Sabrina"

"I'm Jenny"

"I'm Evelyn" the other girls introduced themselves.

"It's lovely to meet you all" I gave them a polite smile.

"Why didn't you introduce yourself?" Camille questioned Corey as he studied me.

"We know each other. I met her at the choir auditions" he replied and she hummed in acknowledgement.

"Why didn't you join us at school? We would have loved to have y-" Jenevive stopped talking when Camille kicked her leg under the table. I knew it was to good to be true.

"Mmm, she already has her own friends, right Aurora?" she gave me a sinister smile. She was indirectly warning me to say yes.

"Um yeah. Anyways, I sadly have to go but, it was lovely having to meet all of you" I clasped my hands together. They said their farewells then I made it my cue to leave.

I made myself a cup of coffee with a cupcake then made my way to the chairs outside. It was my first time sitting here and I regretted not ever doing it earlier. The mountains amd nature in the distance along woth the pool water in front of me brought serene vibes.

"It's a lovely view isn't it?" a deep voice caused me jerk my head way too fast, causing my coffee to spill onto my clothes.

"Oh, my bad. Here" Corey handed me a clean white handkerchief and my cheeks tainted red.

"Thank you" I whispered as he made himself comfortable besides me. He smelt really good too, a mixture of citrusy and fruity scents.

"So, how old are you?" was the first question he asked me after I was done cleaning the stain.

"I'm 16, turning 17 on the 30th of April. What about you?" I sipped my coffee, still gazing at the verdurous nature.

"I turned 18 last week" Corey clasped his large hands together as I faced him.

"Really? Happy belated birthday" I grinned as he let out a chuckle.

"Thanks. How do you like it here so far?" he questioned me, genuinely interested in what I had to say next.

"It's, good. I can't really complain" I shrugged nonchalantly.

"I was expecting a much more enthusiastic response" he admitted honestly as I laughed.

"I just, well, I'm still adjusting to the new environment" my lips pursed and Corey hummed in response.

"I didn't know you hung out with Camille and her friends" I openly stated, wanting to know the relation between them. He seemed to kind and nice to be Camille's friend.

"I know, that's what everyone says" he laighed lightly before continuing "she's a sweet girl. We've known each other since we were 8" his statement made my jaw drop in shock.

"Wow! That's such- such a long time" I let out a breath of disbelief as Corey nodded.

"We're like best friends"
