Chapter 2

LaDonna Kraymer

I had just walked out of the elevator when I saw him standing just inside the front door. I had only started working here two weeks ago and had never noticed this guy. He stood looking around like he wasn’t sure what he should do. He was wet from head to toe and left a very noticeable puddle at his feet as the workers around him pointed and snickered.

I rolled my eyes at the immaturity of them all and proceeded to run my eyes over him. The first thing I noticed was his height, and he was exceptionally tall. However, he didn’t seem to be ashamed of it because he stood with his back straight, not all hunched over like so many taller men I know do.

I like a tall man myself because it’s hard to find one taller than me at five foot nine. Plus, I want to wear high heel shoes, which makes me even more elevated.

I don’t know how long I stood there just looking at him, but eventually, he turned and started walking the hall. That’s when I got a view of his backside. Oh, be still my heart! The man has one fine butt, the kind a woman wants to squeeze, and...

“Oh, please, tell me you aren’t checking out the nerd’s butt, LaDonna,” someone snidely said from behind me.

“It’s so fine, though. Who wouldn’t check it out?” I said as I turned around to see Sandra looking at me with an odd look on her face.

“Are you kidding me? The man is like seven-foot-tall, has no meat on his bones, and is a total nerd,” Sandra said with a laugh.

I wasn’t laughing because it wasn’t funny. “Okay. First, he’s probably only six foot something. Second, you don’t have to be built like the Incredible Hulk to be sexy. Third, what’s wrong with having a little brainpower?” I asked her.

Sandra’s eyes had widened with every word, and her mouth dropped open.

“Well, sooorry! I didn’t mean to offend you. I mean, if nerdy is the kind of man you like, then I say go for it. I don’t think he’s seeing anyone,” Sandra concluded as she turned and stalked off.

All day, I thought about what Sandra had said in between taking calls and typing paperwork for Mr. Donahue, my boss. I wasn’t a naturally shy person, but I’m not outgoing enough to just walk up to the guy and say, ’Hey, wanna go out sometime?’. I mean, I don’t even know who he is.

With a sigh, I looked at the clock and realized it was five-thirty. Putting things away, I grabbed my purse as I stood up. I tapped on Mr. Donahue’s door, and when he looked up, I said, “It’s five-thirty, sir. I’ll be going if you don’t need anything.”

Mr. Donahue nodded, saying, “Fine, have a good evening, LaDonna. I’ll see you in the morning.”

I nodded and backed out of his office. As I started walking down the hall, I began digging for my keys as I muttered, “Where are you? You would think as many keys as I have, they would be easy to find.” Then I ran into something or someone? “Oof!”

“Careful,” a man said as I started to fall.

The man caught me and pulled me up. “Oh, I am so sorry I wasn’t watching...” My voice trailed off as I looked up into the bluest eyes I had ever seen.

“Are you alright, Miss?” Blue eyes asked me in an intense voice.

All I could do was stand staring up at him. It was the man I had seen earlier, and he was even better looking up close than he had been from a distance. Oh, how I wanted to know this beautiful man. Still staring into his eyes, I softly asked, “Go out with me, please?”

“Excuse me?” Blue eyes asked, his eyebrows going up.

I blushed and self-consciously laughed as I ran my hand through my hair. Pushing a few strands behind my ear, I stuttered, “I... I’m sorry. Um—yes, I’m fine.”

Blue eyes cleared his throat, which caused me to glance up at him through my lashes. “My name is Shane Duffy. What would your name be?”

“Oh! You’re Jr?”

Shane frowned. “Yes, that would be me. However, I prefer Shane.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t know who you were, and that’s just what Mr. Donahue calls you. I was expecting someone... um, someone a little...” I stopped and bit my lip.

“Someone a little... what?”

“I thought you were a bit younger.”

“How young exactly?”

“Maybe seventeen or eighteen. You know, since Mr. Donahue calls you Jr,” I whispered, feeling incredibly embarrassed.

“So, you didn’t know I worked here?”

“No, I didn’t,” I replied as I looked back into those beautiful eyes of his. “My name is LaDonna.”

Shane stood there looking at me for a moment. Then he smiled, and I stared at his dimples. “I would love to go out with you.”

“Oh man, just when I thought you couldn’t get any cuter, you flash your dimples,” I told him. Then my brain caught up with my mouth, and I gasped. “I’m sorry, again. I’m not usually like this, I mean, I do tend to say whatever comes to mind, but I’ve never been this… um… I don’t flirt with strangers... not that I was…” I stopped talking and huffed. “Okay, I need to stop talking now.

Shane chuckled, then asked, “How about we get some dinner then? I know a great little Mexican place.”

“That sounds lovely. When?”

Shane cocked an eyebrow. “Now? I mean, I’m hungry now, and it is dinner time. However, I should probably go home first and do something with my hair. My mother would cringe if she saw the way it looks right now.” He ran his hand through it with a grimace

“Please don’t. I think it looks very se... um... lovely.” I felt my face once more heat up. I had been going to say sexy. What is wrong with me? It’s like I have no filter at all around this guy, and I want to get to know him, not send him running.

“So, Mexican is good?” Shane asked as he tapped the elevator button.

“Yes, that sounds wonderful,” I agreed. Now I just need to control my mouth, and it will all be good.

On the way down in the elevator, we decided to take his car. It was a bright shiny red Dodge Charger. Not one of those new ones, but a classic 1972 completely restored one. “Oh, Shane, what a beautiful car you have. Did you restore it yourself?” I ran my hand along the side as I waited for his answer.

“Yes, I did. My father bought it for me when I turned sixteen. By the time I was seventeen and had a license, I had it running and in primer. It was in pretty decent shape for its age, so I didn’t have a lot of bodywork to do, mostly just the engine and interior,” Shane answered as he opened the door for me to get in.

The seats were soft black leather, and it smelled so good inside leather and cologne. I took a deep breath as Shane climbed into the driver’s side and started the car. When we arrived at the restaurant, Shane opened doors for me and even pulled out my chair for me to sit, such a gentleman.

As soon as our waitress left with our orders, Shane folded his hands on the table. Then he focused on me. “So, tell me a little about yourself.”

That was the start of our conversation, and it lasted through the meal and dessert. I found out we had a lot in common, and the more I learned about him, the more I liked him.

We both love to read and would take a good book over TV any day. Although, I am a big CSI fan and never miss an episode. Shane, on the other hand, is a big fan of Criminal Minds and never forgets it. So, we did have a little debate on which one was better, but it was all in good fun, and we had a good laugh.

“Well, well, what have we here?”

I heard from next to me and looked up only to frown as I asked, “Hello, John. What brings you here?”

“Same as you, I would imagine, dinner,” John answered. “However, I didn’t have company and ate alone. Are you going to introduce me?”

“I suppose,” I reluctantly answered. “John, this is Shane, Shane, my brother, John.”

The frown on Shane’s face left after the introduction, and he gave a slight smile as he shook John’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you, John.”

John nodded at Shane, then he turned back to me, asking, “Why have you never mentioned this guy? I didn’t know you were dating.”

I frowned at him. “Seriously, John, you’re my brother, not my father. You don’t have to know every detail of my life. I don’t poke my nose in your affairs, so stay out of mine.” I knew my face was red, and I felt like I would have steam coming out my ears at any minute.

I saw Shane glanced at me with a puzzled look, but I ignored it. I didn’t want to explain the love-hate relationship I had going on with my brother right now.

Clearing his throat and drawing John’s attention, he said. “LaDonna, it’s getting late, and we both work tomorrow. Perhaps we should go?”

I nodded.

Shane stood and pulled out my chair for me. Then he helped me into my jacket.

I picked up my purse, glancing over at my brother with a sigh. I don’t know why he rubs me wrong so quickly, but he is my brother, and I love him. So, I pulled him into a hug as I said, “Later, brother.

Shane took my arm then, and we quickly left the restaurant.
