We Need to Talk

I was honestly more surprised to wake up, than I was to find myself lying in the middle of a field.

It took me a few moments but eventually I realised that something was wrong. I felt strange but I wasn’t in any pain, and when I looked around there, was, nothing. In all directions all I saw was a vast field.

Slowly I climbed to my feet and looked around and that’s when I saw the dark shape coming towards me. Not rushing, not threatening, just casually strolling.

As it got closer, I recognised it as a person, and as they got even closer, I recognised him as someone who looked like my dad, but different.

“Not Quite.”

The man smiled and a weird feeling washed over me. His face was so familiar but it had a kindness that I hadn’t seen on those features before. Then it hit me.

“Uncle Edward?”

He pointed a finger at me and winked.

“Oh… shit.’ I looked again at the vast nothing I was standing in, and sighed. ’I’m not as alive as I think I am, am I?”

He let out a little chuckle that somehow made me feel at ease.

“No, but you’re not as dead as you might think either.”

He spread out his arms to gesture at everything, then sat down on a log that wasn’t there until he sat on it.

“Welcome to limbo. We need to talk.”

I sat down on my own spontaneous log and warmed my hands on the sudden camp fire. I didn't want to think about the truth of my situation. But at the same time, I couldn’t really escape it either.

“So, my dad really did kill me. That’s…’ I let out another long sigh. ’That’s… a new level of parenting from him.”

I sat in that feeling and let time pass, and bless my uncle, he just stayed quiet and let me get my head around it before saying.

“Not exactly. But not for lack of trying. I’m sorry, for what it’s worth.”

I looked up and remembered something suddenly and actually blushed.

“Yeah, me too. I’m really sorry we killed you.”

He waved a hand at me like it was no big deal and smiled.

“Also, what do you mean I’m not quite dead?”

His smile faded and was replaced by a concerned grimace.

“Yeah, about that. I have some good news and some bad news.”

“You mean, there's more bad news, other than I’m… mostly dead?”

I could see him thinking for a second.

“Alright, then let’s have some of that good news.”

“Well, you can’t actually die. You’re here because your body is so damaged that you should be dead, but you’re not. You are healing, slowly, and when your body is ready your soul will return to it.”

I stared at him for a moment and found new memories popping up in my head.

“Soul mates can’t die. As long as one remains the other will endure?”

“That’s right, you connected with your soul mate, and as long as they are alive, you can’t die.”

I thought about Amber and a rush of warm filled me. It was real nice to get that kind of confirmation, even if it was under such crazy and demented circumstances.

“What’s the bad news?”

Any sign of a smile vanished from Edwards’ face and as he scowled, he looked so much like my dad that it was a bit disturbing.

“Your father also knows that.”

“You’re a vampire!”

“Would you keep your voice down please?”

Frankie looked more shocked at my yelling, than I was at finding out vampires were real. Which seemed really unfair given the circumstances.

“Don’t tell me to be quiet, you disappear for days, have all of us convinced you’re dead and now you just arrive and drop a bomb like that and expect me to be calm! Like what the fuck?”

“You’ll wake your parents.”

“They’re not here!”

Which reminded me that I was home, alone, with a vampire. All my outrage and courage vanished, and suddenly I found it a little hard to breathe.

I could feel the blood drain from my face, which also made me very aware of my blood.

“Wh… what do you want with me Frankie?”

I could see his jaw tightening and a cold look came over his face, as if he was holding himself back. Then suddenly he got to his feet and stalked away from me angrily.

“What a shitty question Amber. I mean, we’ve been together forever, you’re the one running around and… I’m the one who’s being looked at as a monster?”

He turned and his eyes were almost luminous red.

“I didn’t ask for this, this just happened. Do I get no points for coming to you first? Even though you’ve been really shitty to me lately! Fuck, Amber… you’re supposed to be my girlfriend.”

He had a point, and, suddenly I couldn’t even look at him. Because I was supposed to be his girlfriend and he had done nothing wrong, actually.

“Frankie… I’m, I’m sorry. But you’ve got to admit it’s very weird what’s going on. I… I can’t explain any of it, I, I just don’t feel like myself anymore. The world doesn’t feel like the world anymore. And, babe, you’re a vampire.”

He looked up at the window and I think he was trying to find his own reflection but it wasn’t there, so he looked at me.

“Yeah, well, you and me both. Look Amber, if I ask you to trust me, and promise you that nothing is going to happen. Will you come with me?”

When he turned, he looked like himself again. Maybe even a little younger. He looked scared and confused and so familiar that I couldn’t say no.

“Of course.”

He smiled, offered me his hand and led me out of the house to the weirdest looking blackest car I’d ever seen. It was so dark that it almost stood out against the night for being so dark.

The inside wasn’t much better and it took me a second to realise that Frankie and I both got into the back seat. As soon as the doors closed the car started driving.

“Where are you taking me?”

“Somewhere safe.”

“Safe? Frankie what’s going on?”

“I’ll explain when we get there.”
