The choice

I started to shiver behind Adam's back so he pulled me against his chest. I burried my nose in his chest and he embraced me tight to him to the point it was almost hurting. I would let him embrace me as tight as he wanted if it allowed him to find some peace of mind.

"You should go put something else on." He whispered.

"Are we going out?" I asked.

"Yes. I will be taking on the title tonight. My mother can no longer rule like this so she will be handing me the reins tonight." He said.

"How does it go?" I asked.

"You'll see. It's not much so don't worry." He said with a smile.

"All right." I said lifting my gaze to meet his eyes.

I could still see the pain of seeing his mom like this but he seemed also a bit better. I went on tiptoes and kissed his lips softly before parting from him to go back to our bedroom.

I did not know what to wear to such an event. Funny, since it was supposed to be my job. Maybe I should try something formal but not too much. Shifters did not like formality much in the clothes and preferred their fur anyway.

I chose a dress that I wore for a gala that we organised once. It was a silver bustier dress that flared after my waist and fell under my knees. I had the heels that matched the dress and I tied my hair in a bun. That would do for this kind of event I hoped.

I turned around to see that Adam was eyeing me with hunger in his eyes. Did I look that good? It was hard to say.

"You're gorgeous." He said as he wrapped his arm around my waist.

"Thanks." I said with a smile. "I hope that it's all right."

"Of course it is. I like that you didn't hide my mark. That will show the other tigers that we're ready to lead together."

"It seemed like the right thing to do. I'm proud to wear it."

"I'm so happy you chose me, you have no idea." He said.

I turned around to face him and I could see the love in his eyes. It made my smile widen. How could I not? Who would not want to spend the rest of their life with their best friend? That was what he had always been to me.

"We took our time but here we are." I said. "I love you and I know that we're going to get through everything together."

"Sure." He smiled. "But first..."

He took something out of his pocket before falling on one knee. Was it what I thought it was? Was he going to...

"Melanie Louise Margaux Renard, would you like to do me the honour of being my wife?" He said with a huge smile on his face.

I looked stunned for a second. First, I hated to hear my full name and he knew it. He promised never to use it and to always call me Mia. I suppose that asking me to marry him did not count. Second, I was frozen. I never thought that I would see the day when Adam would ask me to be his wife. He was handing me a ring that was white gold with a huge diamond in the middle surrounded by moonstones. It was beautiful.

"I know you don't like to hear your name but I need an answer here." He said amused.

"Yes. Of course, yes!" I said shaking off the feeling of astonishment. "I'm your mate so what do you think."

He stood back up and put the ring on my finger before pulling me in for a kiss. It was a sweet, loving kiss and I could feel the happiness fill our bond on both side.

This was just like Adam to not even wait before he asked me to be his wife. We just marked each other and he did not want to wait anymore. I was happy for once that he did not like to beat around the bush. I could understand that he had waited enough for me to be ready to love him but he could have spared us a lot of trouble by beating Jackson to it.

I remembered how nervous I was the first time we met for my job interview. He was so impressive by his size but also the presence he had. Everyone usually turned their gaze to Adam when he walked into a room, he had that power. Then his beauty made me even more anxious. I felt small and like a potato in front of him.

Look at us now.

"You were that impressed by me when we met?" He asked amused.

"Oh yes." I said. "You were just this big hunk that I always dreamt of and you were going to maybe be my boss. I was scared that you would find me... Dull."

"I would never think that. I fell in love the moment I opened the door to the office." He said with a loving smile.

I could see that it was the truth. He brought me back to this day in his mind and I felt the moment he landed his eyes on me that he thought that I was it. I was his mate, the one that would share his life forever. He needed to be careful though because I was human and I would think that he was a stalker if he just declared undying love to me right away. He would take his time but he would make me his. He just had to. He liked my profile when he read my resumee but meeting me just confirmed everything.

"So you had an interest in me even before meeting me?" I teased.

"Yes. I felt like a moron but sometimes it just happens. You read about someone and you think, could it be? Could this person be my one? I was happy when I met you that it just confirmed that you were my mate." He explained. "Of course, when I talked about it with Ismael, he told me that he felt it too. That's when I understood that it would be hard to make you mine but I was not ready to give up just yet. Even after you told me that you were dating Jackson. I just never could give up."

"I'm glad you didn't." I said embracing him tight. "I always hoped that we would be more than friends one day and I'm so glad that it finally happened. I couldn't dream of a better person to share my whole life with. You know how to choose your moment too."

"I wanted to propose the other night at the bar but... Jackson ruined it and then I thought that I could propose in the woods but my mom ruined this time... I didn't want to miss my chance anymore." He said.

"It's perfect." I beamed at him.

"Good." He said smiling lovingly. "I'll change too or they will all say that I don't deserve you."

"They could say all they want but I'd still want to marry you."

I kissed him on the cheek before parting with him to let him dress. He could dress like a punk and I would still love him. I could care less about what people thought of our couple. We were right for each other and that was all that mattered to me. He was my mate and I was his. Simple as that.

He put on a navy suit with a white dress shirt and dark brown shoes. He looked stunning and I could not help wanting a bite. My tigress agreed wholeheartedly, our mate was really fine.

He combed his messy hair and finally managed to tame them. Well, they would stay put for the evening but I was not sure that it would last longer.

He held out his arm to me once he was done and I took it.

"Are you ready?" He asked his green eyes focused on me.

"Yes. I'm ready when you are."

"Let's go then."

I did not know where we were going exactly but one thing I knew for sure, I would follow him to Hell and back if he asked me to.
