Letting Him Go

Chapter 2

Present day…

It had been a crazy week. I had cried so much that I was pretty sure I didn’t have any tears left. I had skipped Mr. Eastman’s class all week not wanting to face him. I was not going to let him know how much he had hurt me. I had Nick and he was all I needed. Why wallow in something that I could not change? He was married and I was no home wrecker. Mate or not. To top all that, my parents had informed me that we were having guests for dinner. Apparently, the Alpha of the neighboring pack had done a favor for my dad and taken a teaching position until they could find someone else to teach the class. So to thank him, my parents had invited him and his wife over for dinner.

My heart had dropped. I knew it was going to be the Eastman’s. I wasn’t sure how to deal with the fact that I was going to have to see him with his wife. From what my mom had told me, he was a young Alpha and he had been married for a few years. She said that there was talk that his wife was very nice. She was human but that the pack loved her.

“Mom, can I just sit this dinner out?” I asked hopefully.

“Alli that would be rude,” she said frowning.

“Mom please I can’t do this,” I begged with tears streaming down my face.

“Why are you so upset about dinner guests, honey?” my mom asked becoming concerned.

“He’s my mate mom,” I confessed.

“What!” she yelled.

“How do I sit there and watch him with his wife knowing that he’s mine?” I questioned anxiously.

“Has he said anything to you?” she said running her fingers through my hair.

“No, I’ve been avoiding him; I bet he doesn’t even know that I’m that Alpha’s daughter. It doesn’t matter anyway, mom, he is married and I’m with Nick. I wish it didn’t bother me so much mom.” I replied trying to calm myself.

“Honey I’m so sorry I wish you would have told me sooner, does Nick know?” she asked softly.

“Yes, and I’m so glad that I have him to get me through this. Please don’t tell dad. I know that it will just make him worry. I’m going to be OK,” I said smiling at her.

“Fine, but call Nick and tell him to be here for diner, you’re going to need him.” she said reassuringly.

I was so nervous. My heart was beating so fast that I was sure it was going to explode any minute.

“Calm down babe I’m here for you.” Nick said pulling me into his arms.

I couldn’t deny that I loved him. He was so sweet and caring. He was willing to stand by me even though there was a chance that I could still leave him for my mate. “What did I ever do to deserve you?” I asked touching my lips to his.

“Alli, Nick, come down here before the Eastman’s get here.” my mom yelled from downstairs.

“Baby, look at me,” Nick said holding my face in his hands.

“Whatever you do, don’t let him see that he’s hurting you. I don’t know what his deal is but just act like he doesn’t matter.” he said growling.

“Just remember that I love you and I’m here for you. Baby you got this. You are beautiful and smart and so many other things. If he can’t see all that then it’s his loss.”

It seemed like forever until the doorbell finally rang. Nick got up and wrapped his arms around my waist. I couldn’t help but lean back against his chest. As crazy as it sounded, I belonged here in his arms. It felt so right. He made me feel so safe and loved. I was going to do my best to pretend that my mate wasn’t hurting me. I had Nick and I did truly love him. As far as I was concerned, Nick was my mate. When they walked in my heart stopped, he had his arm around her shoulder and she was clinging to him.

“Just breathe baby.” Nick whispered in my ear.

Mr. Eastman’s head snapped up to look at me and I could see anger in his eyes. What the hell was his problem! I thought to myself.

“Matthew this is my mate, Anna, and my daughter, Alli.” my dad said introducing us.

“Oh and let’s not forget Alli’s long-time boyfriend, Nick.” my mom said smirking.

“Mr. Eastman.” I politely replied looking up at him.

“Alli. This is my wife Mandy,” he answered with a soft voice and a sad look on his face to match.

“Ummm…nice to meet you,” I said looking away quickly. His wife extended her hand to me and I took it smiling at her.

“I’m Mandy.” She said smiling.

She seemed so sweet I knew then and there that there was no way I would break her and Mr. Eastman up.

“Let’s go in to the dining room,” my mom said leading the way.

She was the Alpha’s daughter. My mate was an Alpha, I thought to myself. I was trying not go over there and rip her out of the boy’s arms. Mandy looked up at me and I felt myself get sick. How could did I get myself in this situation? Here was Mandy who I loved. Always have. And then there was my mate who it seems I love more. Anna sat Alli and Nick across from Mandy and me. I was struggling to keep my eyes off her.

“So Alli I’ve missed you the last few days in class,” I commented.

“Oh that’s my fault,” Anna said before Alli could respond. “I needed her and Nick for a few things here at the house,” she said quickly. I hated knowing that she was always with that boy.

“So Matthew how are you taking to teaching again?” Alpha Mark inquired.

“I forgot how much I loved to teach I’m glad that I got the chance to go it again.” I answered honestly.

“Maybe you will think about staying on,” Mark said smiling.

“That would be great!” Mandy said smiling. “He’s always loved to teach but with the pack he’s always so busy. So Alli is Nick your mate?” Mandy asked smiling.

I about spit the water I had in my mouth out. “No.” Alli responded, not meeting my eyes.

“Have you already met your mate?” Mandy inquired.

“Erm,” was Alli’s only reply.

“No, she hasn’t.” Anna said frowning at my wife.

“She loves Nick and I couldn’t think of a better person to be my daughter’s mate,” Anna said glaring at me.

She knew about Alli being my mate I thought swallowing the lump in my throat.

“What if you meet your true mate?” Mandy continued. “I’m sure I never will but if I did it would not matter. As far as I’m concerned, Nick is my mate,” she said looking over at me.

I sat through dinner and tried to ignore the hurt that I felt. “I have some Alpha things to discuss with you Matthew, if can you stay for a little longer?” requested my dad.

“I’m really tired,” Mandy told Matthew.

“Nick could you give Mandy a ride home?” Matthew asked smirking.

“Yes, please I would appreciate it.” Mandy said smiling.

“Um mm, love, do you mind?” Nick posed to me thoughtfully.

“No, I don’t mind” I said looking up at him.

“Do you want me to come back?” he asked kissing my fore head.

“No, it’s ok. I’ll just see you at school tomorrow.” I said. I was glad to see Mandy go. I know it was horrible of me to think that way, but I couldn’t help it. She was perfect. She was beautiful and nice. It was no wonder my mate married her.

“Well if you will excuse me I have homework to do.” Mr. Eastman looked up at me and smiled a sad smile before he and dad headed for the office. I felt burned out. I had been up in my room for an hour working on a paper and I needed a break. I walked outside to sit on the swing taking in the night air.

“Can we talk?” I jerked my head up to see Mr. Eastman smiling at me.

“We have nothing to talk about Mr. Eastman.” I replied sternly.

“I think we do.” he said pulling me to him.

“Let me go.” I said hitting his chest with my fists.

“Please call me Matthew.” he said softly.

“No thank you. You are nothing more than my teacher and I doubt you let your other students call you Matthew.” I smirked.

“Well, we both know that you’re more to me than just another student.” he said returning my smirk.

“Why are you doing this?” I whispered tears forming in my eyes.

“You’re my mate.” he answered, taking in my scent.

“You’re married. We can never be anything to each other.” I saw the sadness in his eyes at my response.

“Your mine Alli!” he forcefully declared.

“No, I’m Nick’s” I said smirking. His eyes started glowing and I could tell that his wolf was close to taking over.

“Does he make you feel what I make you feel?” he asked smugly.

“Do you want your wife as bad as you want me?” I snapped back pushing him away.

“We have nothing to say to each other.” I said walking to the door. He grabbed my arm gently and pulled me into his arms.

“Alli, please don’t walk away from me.” he begged.

“What do you want from me? What do you expect me to do be your girl on the side, is that what you want! You would reduce me, your mate into being your mistress!” I yelled.

“It wouldn’t be like that,” he defended.

“Then tell me what would it be like? Do you know what they call side chicks, which would be exactly what I would be? Let me fill you in case you don’t. Homewrecker, slut, whore to name a few. Are you willing to give me my place? Are you going to divorce your wife?” I asked my body shaking with anger.

“You know what Mr. Eastman, forget I even said that. Your married end of conversation. Do you love her?” I asked not wanting to know the answer.

“Yes,” he whispered. I felt my heartbreak but I loved someone else too. We were just mates that were doomed from the start. I took a deep breath preparing myself for what I was about to do.

“Matthew Eastman I reject you as my mate!” I vehemently announced. He fell to the floor clutching his heart. I wanted to reach out to him but I had made my choice. “What are you waiting for? Say the words and let’s be done with this.” I indifferently declared.

“No!” he said anger in his voice.

She rejected me as her mate and I lost it. She was mine I would never let her go. “I will never say the words that will set you free!” I said slamming my lips to hers. I was on fire and I knew in that moment that I was lost. She broke the kiss and slapped me.

“You are beyond low! You would make me suffer watching you with her when you could let me go and let me be happy with someone else.” she proclaimed. I knew that what she was saying was true but my wolf wouldn’t let her go. I just couldn’t.

“I’m sorry.” I said not meeting her eyes. I really was sorry but she was my mate, the other part of my soul. And right here and now all that mattered to me was my mate.

“I want nothing to do with you. Please, just let me go.” she whispered. “Why do you have to make things harder than they have to be for me.” She said looking distraught. My heart broke because I knew that I had hurt her by making someone else my mate. I had lost her before I even had her.

“I’m so sorry,” I said again, “but I won’t let you go ever.”

I wished that things were different. I wished with all my heart that I had met her first.

My heart hurt seeing Alli so sad. Her mate was married to someone else. She told me what had happened the night of the dinner and I had been filled with rage. I decided that it was time for me to have a talk with Mr. Eastman. I pulled up to his house and tried to calm myself before I got myself killed, because who was I kidding, he was an Alpha. I knew he could kill me without much effort, but at the moment I didn’t care. I knocked on his door and was surprised when he answered.

“What are you doing here?” he growled.

“I came because I want you to reject Alli as your mate.” I stated.

“Who are you to make demands of me?” he said growling.

“I’m her future husband that’s who!” I yelled.

“What makes you think that I would ever let you marry her?” he bellowed.

“What makes you think that you can stop us?” I said my body shaking with rage.

“What is going on here?” Mandy said walking up behind us.

“Yes tell your wife what’s going on.” I said glaring at him.

I was at a loss for words. How do you tell someone you love that you found your mate she would know what that means and how strong the mate bond was? I knew that this was going to hurt her but there was nothing I could do now to keep her out of the loop.

“Mandy, I didn’t want for you to find out like this.” I said taking a breath, “Alli’s my mate.” The look on her face was something that I would never forget. I had hurt her and I would never forgive myself for it.

“How could you keep something like this from me?!” she exclaimed with tears in her eyes. “I take it that’s what the two of you are arguing about?” She said frowning.

“I came here to ask that Matthew give Alli her freedom and reject her. She has already rejected him. She wants nothing to do with him. She’s going to respect that you two are married. This is difficult for her, but Matthew is making it harder by not letting her go.” Nick explained frowning.

“I see.” Mandy whispered. She turned to me and I knew that everything was about to fall apart. “Do you want to be with her?”

What was I supposed say? What was I supposed to do? “You have to understand what it is to find a mate Mandy. I love you and I have for many years. I choose you. But, I love her too it’s not something that I have control over. My wolf wants her. I won’t sit here and lie to you. I just want to rip this boy’s head off for ever touching her,” I said trying to rationalize what was happening.

She gasped and put her hand to her heart. “I can’t reject her. My wolf won’t allow it. I’m sorry if that hurts you. All I can do is do my best to stay away from her.” I conceded in an effort to comfort her.

Mandy nodded and walked out of the room. I knew that both Alli and Mandy were hurting right now and it hurt me to know that it was because of my selfish actions.

“I’m not letting her go ever.” I growled at Nick.

“You gave up your right to her when you married Mandy. You won’t stop us from being together. Did you forget that she is the daughter of an Alpha? Do you really think that her father will let you treat her this way?” Nick said glaring at me.

“She’s mine and I will go to war with anyone who tries to keep her from me including her father!” I yelled.

I knew that I was being unfair to Alli and Mandy but my wolf didn’t care. He wanted Alli. My eye caught the doorway to see Mandy glaring at me. I thought she had left the room but instead she heard everything I just said to Nick.

“You’ve lost your mind!” Mandy yelled, “do you really expect for me to just sit here and play wife while you run after someone else? I truly can’t understand how you can treat me this way?”She sobbed.

What was I going to do? I was going crazy. I could not afford to show weakness. I was the Alpha of my pack for crying out loud. I had to do something and fast.

Matthew had called and said that he needed to talk to me about something important. My mind was racing trying to figure out what it could be that was going on.

“Mark, Matthew’s here.” Anna notified me, “He’s waiting in your office.”she said heading back the kitchen.

“I called this meeting with you Mark because I need a favor from you.” he apprised me.

“What is it you need son?” I asked.

“I need you to send Alli and Nick away to some private school as far from here as possible.” he requested.

“What! Why would you want me to send my daughter away?” was my surprised response.

“Because she’s my mate. I can’t leave my wife. I made vows to her and she’s innocent in all this. But I can’t let Alli go either. I know that I’m being selfish. Mark, I never intended to hurt your daughter. I just can’t leave my wife. What kind of man would that make me? My wolf hates to see that boy near her. I can’t control myself I’m going to end up killing him! She would never forgive me if that happened.” He exclaimed.

“Why not reject her?” I asked, trying to remain calm.

“I can’t Mark! I don’t want to let her go, the thought of losing her makes me physically ill. The only thing I can think of is for her to go far away from me with that boy. As hard as this is for me to say, I want her to be happy, but I won’t be able to control myself if she’s close,” he explained.

“I know it takes a lot for you to be able to give up your true mate. I know that my daughter must be hurting just as bad.” I said running my hand threw my hair.

“I love my wife Mark; I just happen to love your daughter more. What I feel for Alli is so intense so overwhelming I find it harder and harder to stay away from her. I just could not live with myself if I left Mandy.” he said sadly.

“I won’t be able to keep her away forever but I can push for her to mate with Nick. He’s good for her Matthew he will take care of her,” I offered.

“Thank you Alpha. I will of course be taking care of all the expenses for Alli and the boy and whatever staff you choose to send with her.” Matthew said tears in his eyes as he got up and left.

I admired the man. He could have dropped his wife and no one in his pack would have batted an eyelash. My daughter was his mate, but can I say that she would not feel awful about breaking up a marriage. He was doing the right thing for both of them. I just hoped that I could make Alli understand that.
