|my beloved, my mate|
"Lila?" My mum’s voice rang out in my head, bringing me around.
A wet snout nudged my arm. I flickered my eyes open and came face to face with my mum’s wolf. I smiled weakly, pulling myself up. I rubbed my eyes before looking around.
"Are you ok?" She asked through the link. I nodded, sighing.
I’m not sure exactly what happened, but what I do know... He didn’t want to reject me. If he did, he would have done it no matter what. If he meant what he said, I’d be dead right now. There’s no way I could have fought them off with me feeling like I did.
"You’re going to need to shift, baby. There’s a lot of vampires here." She mentioned.
“Have you seen Alarix?” I asked nervously.
She shook her head. I sucked in a breath before I started taking my clothes off to shift. I shifted then shook my fur out. It felt good to be in my wolf form.
“Lila, Alarix has been spotted in the forest behind the house,” Elias proclaimed as he ran into the room.
I turned and trotted over to him. “I can make you invisible for about five minutes. It will give you enough time to get out of the house and into the forest. I’ve done the same for Levi and a few warriors.” He explained, running his fingers through my fur.
I rubbed my head against his leg as he pushed his hand through my fur on my head. He began chanting in a different language. A strange sensation spread throughout my body which quickly disappeared as quick as it appeared.
“There... Quick before it wears off.” He patted my head gently before stepping away.
I dashed out of the basement. I entered a kitchen and choked at the smell of blood. I didn’t stop to look at my surroundings; I didn’t want to see the carnage. I didn’t want to see all blood and death. I headed out the back door and leapt over the wall.
I rushed into the forest, following the scents. I needed to know one way or another what was going on. I could hear arguing in the distance. I pushed myself further and skidded to a stop when I reached them.
Alarix was pacing back and forth. The blonde girl was crying behind his parents. His parents were angry; I could practically see the steam coming from their ears.
“You should have just rejected her or killed her. We wouldn’t be in this situation.” His dad hissed.
“Yes, well, what you want, and I want are two different things.” He rolled his eyes.
“Alarix, you are supposed to be mine...” The blonde woman whined.
I growled and snapped my jaw. They all looked around, confused. “There’s a wolf somewhere.” His mum fretted, hiding behind his dad.
"We’re here, Lil. Eli masked all of our scents, including yours." Levi comforted through the link.
I could have a little fun until the spell wears off. I giggled to myself as I rushed forwards. I nudged the woman’s legs causing her to stumble backwards. I did the same to his parents before jumping at Alarix, knocking him to the floor.
I pushed my paws onto his shoulders, holding him down onto the ground. He thrashed around under me, his eyes were wide, and he looked confused.
I nuzzled my nose into his neck and inhaled. He still smelled like her. I growled lowly and rubbed my fur against him, covering him with my scent.
He sucked in a breath as I inhaled again with my snout against his neck. I raised my head and looked at him. “Lila?” He whispered.
I guess I’m no longer invisible.
“You.” I heard a hiss behind me.
I spun around and growled. “He’s mine.” The woman growled before lunging at me.
As quick as a flash, Alarix pushed me behind him, growling. “Don’t,” he hissed. “You have five seconds to leave; otherwise, I won’t be responsible for my actions.” He barked.
“You were going to reject her. What are you doing?” His dad hissed.
I stepped next to him, pressing my body against his leg. He placed his hand on the side of my head and brushed his fingers through my fur. Having his hands on me felt amazing.
“I wasn’t going to reject her... I was doing what I needed to do to delay the inevitable. I knew her pack and my siblings would be arriving anytime after Lila came. I didn’t expect Lenora to be in my bed; that could have ruined everything.” He hissed, glancing at the blonde woman.
“Alarix, don’t you dare go against me!” His father boomed. “I won’t hesitate to take your head off before putting down your mutt.” He hissed.
I stood in front of Alarix and snarled. His father ran at us only to be blasted back before he could reach us.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” Elias quipped as he stepped out of the tree line with Levi next to him in his human form.
Alarix’s dad pulled himself up and turned around. “What are you, boy? You’re not a wolf.” He questioned, raising his brow.
“I’m one of the prophets.” Elias chuckled. “We’ve come for the last one to unite our group.” He smirked.
I glanced up at Alarix. He was already looking at me; there was so much awe and love swirling around in his eyes. I don’t know why I ever doubted him... I was instantly filled with love and strength.
“You have two options here... You can come with us quietly, or we’ll have to use force.” Levi declared.
I gestured my head at Alarix to follow me and made my way over to Levi and Elias. I stopped next to Levi, making sure I was still close to Alarix.
“And how do you expect to force us? Yes, there’s four of you and three of us... But we are faster.” Alarix’s dad chuckled.
Wolves emerged from the trees along with vampires with their eyes glowing red. “They aren’t alone. I told you that the prophecy needs to happen.” Darius appeared beside me and handed me a bag.
“Shift.” My dad ordered as he appeared next to Darius. He was angry with me; I could see it in his eyes. I was in for a telling off when we returned home.
“Nothing you say or do will stop this prophecy from playing out. Your son is destined for Lila. When the time comes, I hope you will still be around to see your son as the king of all species.” Darius commented as I went behind a bush.
King of all species? Is there more to this damn prophecy? I shifted and quickly pulled on the dress that was in the bag. I looked down at myself and frowned. The dress was royal blue with a diamond-encrusted bust. It stopped just above my knees. It’s not exactly what I would have chosen, especially in this situation.
I stepped back next to Alarix and glanced at him. He smiled brightly at me as he moved my hair from my face and curled it behind my ear. I took a deep breath and smiled back before moving forward and standing a foot away from Alarix’s dad.
“I may be a little wolfie but don’t for one second think I’m not big enough or strong enough to take you on. Maybe you don’t actually know much about our kind, or maybe you’re threatened by us... Because if there’s one thing we aren’t is weak.” I growled.
“He was supposed to be mine.” Lenora, the blonde, yelled as she lunged at me.
Alarix’s parents both shouted, “don’t!” As I grabbed her by her throat and pinned her to the floor.
“Better look next time,” I growled, squeezing her throat.
“Please... Don’t... Kill me.” She spluttered, trying to pry my hands from her throat.
“Oh... I won’t.” I smiled down at her. I released my hand as one of the king’s soldiers picked her up from the floor as she gasped for breath.
I’ve never killed someone before, and I don’t plan on ever doing it if I can help it. Most of the rogues we encounter on missions get subdued and taken to the wolf council, so I’ve never had to take someone’s life.
“As much as I’ve enjoyed this meeting, I’m gonna leave.” I rolled my eyes as his parents hissed. I turned around... Athan and Celeste were stood behind Alarix. I smiled at them before looking at Alarix.
“I’m so sorry for-” He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly as I rushed towards him and flung my arms around his neck.
I saw everyone disappear into the forest. Levi and Elias were making kissy faces at me as they backed away. I chuckled before burying my face into his neck.
“Lila?” He pulled away and looked down at me with his hand on my face.
“I’m sorry I doubted you, back in your bedroom,” I whispered.
He wrapped his arms around my back and pulled me flush into his chest. “I don’t care that you’re a wolf... I want you and your wolf.” He breathed.
I took a deep breath and breathed out shakily. He leaned his head forward, his lips inching closer and closer. His eyes were darting between my eyes and my lips.
“Can I... Can I kiss you?” He asked nervously.
I nodded and held my breath. I was excited and nervous. My stomach was bubbling with anticipation. He leaned forward, closing the distance between us, planting his lips softly against mine.
Our lips were moving slowly in sync. My heart felt like it was in my throat. This was way better than I could have ever imagined.
"My beloved." He breathed as he rested his forehead against mine.
"My mate," I giggled breathlessly.
