“I need your help, Rose.”
“Why me? There are so many other people who could help Xavier.” I responded with a sigh.
“You were the only one who was able to bring him out of his shell after what happened to Emily.”
“Uh...well...what about my job? My hospital? My orphanage? They may be small, but they are big parts of my life! I can’t just throw my life’s work away!” I cried out.
“They will all be taken care of until you get back. I promise. Please, help me save my son. I have no one else. You’re my last hope, Rose.”
I saw tears building up in his eyes as he finished his sentence. I guess, for my old friend, I have to do this.
“Okay. I’ll do this, but only because he’s a friend. And because I know that this is important.”
“Thank you so much! You don’t know how much this means to me!” He grinned from one cheek to the other.
I regretted the words once I spoke them, but I knew they were all true. I guess I should pack my bags. New York, here I come! This is going to be quite the trip.
Wait. You guys must be confused. Let me take you back to the beginning. The story begins in a high school in a small town, Beechwood, Mississippi.
“Hey, Rose! Stop! I thought we were going to go to school together!” Holly, my best friend, called behind me, trying to catch up.
I slowed down to a walk and waited for her.
“I wish we didn’t have to go to school. But you seem excited to start 11th grade. That’s weird.”
“Well, sort of. I’m more excited to see the cute boys at school. Summer vacay was boring without you and Aalia. I wish my parents would have let me stay at your house.”
“Yeah, Aalia and I missed you so much! By the way, Aalia told me to tell you that she’ll meet us in the parking lot at school with Chase. Ever since they started dating, it’s like we both don’t matter.” I pouted.
We both started laughing together at my ugly expression. Let’s just say I could never fake anything. Like, ever.
“And that is why you aren’t a good actress. All jokes aside, I can’t wait to see her again! And to tell Chase that he better not break her heart!”
I grinned at her glare.
“You realize you're just as scary as a puppy, right?”
“Hey!” She suddenly stopped, realizing we reached school. “Never mind, I’ll yell at you later when we aren’t surrounded by sweaty teenagers who like to stare at anything with a butt.”
“You realize that all the ‘sweaty teenagers who like to stare at anything with a butt’ heard you, right? And that they are glaring at you?” I knew what was coming next. Wait for it. 1. 2. Aaaand 3.
“Oy. Idiots. Mind your own business. The next time I catch any of you staring at me, you’ll be goners. Is. That. Understood?”
She was yelling so loudly that I doubt she noticed that the teachers were coming.
“Holly, you might want to stop. Teacher alert.” I whispered in her ear.
“Thanks. That was a close one. Another detention and my parents would have killed me.”
“Your welcome. Anyway, I can see Aalia waiting near that black SUV. Come on. Last one there is a rotten tomato!”
I ran as fast as I could towards the car without care when I crashed into something hard. It felt like...a boy. Oops.
“Oh...um, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I was just racing my friend.” I backed up as I spoke, pushing my dark brown hair out of my eyes.
When I saw the person in front of me, I was awestruck. Brown hair, green eyes, chiseled face. I think I have a crush. No Rose. No crushing on the new boy. You know better than that. You have to focus on your dream.
“Eh. I don’t care. Just don’t do it again. I have better things to do than to crash into an idiot every two seconds.”
As soon as it came, the crush was gone. That rude snickerdoodle smoothie. He’s gonna regret saying that.
“Excuse me! You realize that I didn’t want to crash into you, right? It was an accident. You know ‘an unfortunate incident that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in damage or injury?’ That’s the dictionary definition dumbhead. You know, just in case you didn’t understand. After all, your head is too full of hot air to have a brain residing inside.”
“What did you just say to me? You know what, a tiny tot like you doesn’t deserve my time. Goodbye. Have a horrid day.”
I was fuming. I wanted to yell at him, but all that would do is get me in trouble with the teachers. I’m just going to ignore him. He won’t be able to do much to me other than to annoy me, like an itch that you can’t quite reach. I’m just going to talk to Aalia, Chase, and Holly and have a great first day. Yeah. A great first day.
"Rosie Posie, we're over here! Come on slow-poke, I thought you were going to beat me to the car." Holly yelled out.
"Yeah Holls, sorry. I just crashed into the worst, crazy, fudgesickle."
"Fudgesickle. Really? You really couldn't think of any other word?"
"You know I don't swear Holls. Anyway, did you talk to Aalia yet?"
"Nope. I was waiting for you."
"Then what are we waiting for? Let's go."
When we finally got to Aalia and Chase. The first thing Holly did was start to yell at Chase. Well, that was expected. For fifteen minutes, I was waiting for her to finally finish her not-so-threatening threats.
After a little bit, I had had enough. I decided to interrupt. "Oy, Holls. You done yet? We've been at school for over thirty minutes, and most of the time was spent with you yelling at Chase. I thought you missed Aalia, and you haven't even said hi to her!"
"Oh...right. Hi Aalia! I missed you so much." She smiled as she went to give Aalia a big hug.
"I missed you more! But it was nice not having to deal with you talking so much." Holly glared at her with a pout. "I'm just kidding H, you know I love you!"
"Yeah yeah, I love you too!"
"Hey, guys! You kinda sorta forgot about me. You know, the person who helped you two meet. Your other best bud!"
"Sorry Rosie Posie."
"Stop calling me that Holls. What if someone hears you?"
Holly and Aalia looked at each other and smiles. This was going to be bad. They opened their mouths and started singing together. "Rosie-Posie. Rosie-Posie. Rosie-Posie."
"I hate you both sometimes. You know that?"
"Yep! But, that's just a phase. You'll grow out of it." Aalia patted my head.
Holly and Aalia started laughing together. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if I didn't introduce them to each other. At least they wouldn't single me out! But, then again, without both of them, I would just be a lonely pinecone.
"Um. Girls?" Chase began to talk while ruffling his hair. "Two things. One, everyone is staring at you because you're laughing like maniacs. Two, maybe we should get to class. The bell's about to ring."
Holly and Aalia glared at him, while I laughed at their expense.
"Oh yeah. You're right, Chase. Let's go girls. It's time for the first day of school." I said after I stopped laughing.
Hopefully, the school day will pass without a cinch. Although, that would sure be a first.
