Chapter 33

I took Nurse Jackie's advice and sat out on the porch as often as possible to try adjusting to the air as soon as possible. Of course, my room was shared with Leo, who was still worried about me. He followed me like a shadow. Even as I sat on the porch breathing deeply, he watched over me. Even though I couldn't see him as I looked at the mountainous scenery, I could feel his eyes on my back.

"I know you're watching me. You're eyes don't have to be glued to me 24/7," I said, not even bothering to turn and look at him. Leo came out to the porch with a sigh.

"I'm worried," he said quietly. I smiled gently and stood to place a kiss on his cheek.

"I know, but I'm almost fully adjusted," I tried to assure him. I even hopped in place a few times just to prove it. Leo held my arms gently to still me.

"Have you thought about what you'll do if you get recruited to an Olympic team?" Leo asked. He was always reminding me of the important questions. Olympic teams often picked members out of the National Conference Meets. Scouts would be at the meet all weekend, watching for new talent.

"Well if I get picked, I'll obviously have to come clean. If I'm not picked, I'll stay at Preston Hills for another year," I answered nonchalantly. Leo shook his head.

"I don't think you should push your luck at the boarding school," Leo stopped me. "It's lucky you've made it this far, and I want you to stay for personal reasons, but... you've already successfully gone undetected for an entire season. The school year is half over. I think you're merit in fencing will take you somewhere better, even if it isn't an Olympic team right now," Leo explained.

"Then what happens to us?" I asked, saddened by the thought already. Leo smiled softly and pet my head.

"I'll always love you, Sky, and I'll always be yours if you'll have me. But chasing your dreams is more important. I don't mind being a long distance boyfriend to a famous Olympic fencer," he assured me. I chuckled before holding his hands in mine.

"We've been attached at the hip since the beginning. I don't want to be separated from you. I'll just pack you in my bag and take you with me instead," I joked. I held Leo's hand in mine before leading him back into our room. I sat down on our bed with a sigh as he knelt in front of me. He took my face in his hands and watched my face carefully before giving me a light smile.

"I can see you thinking... stop. We've been together this long now; I'm not letting you go that easily. After everything we've been through, I'm willing to roll with the punches. Plus, I've even met the parents already," he joked. I found myself cracking a a smile as well. He moved pulled me forward slightly to kiss me.

"I love you," he smiled gently. I hung my arms over his shoulders before pecking him again.

"I love you too," I responded. Leo moved his hands to my waist and suddenly stood, picking me up in the process. I wrapped my legs around his waist as I chuckled.

"I don't want to leave your side," I admitted. He hugged me tightly to him as he sighed.

"You think I want you to? You literally saved me, Sky. After protecting you for so long, I would feel like something is missing if you left. But... no matter where you go, my heart will be with you. Anyway, we won't know anything for a few days, so I'd rather not try playing the guessing game before we even know anything. The 'what ifs' will drive us crazy if we keep thinking about them," he tried to redirect me again. He placed me on my feet before letting go of me.

"Let's go to dinner," Leo said. I could see how much he wanted to come off as carefree, but I also saw that the worry never left his face.
