Chapter 34 - Double Cross

Cami POV

I lay down in the back of a van, we were moving, that much I could tell. I knew I was safe. To begin with I thought it was just another cruel trick that Clayton was playing on me, but I knew now they were telling the truth; these people were here to save me.

A lady called Moira had tended to my wounds, she sat with me in the back of the van; along with a woman called Beth and an injured man called Cameron. There was another man in the passenger seat, it sounded like he thought he was Quinn’s father and the man driving appeared to be her boyfriend.
I was confused, my head hurt, I was just glad to not be on the floor of that basement anymore.

“How are you feeling Cami?” Moira asked as she checked my eyes with a small torch.

We went over a bump in the road and I winced at the sudden movement.

“Do you need more pain relief?”

I gingerly shook my head and smiled weakly at her.

“No. Thank you. I’m tired of being drugged”

“I understand. If the pain gets too much, just ask”

I looked over at Beth and Cameron. It was clear to see that they were together. Beth was lying with her head in his lap while he stroked her hair. I looked at the injury on Cameron’s head, I could see that it had healed already.

“Are you all wolves too?” I asked, looking at the group.

Jayce turned his head slightly, keeping his eyes on the road.

“Yes we are, we aren’t like Clayton and his men though. We won’t hurt you”

I nodded and looked down at my hands.

“And Quinn. What is she?”

There was silence for a few seconds and Jayce cleared his throat.

“She is unique...”

I laughed at his comment, holding my ribs as the movement caused significant pain.

“That she is” I answered, smiling.

I wasn’t stupid, I had known all along that my best friend was special. She was Quinn and she loved me, that had been all I needed to know. But now this all changed everything. Once I healed, her and I were going to have a long chat.

I looked back at Beth and Cameron. Beth was sitting up now and holding Cameron’s hand in her own.

“I love you” she said softly.

Cameron kissed her on the cheek and brushed a strand of hair behind her ear. There was something familiar about her but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, maybe she reminded me of someone from high school. She had a blonde cheerleader vibe about her.

“I love you too, hun” Cameron whispered back.

I smiled at their interaction and Beth turned her head to face me.

“How are you feeling red?”

I felt the colour drain from my face and sweat begin to bead in my hairline. I tried to speak but my mouth was dry. A familiar feeling of dread formed in my stomach, a feeling that I’d grown accustomed to since being captured.

“Are you ok Cami? You’ve gone grey again. Do you need to be sick?” Moira moved closer to me, placing the back of her hand on my forehead.

I kept my eyes on Beth as she sat staring at me.

“What did you c-call me?” I asked, my voice shaking.

Jayce peered at me through the rear vision mirror and I felt like maybe I wasn’t safe after all.

“Sorry?” Beth replied, her gaze breaking away from mine.

“You called me red...”

Beth shrugged her shoulders and nuzzled back into Cameron’s side. A flashback came into my mind of lying on the ground in the basement, cold water trickling over my lips, a feminine voice soothing me...calling me red.

“Camille. What is it?” Jayce asked firmly.

I looked into the rear view mirror, my eyes meeting with his.
Suddenly Jayce pulled the vehicle over sharply to the side of the road.

“Fuck Jayce! What’s going on?” Cameron yelled as we were thrown around in the back of the van.

Moira grabbed me to help steady me and soften the impact. The pain was minimal, I was too focused on Beth. She looked terrified.

Jayce jumped out of the driver’s seat, and stormed around to the back of the vehicle. We all flinched as he ripped the doors open. His eyes were black, I’d never seen anything like it.

“Get out Beth!” He roared.

The blonde cowered against Cameron, squeezing her eyes closed.

“Jayce, what is going on?!

“Beta. Let go of her. Beth...get out of the van...NOW!”

Beth gasped and Cameron released his grip on her, as if something had compelled him. I watched as Beth slowly climbed forward and approached the doors of the van. Jayce reached in and grabbed her by the arm, ripping her from the vehicle.

“Alpha” Cameron said firmly, jumping out after his girlfriend, “explain what is happening here!”

“Mason, hold her”

The man that had been in the passenger seat came around and grabbed Beth’s arms, holding them behind her back. Jayce took a step back, crossing his arms in front of his chest and staring at Beth; then he looked to me.

“Camille. Tell us what you know” he said gruffly.

Everyone looked at me, making me feel more than uncomfortable. My head was throbbing, I was exhausted. Moira put her hand gently on my knee, giving me enough courage to look back up at Jayce.

“I thought that...Beth had something familiar about her”

I cleared my throat and continued on.

“But it wasn’t until she called me ‘red’ that I remembered her from the basement. She came to me recently, she gave me water...”

Cameron scoffed and shook his head.

“That doesn’t make any sense at all Jayce. The girl has been hit around the head more than once, it wasn’t Beth!”

Jayce leant forward and grabbed Beth’s chin in his hand, forcing her to look at him.

“How did you get to The Orcann compound?” He growled.

Tears ran down her face and she sobbed.

“I told you! They captured me and used me as bait”

Where did they capture you?”

“Outside the Fern Creek gates, I was heading into town to pick up some things...”

“When?”

“Umm, yesterday...it all just happened so fast. I promise you, I’ve never seen her before” she cried, gesturing to me with her eyes.

Jayce let go of Beth’s face and stood up straight. He stood there, glaring at her for a couple of minutes. Then he looked up at Mason.

“Well, it’s obvious that we’ve found our traitor”

Mason nodded and tightened his grip as Beth struggled against him.

“No! Cameron! You have to believe me! I’m not a traitor”

Cameron pinched the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes. He had been taking in everything, calculating it all in his head.

“It doesn’t add up Beth” he groaned, his head dropping forward in defeat, “we had men at the main road the whole time, I was near the main road the whole time...I destroyed the front gates”

Beth stared at him, trying to figure out what he was getting at.

“If you got captured after we left then you would have arrived at the compound when we were already surrounding it. No cars have entered this place since we’ve been in the forest...you’re lying”

Beth’s eyes grew wide. And she struggled against Mason’s hold again. I could tell she was getting desperate, she knew she had been caught out.

“I’m not lying, maybe I got the times wrong. I don’t know! Please, I love you”

Cameron roared and turned around, punching a tree behind him. I flinched as the trunk split from the ground all the way up.

“The only way you could have got here before us is in your wolf form...willingly” Mason said.

Beth shook her head, not saying a word.

“You have been working with them since before the attack. You told those wolves where they could find Quinn, you told them how they could get to her undetected! You placed that photo of Cami under her pillow!”

“No” she sobbed.

“Quinn trusted you! You were her friend! How could you!?” Jayce growled.

He grabbed her face again but she refused to make eye contact with him.

“What have they got on you? What do they have that we don’t?!”

“Nothing...”

“TELL ME!”

“My mate!” Beth cried, tears flowing freely, “they have my mate”

Jayce let go of her face and looked to Cameron, who was still facing the other way. I watched Cameron’s shoulders slump and he shook his head slowly.

“You’ve been playing me” he whispered, then turned around to face her once more.

“Me playing you?” Beth scoffed, her voice with a bitter edge, “Jayce is the one being played...by Quinn”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“Clayton doesn’t want to kill Quinn, he wants to mate her. Quinn is going to be Clayton’s Luna. That’s been the plan all along”

I was shocked at what Beth was saying. I had known Quinn her whole life, if this was the plan then I knew with all my heart that she hadn’t been privy to it. I also knew she wouldn’t agree to it either.

“Bullshit. You’re full of it Beth. If he wanted to mate her then why would he try to kill her when she was a baby?” Cameron asked.

“That was before he knew what she was. Clayton plans to have the strongest army that anyone has ever seen. He wants to take over all territory’s and be the ultimate Alpha. To do that he needs the ultimate Luna and one that can provide him with tribrid heirs to carry on his reign”

Jayce POV

I glared at Beth, listening to the shit that she was dribbling. Even though she was a lying bitch, I believed her. Clayton was fucking nuts and I wouldn’t put anything past him.

“Well that’s not going to happen” I growled.

Beth laughed and I clenched my fist to prevent myself from slapping her pathetic face.

“You won’t be able to stop him. His men are fearless and out number you, five to one”

What the hell was she talking about? His numbers weren’t that great.

Where are they?” I asked, between clenched teeth.

Beth looked away from me.

“Tell me where they are or I’ll rip your head from your shoulders”

Beth laughed and looked at me again.

“No you won’t! Cameron would never forgive you-”

Suddenly Cameron jumped forward, ripping Beth from Mason’s grip and throwing her up against the side of the van by her throat. She coughed and spluttered, desperately grabbing at Cameron’s hands around her neck.

“Tell us where they are or I’ll rip your head from your shoulders” he growled.

His eyes were black and I could tell from the look on Beth’s face that she didn’t doubt his threat at all.

“There is another c-compound” she coughed, “the other one was a d-decoy”

“Where?!”

“South of h-here. You’ll s-see a dirt r-road coming up. H-head down th-there”

A second compound? Fuck. This was something that we had not planned for. A second compound meant we were going in blind. Their scents were masked, we couldn’t use our mind link, they potentially had a heap more fighters than us.

“Who is your mate?” Cameron asked.

Beth coughed again and fought against Cameron’s grip.

“Who?!”

“B-Brax. His name is Brax!”

“I’ll send him your regards”

Beth looked at Cameron with confusion, confusion that quickly turned into fear as a low growl emanated from his body.

“N-NO!”

Beth’s screams were cut short as Cameron’s grip tightened around her throat. She kept kicking her legs out at him until a loud crack had her body hanging limply in his hands. I looked away as Cameron dropped Beth to the ground and got back into the back of the van. As Beta, Cameron knew what had to be done. There was no way that Beth could have been allowed to live, she was the enemy.

“We need to keep moving” I grunted, “If Beth was telling the truth then we need to get to Quinn before that bastard lays a hand on her”

I looked to Cameron who nodded at me, his black eyes now replaced with a hollow sadness.
