Prologue

There’s three words that people long to hear, just eight little letters that can make them feel as if they’re on top of the world. But then, there’s people in the world that can use those words as manipulation. Those people, are scum of the earth along with others.

My eyes wandered around; everything was covered in a white sheet of snow. The pine trees emitted the aroma of a tidy campsite. My hands barely keeping warm with the thin gloves that I hurriedly pulled on. He cleared his throat, gaining my attention. I stared at his chest that I was eye-level to, the words that came out caused my head to snap up.

“I love you, Amber.”

Looking up into his grey eyes, I could feel my heart stop almost instantly. He smiled down at me, grabbing my chin softly as he stared into my eyes, into my soul. He repeated those three words, those eight letters.

“I-I love you too, Rory.” I uttered in response.

People can say those words without actually meaning it, but they make it sound so sincere. It’s energy consuming wondering if they actually mean it so we just go with the flow and accept it for what it is. But the thing is, when people show their true colors, don’t paint over them.

His eyes gleamed with pure happiness; we’ve been together for a good seven months. I could tell he was already in love at three months. Oh, the foolish grin he wears, it does something to me. The unknowingly of what he’s getting himself into. I should be ashamed of myself, but still, I selfishly hold onto him.

“You just don’t know how much I love you,” He claims eagerly, engulfing me into a warm and tight hug.

A faint smile appeared on my lips, not because I was getting away with anything but the thought of someone loving me to a point of uncertainty. I carefully wrapped my arms around him, laying my head on his shoulder. He was a safety net, he kept me safe.

“I really don’t know,” I murmured quietly.

He pulled away, holding my hands into his, the look of concern washed over his features. Reaching out, his gloved hands cupped my face and I automatically smiled at him. He had a certain effect on me unlike any other.

“I’m sorry for calling you out, let me walk you back home.” He offered.

I didn’t refuse and he led me down the path, the walk was quiet but brisk. Soon, the snow started to fall again. The colder it got the more fell, it was an evening like this that cause my body to ache but right now it didn’t. I was filled with so much warmth inside my chest. So much that I could burst.

“It might be a storm tonight; do you think I could stay over?” Rory pulled me out of my self-pitying thoughts.

“Of course. You didn’t have to ask.” I cleared my throat.

Returning home, we lounged in front of the fire. Listening to music and then the crackling of the wood that was burning. I didn’t deserve this; I know I didn’t but he made me feel like I was worth it.
