Chapter 11

Jack’s POV

I was sitting in my car and watching Hannah entering her office. It had been two days since I was following her. Yet, I still could not get the courage to talk to her. How easily we could become moral police for others’ lives, but when we are in a situation to correct mistakes, we did not get the courage to face them.

I followed her movements for the past two days. She went to the office and came back home. She did not go anywhere else. Except for an elderly female who met her every morning. Who was that? And I remembered that Timmy. Who was he? Her boyfriend? My hands clutched the steering wheel in anger. My blood boiled in rage at the thought of Hannah with another man.
A small voice asked me what right I have to feel jealousy. I did not know if I had any right? But

I could not control my anger at the thought. After contemplations and contemplations, I again sighed at the lack of my courage to meet Hannah. I drove back to my place.
After walking up and down my living room for the fiftieth time, I finally got an idea. I picked up my mobile and called my friend. He is the boss of the accounting firm in which Hannah is working.

“Joseph Perez here.” I smiled at his voice.

“I know it is you, man,” I said to him.

After a moment of silence, he replied in a cheerful voice, “Jack, How are you, man?”
“I am doing good, Jossy.”

“How many times I told you not to call me Jossy,” He said in fake anger. I laughed at his answer and realized that nothing changed between us.

“Are you free tomorrow? I want to meet you.” I said to him in a slightly serious tone.

“Tomorrow?” He was confused.

“Yes, Joseph. My life depends on it.” Joseph realized the severity of my statement.

“How about 10 in the morning. Can you come to my office?”

I immediately interfered with him. “No. No. Not in your office. Can you come to my place instead?”

Joseph is perplexed now. He uttered an OK before hanging up the phone.

I then called my brother Raphe. He joined my firm last year after completing his course.

“Hey, Raphe,” I asked him as soon as he picked up the phone.

“Hey, Jack. How are Kelly, Mathew, and Ruby? You should have been here by yesterday. Where are you?” He asked.

“Everyone is fine. I am still in Meadowville. But, see, I will not be coming back soon. I have something more important to take care of.” I said to him.

“What?” He asked in a confused tone.

“Raphe, I will explain later. I will be working from here from till the problem is sorted out. You have to coordinate things there as per my instructions. Also, I now involve Perez’s firm to check our accounts.”

“Perez? Joseph?” Raphe asked

“Yes. So don’t expect me there anytime soon. I know this is vague, but I will explain later.”

“Jack, Is everything alright.”

“No. Yes. Yes. Everything’s fine. I will call you later, OK.” I cut the call.

I leaned back on my bed. ‘I am coming to you, Hannah. I will right all my wrongs. I will get you justice. I will make your life better. Even if I do not have a place in your life again.’ With that thought, I drifted to sleep.

I was waiting for Joseph in my place, and he came sharp at 10. That showed how much he was worried for me. I was glad to get such a friend.

“Hey Joseph,” I called him as he entered.

“Hey, Jack. Whose house is this?” He asked as he entered.

“This is my place. I purchased this couple of years back. I use this house whenever I come here.” I told him and then asked, “Want some coffee?”

“No, man. Not now. I am perplexed. What do you want to talk about?” He asked straight to the point.

I sighed and kept silent for a moment. Then, I gathered my courage and thoughts and looked at him.

“You see, Joseph, it is about Hannah,” I said to him.

“Hannah?” He looked confused.

“Hannah Johnson. She works in your company.”

“Yes, she is our customer relations officer. But how do you know her?” He asked me in confusion.

I looked at him with a downcast face. “I know her very well. To be frank, I am responsible for her situation.”

I told him what happened two years ago and why it had happened. Joseph was shocked to the core and sat speechlessly.

“Joseph,” I called him. He looked at me and shook his head.

“What happened to you, Jack? This is totally against your nature. You never treated anyone like this in your life. Why?”

If I had told him the truth, would he believe it? No. No one believes it, including Hannah. So I hid the truth.

“I don’t know why I did that. But when I learned the truth, I want to correct all the wrong things I had done to Hannah. I know her life will not be the same, but at least I can get her the degree she lost, and it will give her a good future.”

Joseph sat in silence for some time. He then looked at me. “What do you want me to do?”

“I need an opportunity to meet Hannah. I need your help for that.”

“Do you want me to talk to her?” Joseph asked me.

“What? No. No. She will never talk to me personally. So I want an opportunity to meet her officially. So please tell her that you are taking up my company’s accounts, and for that, she had to meet me to discuss the same.”

Joseph thought for a moment. He then looked at me.

“What you did for Hannah is wrong. But as you friend and Hannah’s boss, I want good things in both your life. If this will make both of you better, then I will do it.” He said.

“Thanks, Joseph. Can you arrange a meeting tomorrow?” He nodded.

“Oh! And one more thing.” I said and got up to take a folder.

“I need Hannah’s signature in these two papers. I want you to get her signed without her knowledge.”

“What are these?” Joseph asked as he opened the folder.

“One is the contract between Cyber gate solutions and Hannah. It says that she had signed up for the project with us three years back. The second is the letter to the University to demand an explanation for expelling her. See, if I prepare the contract, I can send this demand to the University asking for the reason to expelling her and in turn help Hannah to get her degree.”

“Will it happen?”

I smiled bitterly. “The University was eager to expel Hannah to be on good terms with my company. So if they get to know that there is a contract between Hannah and Cyber Gate solutions, they will give her the degree to be on good terms with my company again.”
Joseph chuckled at me. “You are bending people on your terms.”

“I know. First, I thought….” I cleared my throat and spoke again. “I thought I did it for Amy. But now I am doing it for Hannah. But get the signature without her knowledge.”

“Because I know Hannah. She will never sign if she knows that I am involved in this.” I told him.

“But how I get her signed without her knowledge.”

“Please, man. Think of something. Do it for me.” I told him.

Joseph looked at me for a moment and nodded his head. “I will try.” He said and got up and

looked at his watch.

“I have to leave now. I will arrange the meeting between you two tomorrow.” With those words, he moved towards the door. After a couple of steps, he turned at looked at me thoughtfully.

“If this happened three years back, then do you know Timmy?” He asked me.

“Timmy?” I frowned. Who is this, Timmy? I asked Joseph the same.

“Oh.” I bit his lip, unsure of what to talk about.

“Joseph. I hear the name Timmy again. Can you please tell me who Timmy is?” I asked him in an urgent tone.

“You see. Since you said this happened three years back, I thought….” I stopped and sighed once before continuing. “Timmy is two years old. He is Hannah’s son. Hannah said she met his father when she was in University. I don’t know anything more than that. So I thought maybe you are his father.”

I was now too stunned to speak. Seeing my reaction, Joseph just patted my shoulder and left the place.

I have a son.
