“Hey, Paige! Had your dinner?” I asked her after seeing Paige on the couch in the living room.
“Yes.” She smiled.
I dropped my clutch on the table.
“I am going to make some coffee for myself. Do you want some?”
“Yes. Please,” Paige told me.
I prepared two mugs of coffee, handed one to Paige, and settled on the opposite couch with my cup.
“How was your date?” Paige asked after sipping my coffee.
“It was good.”
“Where did you go? What you guys did?” She asked.
“He took me to the seaside restaurant.”
“Your favorite restaurant? How did he know? Did you tell him?”
I shook my head. “No. It should be co-incidence.”
“We just spoke with each other over dinner. He told about his family and job.”
“Is it true that he works in Cyber Gate? And a friend of Mr. Michael?” Paige asked.
“How do you know?” I asked her in surprise.
“He told me when you were getting ready.”
I kept silent. Should I tell Paige that Jack owns the company? ‘I have come here as a friend of Michael. I don’t want to have any unwanted disturbances.’ Jack’s voice sounded in my head.
“Yes. Jack works in Cyber Gate. He is Mr. Michael’s friend and so has come to cover for him.”
“Jack?” Paige raised her brow.
“Yes, He asked me to call him Jack,” I said with a smile.
“He took you to your favorite restaurant. He works in your dream company. What else?” Paige asked with a smirk.
“What?” I asked her.
Paige laughed at my reaction. “You like him?”
“I think so. I feel a pleasant feel whenever I see him. But I was anxious. But after today, that anxiety lessened.” I said to her.
After a moment of silence, I asked her.
“What else did you talk about?”
“When I was getting ready… What else did you talk about?”
“Just asked about him.”
“What do you think about him?”
Paige hummed. “I felt doubtful about him at first. But he sounds like a good guy now.”
I smiled brightly at her.
Paige and I walked towards the classroom, chatting with each other. My first class is with Jack, and I was eagerly waiting to see him. Paige chuckled at my reaction, and I shushed her. Entering the classroom, we took our seats.
The sound of chatter that filling the entire classroom stopped when Jack stepped in. His eyes searched for me as soon as he entered. His lips curved into a beautiful smile once he found me. My face flushed red at his smile. I discreetly elbowed Paige hearing her chuckle. I could not stop my smile, and his smirk deepened as if he understood my emotions.
At lunch, my mobile beeped. I looked up to see a message from an unknown number. I opened it to see the text.
‘I have urgent work. So I cannot meet you at the regular time.’
I replied, asking who that is even though I guessed the answer. And my guess was correct.
A pang of disappointment raised in me, but I reply saying, fine.
‘Can we meet at 6 pm? Are you free?’
I replied a yes.
‘You home or mine?’
I thought for a moment and responded as mine.
By 6 pm, I got a message from Jack saying that he will be late.
After dinner, I wished good night to Paige and waited for Jack in the living room. I took up my half-finished book and started reading it. The sound of the doorbell pulled me from the story. I looked up to see the time showing as 10.
I saw Jack standing through the see-through hole and opened the door. He looked exhausted. I signaled him to come in, and he obliged. I sat on the couch and leaned his head back, and closed his eyes.
“Sorry, there was an emergency in the office, and it took some time to sort out.”
I sat next to him.
“Is it so difficult to manage both?” I asked in a soft voice. I felt terrible for him to strain so much.
He looked at me for a moment and smiled softly.
“Nothing that I could not manage. I cannot leave away the task I have taken up.”
“Did you eat anything?”
He shook his head. “Just a couple of coffees.”
I went to the kitchen and heated the leftover dinner in the oven. Then I put it on a plate and brought it to him to the hall. Jack looked as if he would fall in exhaustion. I handed over the plate to him, and he took it in silence. We never spoke, and only the sound of the fork scraping the plate was heard. Once he finished eating, I took the plate from him.
“Do you want some coffee?” I asked him.
“That will be great. Thank you.” He said.
I went to the kitchen. Preparing two mugs of coffee and I came back and stopped in tracks seeing him. Jack was asleep on the couch. I smiled at him, kept the mugs down. I took the spare blanket from the cupboard and covered him with that. I drained the coffee in the sink and left to my room.
I woke up early and felt that I am missing something. I felt anxious without reason, and then I remembered. Jack?
I freshened myself and ran to the living room to see Jack sleeping still. I went to the kitchen. Switching on the percolator, I took the packet of bread to make toast.
“Good Morning!” Hearing Jack’s voice, I turned with a smile. My breath hitched at the sight of him. He looked handsome with tousled hair and a lazy smile. My hands wanted to feel the soft hair and controlled my hands before I act on impulse.
“Good Morning! Did you sleep well?” I asked him.
“Yes. Thank you for dinner.” He walked towards me. I stepped back, leaning back on the kitchen island. He came and stood in front of me.
“Thank you.” He said to me.
He said as his hands slowly trapped me and pulled me to him. “For the dinner, then the couch, and finally the blanket.” His lips touched my forehead.
“Coffee?” I asked him.
His answer was interrupted by a thud. We both looked to see Paige standing open-mouthed, looking at us. Her water bottle was at her feet, and I realized that it was the source of the thud.
“What?” I asked her in surprise.
“Mr. Martinez?” Paige called him.
I then realized us and moved away.
“Miss Nelson, Good morning.” Jack smiled at her.
“What are you doing so early here?”
Jack chuckled at her question. I looked at Paige.
“Paige, Jack came here last night. We were about to meet for my project discussion, but he got an emergency and came very late. He was tired and slept here.”
“What?” Paige almost shouted in shock.
Jack laughed at her reaction. “It was my mistake. I was tired and never knew that I slept on the couch. I just got up.”
“Oh!” Paige said, not knowing what to say. Then she looked at me. “Hanna, can you prepare breakfast for me too. Let me get ready for the day.” With that, she turned back to her room.
“Will you join us for breakfast?” I asked Jack.
He shook his head. “No, I need to leave. I have to check with my office before coming to university.”
I nod my head. “Coffee then?”
He said yes, and I poured him a cup. After the coffee, he got up to leave.
“Did you have your code ready?” He asked me.
“I am doing some final test runs. It will be ready in two days.”
His face dropped in disappointment for a moment. He nodded his head with a smile and moved to the door, holding my hand. At the doorstep, he looked into my eyes. His fingers traced my cheeks.
“I will leave before my self-control breaks.” He whispered with a smile and left. I turned to see Max standing at his door, looking at me. I waved my hand, saying Good morning, and went inside to prepare breakfast.
