Chapter 14

After Cade left, I fixed the a/c. Then I went outside and called Leo while I smoked.

"Hi." Leo greets me.

"Hey, so good news. Cade said we could meet at his house from now on. My mom came home and got in a huge fight with her boyfriend. He was pretty freaked out by the whole thing." I tell him.

"That's good. Are you okay?" He asks.

"Yeah, just my mom being herself. The guy broke up with her and now she's really upset. I'm hoping she doesn't relapse. She is due in 7-ish weeks and I don't want her to go missing." I tell him. It's nice to have someone to talk to bout this. He's not going to report anything to child services so I can be 100% honest.

"I'm sorry you have to go through this. I grew up with a shit dad. I know what it's like. I'm here if you need to talk."

"Thanks, Leo I appreciate it," I tell him honestly.

"So have you found a good place to put the wire in the counselor's office?" He asks.

"Not yet, I was talking to him and actually getting counseling when I was in there. I'll look better next time."

"Okay sounds good. I was thinking that I could set off his car alarm so he'll have to leave while you're in there. Then you have enough time to place the wire."

"Umm, I was wondering. Once the wire is placed could you listen and only tell me things that are important. I don't feel right about listening to Cade's sessions." I tell him while I stomp on my cigarette butt.

"Sure, it might be better if you did since I won't be sure if something is important. But I'll listen and only tell you the necessary information."

"Thanks, Leo, its just after Tuesday when I was crying in his office I didn't feel okay with listening to another person's sessions."

"Yeah, I get it. At first, when Xavier had me doing surveillance I didn't feel right about some of the things he had me doing. It gets easier the longer you do it. It also helps that I'm not involved with the people. You have to go to school every day and see them." He tells me.

"Anyway, I should head to bed. Thanks for everything Leo, goodnight."

I then go to bed. It takes a while to fall asleep since the apartment still hasn't cooled off completely.

My Friday went by like normal. I ate with Cade in the trees. He said a few things about Tomás to me. It was progress.

Then the weekend came and went. I worked, trained with Leo, and saw Marcus and Diego. My fight was in a week, on Friday night and I needed to be ready. Tomás had a great weekend, we played lots and he wouldn't stop talking about Cade and how excited he was to go to his house on Thursday. My mom was in her room all weekend, which was better than her going out and partying. But I was pretty sure she'd be missing work this week.

On Monday I dropped Tomás off at preschool and headed to my school. Today I would be meeting with Cade after school for Spanish tutoring. I was hoping he didn't think I was stalking him or something. My plan- if he asked. Was to tell him that we got to pick, and he was the only person on the list I actually knew. I was hoping that my explanation didn't seem stalkerish. But he may not even care.

In English I sat by Cade, he said hi when I first came in. In bio, he came up to me before the lesson started, "how good are you at Spanish?"

"Well, I've been speaking it as long as I have been English. I also took it as a class in school since grade 2. Well until this year since our school doesn't have a class for those who are fluent, why?" I ask him.

"I just found out you're my tutor. Just a heads up I'm terrible at Spanish so you'll have your work cut out for you." He says with a chuckle.

"Well, I'm trying to teach Tomás how to read and write in Spanish. Maybe I could teach you at the same time. He wouldn't stop talking about how excited he is to go to your house and see all your trucks." I tell him hoping that he will keep talking. He seems very fond of Tomás and I’ve decided to use that to my advantage.

"That sounds like it may work. Tell him I'm looking forward to it too, I'll see you after school then." Then he takes his seat.

Wyatt slides next to me and says, "Who's Thomas?"

"My little brother, we don't have to sit by each other today you know it's not a lab day," I tell him hoping he'll leave. All last week he left me alone I don't know why he was trying to sit by me now.

"Ya, I know I just wanted to sit by you. Is that a problem?" He asks while running his eyes over me.

"No, it's fine," I tell him, and then the bell rings. The whole class he tried to talk to me, but I kept ignoring him. By the end of the class, he was frustrated.

As I stood up after the bell rang Wyatt grabbed my arm lightly to get my attention. "Look Lola I'm sorry if I came on too strong. I think this class would be a lot easier for both of us if we tried to get along."

I stare at him for a while and then said, "we can try to get along. But I don't like you in a romantic way so please stop making comments about that."

"Oh, come one, I'm sure if you just gave me-"

"Is he bothering you, Lola?" Cade asks.

"Fuck off Jameson!" Wyatt exclaims calling Cade by his last name.

"I'm okay, I'm just leaving." And with that Cade and I walk out the door. He comes with me to my locker as I'm getting my lunch Cade says, "you should try and get a different lab partner."

"I don't think the teacher will let me," I tell him. As we walk to his locker he says, "she would just tell her about some of the things he was saying to you during our lab last week."

"I don't want to do that. Besides I can handle myself just fine." I say. As he gets his lunch from his locker, he shakes his head.

"I know you can handle yourself but that doesn’t mean you should have to. That guy has so many complaints against him. I think you were partnered with him because you are new and didn't request not to be. But it's up to you just know he's not a good person." He tells me.

We then walk to our spot in silence. When we start eating, I decided to ask Cade about Wyatt, "what makes you say he's a bad person? What did he do?"

"He likes to sleep with girls who are too drunk to object. I'm pretty sure he's drugged some too." He tells me.

I nod and say, "well I'll be fine. I'm not going to any parties anytime soon. He's not going to drug me at school. I can put up with his rude behavior. I don't want to make a big deal. They could easily take my scholarship away."

"If you need me to back you up I can but whatever you decide I'll respect." He says.

"Thanks," I say, and we continue to eat in silence.

When the bell rings we both head inside and finish our afternoon classes.
