Chapter 33

Lola left me to take Tomás to the washroom. I was having a good time so far. Her friend Marcus was nice, and her grandfather was fun to talk to. Plus, Tomás was here which always made for a fun time. But I knew the real reason I was actually having fun was that Lola was here. She made things I normally hated great just by being there. I couldn’t believe I had met someone like her after all I had done. I didn’t deserve her but at this point, I was too selfish to push her way like before.

As I was lost in my thoughts two girls came over to me. “Hi, are you a friend of Lola’s?” The taller one asked me as she sat down in a chair beside me.

“Yeah, we go to the same school.”

“Oh, so you go to that rich prep school then?” The other girl asks, I notice she’s holding a baby. I immediately look away.

“Ugh, yeah I guess.”

“So why Lola?” The first girl asks.

“What do you mean?”

“What she means is that Lola gets every guy, I mean she’s slept with half the guys here. Why’d you want her?” The one with the baby replies.

I give her a confused look. A moment later Lola joins us.

“Oh, I see you’ve met two of my childhood friends, this is Theresa and Sofia, and this is Cade,” Lola says. She seems like she knows they said something bad about her but she’s not sure what.

Theresa sneers at her and Sofia shakes her head. I give Lola a worried look. As she’s about to say something the guy who was kissing her neck in the hall walks up to us.

“Hey, I’m Diego, Marcus’ brother, you must be Cade. Just thought I’d come over and introduce myself.” He seems a bit drunk but not malicious.

“Nice to meet you, thanks for having me.” I reply and hold my hand out for him to shake. He laughs and shakes his head at me.

“These two are going to fight over the puta.” Thersa says.

Lola huffs and says, “Look we are going to leave now, I’ll see you all around.”

“No eres mejor que nosotros. Deja de fingir que eres.” (You aren’t better than us. Stop pretending like you are.) Sofia says as Lola and I walk away.

When we reach Lola’s car she says, “Sorry about them, they are kind of toxic.”

“Hey, don’t worry about it. So, what do you want to do?” I ask her.

“Well, I was thinking we could do something fun. Maybe go to a movie, bowl, or play mini golf. it’s only 7 so we have lots of time left. My mom’s looking after Tomás, and they are going to stay over so I’m free all night.”

“How about minigolf, I don’t think I’ve done that since Noah’s 10th Birthday,” I say.

We get in her car and find a place that is open. On the way, Lola asks, “So what did they say about me?”

“They said that you had slept with half the guys there,” I tell her and begin to laugh. I could tell it was a total lie, but it amused me that the two girls thought I’d believe them.

“Hey, why are you laughing at me again?” She says with fake anger.

“I think it’s funny, they were so jealous of me it was kind of amusing.”

“Well, I don’t think it’s funny. I never laughed when Elizabeth made a scene at the dance.”

I stop laughing and turn serious. “I like that I got to see your world, and if it’s any consultation they wish they could be like you,” I tell her.

“I’m glad you liked it,” she replies.

Mini golfing was fun. Lola beat me, by a lot. She was super competitive. She got mad a few times when I laughed at her for concentrating so hard. When we were done, we grabbed some ice cream and ate it inside the shop. It was a great night, and I didn’t want it to end but I also didn’t know what to say to extend the night without sounding like I wanted to sleep with her right then.

I mean I did but not yet. I knew she had been through a lot and was pretty sure she wasn’t ready for that. Hell, I wasn’t either. I used sex to escape my reality and I didn’t want that with Lola. I was slowly changing and wanted to do things right with her.

So, as we pulled onto my driveway I asked, “Do you maybe want to come in? You could stay over since it’s so late? My dad Is out of town and Kyle is visiting Laura’s family in Flagstaff. I think Noah is staying at a friend’s place.”

I saw Lola get nervous and grip her steering wheel.

“Shit, I didn’t mean for it to sound like that. Look I just want to hang out more that’s all. I really like hanging out with you.”

She relaxed a bit and took a deep breath, “Look Cade I really like hanging out with you too. Want to maybe watch a movie then?”

“Sure, that sounds great,” I say. I really need to run what I say through my head before I say it out loud.

We went to the media room and sat down on the sectional. We looked through Netflix for a bit. We settled on Stepbrothers. The first half of the movie was awkward. We sat on opposite ends of the sectional and didn’t look at each other. I could tell I had freaked her out. Halfway through, I decided to pause the movie and clear the air.

Cade paused the movie. I kept staring at my lap, I was too nervous to look at him.

“Look, I didn’t mean to freak you out with what I said. I should have chosen my words better. I know you’re not ready for anything like that. I wasn’t-” Cade started to say but I cut him off.

“Sorry I know I’m acting weird. I just thought that since you heard about me and Diego you thought I’d want to sleep with you right away.”

“That wasn’t what I was thinking Lola,” he tells me.

I finally look up and see that he is being sincere. “Why weren’t you though? You found out about Diego plus two of my friends told you I slept around.” Isn’t that how men think?

“No, I know both of us aren’t ready for that. Look, Lola, I really like you and I’m not going to lie. I have a bad past when it comes to sex. For all of high school I’ve slept around with whoever would have me. I’ve never had a relationship before. I’m getting better and I want to do it right with you.”

Was he ever sweet, now I felt horrible I agreed to come in since I wanted to break into his dad’s office since he said he was out of town? The entire time I was watching the movie I was trying to think of ways I wouldn’t have to sleep with him but still get to stay over. I forgot it was Cade, a guy who I trusted. A guy who respected and understood me. I decide to be a bit more honest with Cade.

“I have a rough past with sex. Some stuff happened to me last year and Diego was the only person who knew for a long time. He only knew because he found me after, um...” I take a big breath and continue. “After I was raped. He helped me a lot and I slept with him because I didn’t have to explain why he couldn’t touch me. I wanted to prove to myself that I could have sex and it seemed like a good idea at the time. Diego isn’t the type to commit, and I think it was always just fun for him.” I explain to Cade, I trust him a lot and I know that telling him will help me and us. Mr. Garett had told me about how being honest and talking about trama was a way to get over what happened during my last session.

“Oh Lola, I’m so sorry that happened to you,” Cade says. I can tell he has some tears in his eyes. I move over to him and give him a hug. I feel tears hit my shoulder, I let him cry. I know that what I told him is bringing up feelings about his mom as well.

He pulls away and I say, “thanks for listening, I was so scared to tell you. Now I’m glad I did though.”

“I want to tell you something else, if that okay, it’s pretty deep though.”

“Of course, it’s okay,” I tell him.

“Okay, well when I was a freshman these blonde twin girls who were sophomores started to pay attention to me, like a lot of attention. I had never had a girlfriend or any attention from females before, so I was excited. Anyway, I ended up seeing them both at the same time. It was weird because they were okay with sharing me. They always wanted to come over to my house, but I would never invite them because I was embarrassed of my dad. They basically told me if I had them over, they would sleep with me. I invited them over and lost my virginity to one of them. While that was going on the other one stole all of our cars, she had some guys come and help her. I didn’t realize until the next day. My dad figured it out and was livid with me. He found the girls and did some pretty fucked up stuff to them. They moved away after that.”

“What did your dad do?” I ask.

“He didn’t rape them, but he did kidnap them and had them beaten. He threatened them. They gave the cars back and left the state.”

“Wow, that’s horrible. I can’t believe you had to go through all that at 14.” I say.

“Anyway, want to finish the movie now?” he asked me clearly done talking about this.

“Sure,” I replied.

Cade restarted the movie and we moved closer together. Cade put his arm around me and asked, “Is this okay?”

“Yeah,” I replied while laying my head on his shoulder.

As we watched the movie, I felt safe and calm. Telling Cade helped me feel a lot better.

We must have fallen asleep because I wake up to a dark screen. We are laying down spooning on the sectional. I reach for my phone and see it’s 3 am.

I lay back for a moment and think through my next actions. I know only Cade and his mother are in the house. If I am able to get off the couch without waking Cade I could get into his father’s office. If I wake him, I’ll tell him I need to use the washroom.

I roll onto the floor as slowly as I can. Once there I watch Cade, still sound asleep. I stand up and go to the door. I watch him a while longer to make sure he hasn’t woken up. Once I’m confident he is still asleep I grab my bag and leave the room as quietly as possible.

I get the map on my phone and locate Jeffery Jameson’s office. I look around and listen to see if anyone is around. I’m met with silence, so I begin to examine the lock. It’s a simple keypad with numbers. I do what Mike taught me and get the code right on my third try and write it down for later.

Once unlocked I open the door and go inside. I shut the door quietly behind me and inspect the equipment. There are no security cameras or any extra measures. I sit down at the desk and plug in my equipment. It starts to copy all the data from the computer without me having to touch anything. I send a text to Leo to let him know what I’m doing.

A half-hour later I have all the data copied so I quietly leave. I shut the door and hit the lock button. Once the door is locked and no one can tell I was there I start to put my equipment into my bag as I walk back to the movie room. I’m stopped dead in my tracks when I see Cade standing in the hall looking at me while I hold a USB. Shit.
