Chapter Two

Jay

I went to my office to finish my notes about Miss Tate and had to laugh a little when I needed to blow my nose. I'm not sure what she sprayed on herself, but I'm clearly allergic.
I heard a knock on my door. "Come in."
Dave, my business partner, walked in with a smile on his face. "What's got the girls laughing so hard?"
I shook my head and smiled. "Miss Tate, she was quite the patient."
"Ah, she's a hard one to forget. Gorgeous as the day is long, even old' Doc Emery struggled with that one."
"Because she's so damn funny?" I asked.
"No, she's gorgeous, he used to call her a hot little number. Days like today make me regret being a pediatrician instead of an OBGYN."
"Yeah, she was pretty cute." I agreed.
"Cute? She's stunning and the daughter of Calvin Tate, she comes from big money."
"You mean her father has money, she seemed down to earth. Well, in a little bit of a crazy chick kind of way." I had to laugh a little.
"I've never had the pleasure of speaking with the woman. Anyway, Tony wants us to meet him at a new club tonight."
"Haven't you grown out of the club scene yet? I feel like they should have a special geriatric section for us." I said.
"You're 32, not 72. Come on, it'll be fun." He begged.
The last time he said that I woke up next to a busty blond named Tiffany, and she wouldn't stop calling for a week.
"I don't know, a quiet Friday night sounds good to me." I spoke.
"I'll pick you up at eight, be ready." He turned and left while he completely ignored my response. He typically does that as a sign that I do not have a choice in the matter.
Taking a job at the same practice as my med school buddy, might have been a real mistake. I just moved back to town after a few years in New York. I've never been a fan of the big city, a smaller town like Louisville is perfect. Well, it's also my hometown, so it's nice to be around family again.
My last visit of the day was my newest obstetrics patient. This is the best part of my job, gynecology is fine, but my heart is really into obstetrics. There's something about helping new life into this world, it really gives my life meaning.
Dave and Tony showed up at my apartment right on time, and we headed to the newest club in Louisville. Of course, I volunteered to drive. I don't need to drink and have a repeat performance of the last time we went out. As I looked around the club it just made me feel old. There were plenty of people, but most were just kids, really. There were plenty of early twenty-somethings, but not many on the mature side.
The night was a complete and total bust. Tony and Dave had no problems with the young ones, but I just brushed them off. My wild were oats already sewn, so I was more interested in something serious. A genuine person that would make me laugh and give me a challenge. I took the guys and their hookups home, then was relieved to finally crawl in bed, alone this time.
The next day, I was excited to be on the farm. Dad had another filly a few days ago, and he said she looked real promising. We've bred and raced horses for years, and my time in New York took me from my first love.
"Jay!" Mom rushed out to hug me like usual.
"Where's Dad?"
"Out in the barn, like always. Skye gave us a real beauty Wednesday." She said as she walked me toward the barn.
"Hey there old man." I spoke up when I saw him brushing out Moon's dark hair.
"Hey there son, how was work this week?"
I thought of the funny little brunette from the day before.
"Entertaining." I chuckled. He and mom both gave me a blank look.
"That's just not right, son."
I shook my head. "Never mind." I guess that's not how an OBGYN should describe his work.
"Honey, just so you know, and to avoid any surprise, Claire stopped in hoping you would be here." Mom informed me.
I grabbed a brush and started helping dad with Moon's brush down. "What did she want?"
"She didn't say, but I did tell her I'd give you her phone number. She said she really wants to talk."
"Well, there's not much to say now is there?" I acted like I didn't care, but inside I'm screaming. Seeing my former fiancé that cheated, isn't my idea of a good time, especially when she cheated with my own cousin.
"She probably just wants to make sure things won't be awkward at the wedding." She said.
Nothing in this world could make this wedding more awkward. She cheated with my cousin, the groom's brother.

Nora

"Elle, you're beautiful. The dress fits perfectly, and everything is going to be great." Her friend Claire said as I watched from the sofa.
My cousin was getting married the following weekend, and we were getting our final fittings. Her friend Claire seemed nice enough, and the rest of the bridesmaids were her two sisters and mine. Nothing could make this wedding more awkward. I once slept with the groom a few years ago, but Elle had no idea. It's not my fault, they didn't even know each other at the time. To make things worse, Kevin wanted a relationship, but I had no interest, and he still gives me weird looks to this day.
I was the maid of honor, but Claire has made things easy for me since she is a party planner and put everything together for me. The bachelorette party was a night to remember, or rather, one to never speak of again.
Jessica is Elle's sister, and she knows my dark history with Kevin, but won't say a word. We are cut from the same cloth, and almost inseparable since birth.
Everyone says I'm too restless for my own good, but I think they're all just boring. I was a true crime reporter for a cable news network at the time, and I also vlogged about cold cases on my own YouTube channel. I'm also a photographer, but mostly just amateur.
Elle finally smiled and it pulled at my heartstrings, so I grabbed my camera and started snapping shots. I couldn't pass up the opportunity, she looked so lovely in her gown. I could see the hope in her eyes, and I didn't have the heart to tell her there's no such thing as happy endings. Well, unless you're a guy and visit the massage parlor on 12th street. I heard they give some happy endings, but it’s mostly men that visit those places.
Before long, it was my turn, then we all went out for lunch and some shopping. Sunday after the wedding, I was expected in Miami for a story. While I was there, I was going to check out an old case from 1968.
"You all have to hear what Nora did this week!" Jessica laughed.
"Shut up!" I elbowed her, but she went on with the story. The girls laughed way too hard at my expense.
"You need something sexy for the rehearsal dinner," Elle said to me and wiggled her eyebrows. "Maybe a new body spray?" They all laughed again.
"I have plenty of dresses, and you guys can't tell me you don't do the same thing before seeing the gyno."
They all shook their heads no, but they're lying. All girls do a little extra grooming, don't they?
"I have you walking with Kevin's hot as hell cousin, so you have to turn up your hotness volume a little bit." Her eyes are lit up. "Be prepared and forget the body spray."
I'm never going to live that down! Claire rolled her eyes, but just kept scoping out the racks. What was that about?
We finished our shopping, then I went home. I was glad for a quiet night at home before a few days trip to New York with my father. He wanted me with him to pick up some new art he bought, because my mother was busy helping my aunt with the last details of the wedding. I was sure he just really wants to have a talk; he was tired of my globetrotting and lifestyle. Dad charted a private jet for our trip.
I really was blessed in the parental department. Dad is loving and usually the life of the party. My mom is the same, so I have to admit I have a good family life.
Morning came early, and I was sitting on the jet at the ass crack of dawn. "Are there any new young men in your life I should know about?" He asked as we sat in the jet.
"Pfft, not unless you count my new doctor." That's the most action I had seen in a long time.
"A doctor you say?" He grinned, and I shook my head.
"No, I was just teasing. Nothing is new, fortunately."
"Maybe if you would shed that restlessness and stay planted for a while, you'd meet someone."
I scoffed. "You saw how my last relationship ended, no thank you." I shook my head.
"Umm yeah, he proposed, Nora. That's what men do when they fall in love." He gave me a strange look.
"Exactly!" I said, and he laughed.
"One of these days a man will come along and tame you." He spoke with a smile on his face.
"That's exactly what I avoid. I don't want to be tamed, I like my life the way it is, Dad."
He shook his head. "That globetrotting will end one of these days. You're 28 years old, it's time to settle down."
"Why, so I can be bred and make you a bunch of little heirs to run your company?"
"Be bred?" He laughed. "No, I don't entertain the thought of my daughters doing any kind of breeding."
"Good, cause this one is off the market. I can't risk another one getting attached. The last one cried, and that's just too much."
"He spent 75 grand on a ring and proposed in front of his entire family, of course he cried." Dad glared at me.
"It wasn't my fault; I was taken completely by surprise." I defended. "The next time a guy asks you for your blessing, just slap him back into reality for me, okay?"
