Chapter 2

Dylan

Age 15

It’s summer and today is one of the hottest days. My parents have been fighting a lot and I can’t stand listening to them screaming at each other anymore. I slip on a pair of swim trunks, pull on a t-shirt and some shoes. I grab my backpack, stuff some clean clothes and a towel in it then walk out of my room.

“Where the fuck are you going?” My dad practically yells at me.

“Don’t talk to him like that!” Mom shouts.

“I’m going to Katie’s.” I tell them.

“Okay honey.” Mom smiles. “Have fun.”

I go outside and grab my bike that’s leaning up against the house. I pedal to Katie’s house and by the time I get there I’m soaked with my own sweat. I lean my bike against their porch railing and walk up the stairs, knocking on the door.

“Coming!” I hear Katie shout. The door opens a minute later, and my eyes widen. Katie’s strawberry blonde hair is flowing down her back and her bright blue eyes sparkle in the sunlight. She’s barefoot and has on a pair of jean shorts and a bright pink bikini top. When did she get boobs? When did she become so pretty? Why do I even care?

“Hi Dylan.” She smiles.

“Um…hey.”

“I didn’t know you were coming over today.” She says, stepping inside so that I can come into her cool air-conditioned house.

“I was hot.” I tell her.

“Yeah, I can see that, and smell that.” She jokes, smiling.

“Your parents’ home?” I ask her.

“No. They went to the store.”

“Wanna swim?”

“Okay.” We walk through her house to the backyard and she opens up the glass door.

“Oh, let me grab some towels.” She runs back inside, and I strip off my sweat filled t-shirt. I hop into the pool and sigh against the cool water. Katie comes back out with two towels in her hands and she puts them down on a lounge chair.

“You coming in?” I ask her, leaning my arms against the pool.

“Yeah.” She nods. She unbuttons her shorts and slides them down her legs. I try not to stare. She’s my best friend and I love her but not like that. I shouldn’t want to kiss her. That’s just…gross and… wrong. She jumps in, splashing me and comes up from under the water, laughing.

“You should have seen your face when I jumped.” She laughs. “You looked like a scared little boy.”

“I did not.” I splash her with some water, and she squeals.

“Dylan!” She jumps at me and pushes on my shoulders so that I go underwater. When I come back up, she’s laughing manically and sitting down at the edge of the pool. I swim towards her and put my hands down on either side of her legs. I grin at her and grab her wrists, pulling her back into the pool.

“Holy shit Dylan!” She laughs. “When did you get so strong?”

“I didn’t, you’re just weak.”

“Am not!” She argues. I swim over to her and lift her up in my arms. She lets out a squeak and grips onto my shoulders.

“Yes, you are, but it’s okay Kitty. I’ll protect you.” She blushes and I lean my head towards hers. She gasps and just as my lips are about to touch hers the door slams open.

“Katie!” Her dad yells. She jumps out of my arms and quickly gets out of the pool.

“H…Hi dad, I didn’t hear you come home.” She says.

“Go help your mother with the groceries.” He tells her.

“Okay.” She grabs a towel and quickly runs into the house.

“Dylan.” Her dad, Billy says.

“Yes?” I ask, getting out of the pool.

“What the fuck were you doing with my daughter?”

“Nothing. I promise. We were just swimming.”

“She’s only fourteen Dylan. She doesn’t need any boys trying to kiss her. Even if that boy is you. I know you two have known each other for years now. You two are best friends. I’d hate to see her get her heart broken and lose her best friend in the same day.”

“I wouldn’t hurt her.” I tell him.

“Well, I can’t take that chance Dylan. Don’t try to kiss my daughter again. You understand me?”

“Yes sir. I’m sorry.”

“Mmm.” He grunts. He sighs and runs his fingers through his hair. “Come on, Chelsea’s about to make lunch.”
