Chapter 13 - Interviews

Nathalie’s POV:

I am dressed in an appropriate dress reaching just above my knees. The dress is a light blue and my hair has been styled by several hairstylists and my makeup done. I still have not gotten used to all these people caring about my look but for today’s interviews, I have to look like a doll. At least that’s how I am feeling. The first 3 interviews weren’t bad they all asked about what I thought of Monaco and what it had been like to learn I was a princess. I answered all of their questions and I made sure to smile through it all. However, now I am waiting for the final interview. The one with the questions from the public. The questions could be about anything, and that makes me nervous.

A journalist walks in and bows before me.

“Your Highness, it’s a pleasure meeting you. My name is Alain Badeaux and I have with me some questions from the public,” he says while smiling. He has a reassuring smile and I can see that the smile reaches his eyes. It helps calm my nerves a bit.

“It’s nice to meet you too Mr. Badeaux, and please call me Nathalie I still haven’t gotten used to all of the formalities,” I tell him while smiling at him and shaking his hand.

“Thank you, Nathalie. I can understand that it has been quite a change. Are you prepared to answer some of the questions I have with me today?” he asks me.

“Of course. Ask away,” I tell him while still smiling.

“Alright, I am gonna start off by giving you the name of who asked the question and then followed by the question,” he tells me.

I simply nod and prepare myself for the questions, fearing all of the personal questions that might be.

“Great. The first question is from Brice, 7 years old and he would like to know what your favorite food is,” he tells me.

Instantly I relax and find my smile broadening. I didn’t expect the questions to be from children, so I am relieved and grateful for the question.

“Well, Hello to you Brice and thank you for your question. My favorite food is pizza. I have always loved it and one time I ate pizza for lunch and dinner for an entire week. I was on vacation with my family so it was okay. But I will always be hungry for a pepperoni pizza.” I tell the journalist and also Brice since I know that the interviews are televised and will be broadcast later on.

“Pizza is always a good choice and I am sure little Brice will be looking for the best pepperoni pizza as soon as he hears your answer. The next question is from Adrienne and she is 11 years old. She writes:” Hello Princess Nathalie. I would like to ask you what you want to be when you grow up if you weren’t the princess. I want to be an astronaut,“” Mr. Badeaux tells me. This question is a little bit harder for me, as it reminds me of my planned future that I will never be able to achieve. But I maintain my smile.

“Hello to you Adrienne. That is a great question, and I am sure you will become an excellent astronaut someday. Before I learned that I would become a princess I had a plan. I wanted to become a teacher. I have always believed that a great teacher is one of the most important things for a child. A teacher is there for the kids, to help them learn, to help them grow, to help them become the best version of themself. I wanted to be one of the teachers that would listen to their students, be interested in what they are saying and help guide them. So I encourage all of you kids to always follow your dreams, be the best version of yourself that you can be. And listen to your parents, you might not think that they are right all the time. Sometimes they won’t be right but they have been where you are and they have learned things that you have yet to learn. They are only trying to help you.” I finish and although I am smiling inside I’m sad. Sad about the future I won’t have. Sad that I won’t experience what others my age will.

“Excellent answer. Then we have a question from Remi age 14, and she would like to know what you miss the most about your life before you became a princess,” he says and I can see a sad smile on his face.

“That is an easy question to answer Remi. I miss my family the most. By moving here I won’t see them as often as I am used to. I have a sister who is only 10 years old. I am going to miss seeing her every day and being there for her. But luckily I am only a phone call away so I will make sure to call her. But at the same time, I am glad that I got the chance to learn about my family’s heritage. I never knew much about my father’s side of the family and know I do. ” I answer him and now I can’t hide the slightly sad look in my eyes. But I still smile.

“Well, we are glad that you are here and we look forward to seeing you become a wonderful princess and someday queen of our country,” he tells me.

“We have one final question from Dorian who is 5 years old. I think he heard that you also speak Danish, so he would like to know how you say “you are beautiful” in Danish. I think there is a compliment in there for you Nathalie,” he tells me while slightly laughing at the end.

I laugh a bit with him and answer the question.

“You are correct Dorian I do speak Danish. Danish is my first language but I have been fluent in English since I was 8 years old and during the last two years I have also become fluent in French and Italian. But I will answer your question on how to say you are beautiful in Danish and if there is a compliment there Dorian, then thank you. I am sure you are a very handsome little boy so make sure to treat the girls right,” I answer Dorian with a little laugh at the end.

“In Danish you say “Du er smuk”. If you plan on wooing any girls with that line you can always practice and make it perfect. And if you would like me to say anything else in Danish you just let me know and we will figure something out.” I finalize the question with a lesson in Danish.

“That is quite impressive. Four languages, I would like to be able to speak all of those languages. But for now, perhaps you can help me learn how to say “Thank you for your time, Your Highness,” in Danish?” Mr. Badeaux asks me.

“Well in Danish you would say “Mange tak for din tid, Deres Højhed” and your welcome and thank you for the lovely questions,” I tell him.

“Wow I am not sure I will be able to say that but I will try. Mang tak fore deen tid, Deres Hohed. How did I do?” he asks me while laughing.

“Not bad, but not quite there yet. You might have to practice a bit.” I tell him while laughing along with him.

“Yeah, I think you’re right. Thank you very much, Princess Nathalie, but unfortunately, we don’t have time for the rest of the questions today,” he tells me now smiling.

“Of course. Do you think I could get the rest of the questions along with the senders? I would like to answer the rest of them as well,” I ask him while smiling.

“I’m sure we can make that happen,” he answers with a broader smile now.

“Thank you,” I tell him and with that, the interviews are done. I can slightly relax and finally relax completely back at the palace.

I don’t call it home yet, because it isn’t. My home is still in Denmark. But I am sure that after I have lived in Monaco for some time I will start to think of it as a home.

I am escorted out of the building and towards a car with guards surrounding it. Along the street, several citizens are gathered waving at me and smiling. I smile and wave at as many as I can before I reach the car. Once I am inside the car and the door closes I slump down in my seat. It’s been a long day and it’s not even 2 pm yet.

At the palace, Sir Bisalion is waiting for me again. He is standing outside like last time and I can only guess that he is here to tell me the King would like to see me.

“Your Highness, welcome back. if you would please follow me the King would like to see you,” he tells me while turning and walking into the palace. I guess I was right. Off to the visit the King we go I slightly scoff to myself.

Again we arrive at Florestan’s office and again Sir Bisalion knocks on the door and Florestan tells us to enter.

“Nathalie! Great interview. Come sit down,” he tells me.

I am finally traveling back to Denmark today. I miss my calm high school life so I’m going to have to enjoy the next few months before I move to Monaco.

Already I can see the changes. Before my coronation, I only had a few guards traveling with me. Now, I have 40. When I discussed the extensive amount of guards with Sir Bisalion he only said that the new head of my security wanted to keep me safe. Then he added that he couldn’t agree more with the head of security. I haven’t even met the head of my security and I won’t get to meet him until I’m back in Monaco.

For now, I’ll just have to get used to the guards. All 40 won’t have to work at the same time, but there’ll be at least 15 guards at work at the same time. 5 following me and 10 protecting my mother’s house and the school. It’s completely ridiculous, but I at least made the deal that they don’t follow me around inside the school. However, they’ll still be stationed around the school to keep an eye on me. I just hope that nobody notices them.

The car is finally turning down the street to my mother’s house and when we park outside I recognize Kat’s bike that is parked in the driveway.

Dear god. With her here my ears will not be attached to my head by the end of the night. She can talk for hours and I just know that she is going to be questioning me about everything that’s happened.

As I step through the door I can hear feet running towards me.

“Nutty! You’re home!” my sister screams while jumping at me. I catch her and instantly I smile.

“Yes, Selene. I’m home again,” I tell her while smiling at her and spinning her around as she giggles.

“Nathalie! Finally, you’re here so I can scold you for not telling me sooner that you’re a freaking princess. I mean come on. I’m you’re best friend. We tell each other everything,” Kat says to me while faking being mad. I can see right through her so I know she is not really mad.

“I’m her sister and she didn’t tell me,” Selene says to Kat and I smile at that. My sister means everything to me and if I could I would have told her everything sooner. I would’ve also told Kat and my parents a lot sooner. But I couldn’t.

“It’s good to see you to Kat. And you know I couldn’t tell anyone anything. Not even you Selene,” I tell them while smiling. Even though I was only in Monaco for a week this time, I always miss my family including Kat.

I now see my mom walking towards us and she instantly embrace me while I’m still holding Selene.

“I’m happy you’re home again,” my mom tells me while smiling and hugging me.

“Group hug!” Kat exclaims as she embraces us and we all start laughing. Kat is practically part of our family and my mom thinks of her as a third daughter. I love how close we are. We’re all used to her just showing up and it’s become such a normal thing over the years.

We finally untangle ourselves from the hug and I put down Selene.

“So, how many guards did they send back with you?” my mom asks me while raising one eyebrow.

“Uhh, did you say guards? Are they hot?” Kat says while wiggling her eyebrows at me. At this, I simply laugh.

“Is the weird one with them?” Selen exclaims while jumping up and down. I turn to Kat first and answer her

“There are 40 of them and I don’t know Kat. I haven’t really taken a look at them. I was more focused on seeing you again. You know I can’t go long without seeing your beautiful face. So the last week has just been horrible without you,” I tell her with a bit of sarcasm in my voice.

“Don’t I know it. I mean who wouldn’t love to see my pretty face?” she says joking and I laugh at this.

“What weird guard are you talking about Selene?” I ask my little sister.

“The one I talked to at your ball. He was really funny but also weird,” she says while smiling.

“Well, what is his name? I can ask the guards if you want me to?” I tell her.

“His name is Raphael. He is tall and has brown hair,” she answers back while still smiling. But at the name, I stop in my tracks. I haven’t heard that name in a long time and I’ve been trying not to think so much of him. To think that he was at the ball and I didn’t get to see him. It makes me really sad. I know I never really got to know him, but he has a calm personality that I could really use in my situation right now. But I know for sure that he is not amongst the guards that are in Denmark with me. I simply would have seen him if he was. My mother brings be out of my thoughts.

“Well, where did you leave the guards? Are they still standing outside?” my mom asks me.

“I think so. Maybe some of them have started moving their stuff into their house.” I tell my mom.

“They have their own house?” my mom asks me.

“Yeah, I think they bought the Davis’ house next door. You know the one that’s been for sale for the last 6 months.” I tell her while scrunching my face. The Davis’ were this really old couple that everyone was afraid of. I remember when I was a kid I would imagine Mr. Davis standing in their living room window and just staring at me when I walked by on the street. Now, I don’t really remember if that ever happened but it still gives me the creeps just thinking about it. I shiver at that thought.

“Oh, alright. Well, I suppose I won’t have to cook for all of them,” my mom says and looks at me with the last statement.

“No, you don’t have to do that. They can probably do that on their own. Although I haven’t really asked them. I’ll go do that now,” I tell them and turn around and walk outside to the cars again. I see the guards carrying lots of suitcases and other boxes into the Davis’ house. So I guess I was right about them moving in there. I see the man I think is their leader standing by one of the cars, talking on his phone.

“Yes Sir. Yes, we have arrived and the princess has safely made it inside her home,” he says to whoever is on the other end of the line.

There is a short pause as whoever is on the other end of the line says something.

“I understand sir. I will keep you posted,” he says and he hangs up the phone. He turns in my direction and I walk closer to him.

“Hi. Sorry, I don’t think we’ve been properly introduced yet. My name is Nathalie,” I tell him while extending my hand in his direction. He has dark red hair with a hint of brown and is probably in his 40′s.

“Of course, Your Highness. I do apologize for not introducing myself to you. My name is Gerard Jacobs and I will be the head of this division of your protection detail,” he tells while bowing instead of shaking my extended hand. I quickly retreat my hand.

“Oh, you don’t have to bow to me or call me anything fancy. Please just call me Nathalie. That would make me feel so much better. Can I call you Gerard?” I smile at him while talking to him. If I can delay the time where everyone will be calling me by my title I would like that.

“Of course Your H... I mean Nathalie. And yes please call me Gerard. Is there anything I can do for you?” he asks me. He almost called me by my title, but I guess it’s going to take some getting used to.

“I just wanted to ask you if there is anything I can do to help or if you need anything?” I ask him while looking at the many boxes that the men are carrying in.

“No, thank you for the offer though. However, I couldn’t make you do that even if we did need the help. It would be against every protocol,” he tells me and I guess he is right. I might not know a whole lot about the royal lifestyle just yet, but I have never heard of a princess helping her guards move into a house. Although I wouldn’t really mind helping them.

“Well, alright then. I guess I’ll see you tomorrow when I have to go back to school,” I smile at him while talking to him and I see that almost all of the boxes have been carried inside by now.

“Of course, Nathalie. We will make sure to keep out of sight. However, you will be driven to the school in one of our cars and the guards will drop you off at the entrance. That was part of the agreement,” he tells me while also smiling at me.

“Yeah, I remember. Well, thank you and just come knock on the door if you guys need anything,” I tell him and then turn around to walk inside.

I guess I’ll just have to wait and see how tomorrow will go. I just hope none of my classmates know who I am and that I won’t be the center of attention.
