I didn’t sleep too well. It was on and off for the rest of the night, I hated it. I also hated the fact that every time, I woke up alone. Oliver wasn’t there anymore, I felt bad about kicking him out before because even though he can be an ass about things, I liked to have his company more than nothing.

I kept still, watching Nia move around the bed with her clipboard after she helped with my daily exercises.

“Why am I always tired? More than usual, I can tell.”

“Because you’re not as active as you used to be. You’re body’s slowly drowning out because it’s not getting all the bits and bolts as it used to,” she said without looking up at me. “It’s alright. For now as you heal, you can’t do anything but let your body do what it needs. After a week or so, you should be able to start walking again, maybe sooner but never push through the pain. If it hurts, go no further,” she glanced to me with soft eyes as I nodded lightly, looking to the doorway as I notice my mother walking my way.

No, I whimpered mentally. I can’t deal with her right now, I don’t want to have to either.

“Just continue resting for the time being. If Oliver comes and asks to take you away again, please do not go along,” she said, making me crack a small smile as she made her out and Mum made her way in.

“You look much better, Sweetheart,” she said, sitting down beside me and crossing her leg over the other.

What do you want? I wanted to ask but I didn’t want to put her in a bad mood and get myself hurt in the process.

“Just here to inform you that, well,” she took a shallow breath, holding her hands on her knee and giving me a light look, telling me it wasn’t anything good for me at all but she was going to do it anyway. “I’m moving out. Your father and I have come to terms and talked about this.”

“You’re getting a divorce?”

“Sort of,” she raised a brow, her eyes down but she didn’t look bothered whatsoever. “Not by the court, by our own terms. Legally we’ll still be married but we won’t be thinking like that, will we?” She smiled softly but I didn’t find this funny or nice. “We’re splitting expenses and everything else apart from you. I take full custody until you’re eighteen and you can do whatever you like,” she waved a hand to say whatever as I swallowed.

What’s the catch?

“Where are you moving? When?”

“This is where it all gets a little tricky. Your father wanted you to stay but I wanted you to come so we agreed that you’ll continue to go to your friend’s place until you’re all sorted. Then you’ll come to New York… where I will be,” she paused for a moment there as my eyes went wide.

“New York?!”

“Sweetheart, it’ll be the finest opportunity you’ll have for a while. I leave tomorrow and I’ll see you soon,” she smiled softly, getting up. “Your father’s arranging for your things to be shipped over in the meantime and I’ll have it all set up for you when you arrive.”

“Mum,” I croaked, shaking my head as I felt my heat thud in my throat. “I can’t go to New York.”

“Oh yes you can and girl, you will,” she replied, touching her hand down to my leg. “Stop the tears. You’re a big girl now, the change will be good for you.”

“How would you know?”

“Because when I was your age I moved here, didn’t I? Now, I’m ready to go home,” her voice softened for that as I looked away from her, remembering the times she told me about her travels. Her mother sent to her a boarding school here, she left everything and started from scratch. She met my father, she got pregnant and was kicked out of the school so she moved in with Dad.

Now everything was breaking apart.

“It’s not my home.”

“No, but it will. I’m off now, be good and I’ll see you in a few weeks,” she said, coming down to kiss my head before she was walking out. My chest hurt and my head dizzied the more I thought about it.

Was she seriously going to take me away from my life here? My friends? My school? My job?

Liam?

Oliver?

There’ll never be anyone in New York like them, I thought, more tears coming to my eyes as I turned into the pillow, pulled the duvet over my shoulders.
