Chapter 1

Part One: Dream Girl

~Chapter 1~

There is absolutely no better place for a week-long vacation than Walt Disney World. At least that’s what the travel blog said that brought me to the reservation site. And I’m finally here! Disney World. I remember how when my two sisters and I were younger, our parents took us every Christmas for a weekend in December. I’m pretty sure that out of the three of us, I’m the only one that remembers the trips so vividly. Disney is a place to reunite with your inner child and embrace that part of yourself.

My red Jimmy Choos hit the pavement outside of the Contemporary Resort. I close the door of my purple Nissan 350z and lock it as the beep of the horn confirms it to all observing bystanders. Suddenly, I see him. He has light brown hair, blue eyes, and a smile that could melt butter. Wearing a beige sweater and a pair of blue jeans, he starts walking toward me. The silver chain around his neck catches the gleam of the mid-afternoon sunlight, making his blue eyes shine like the ocean under moonlight.

“Jeremy!” I say as he reaches out to hug me, my voice bubbles with excitement.

“Long time, no see,” he replies, his Kentucky accent tickling my eardrums.

Then, much like clockwork, I see a good friend from high school step out of his yellow Saturn Sky. He has curly blond hair and green eyes. He’s walking toward Jeremy and I, almost as if he’s unsure if I’ll recognize him. It is then that I realize I’ve been hugging Jeremy much too long for two people who are only acquaintances.

I wave as Jeremy and I separate slowly and he starts walking faster wearing a white button down shirt with a white undershirt, blue jeans, and flip flops.

Jeremy cuts the awkward silence with a defensive but curious, “Who is that?” as he follows my eye line.

“My good friend from high school, Pete Young,” Pete finally makes it to where we’re standing and quickly embraces me, the sensation of his touch jolting my heart rate to life.

He whispers in my ear, “I’ve missed you.”

Surprised but without a thought, I quickly say, “Same here.”

I don’t know if I should have invited two attractive males on the same trip but my interest in both of them isn’t enough. I wanted to get to know them better. I’ve been a fan of Jeremy since I was fourteen years old, and now that I’m 25, I still have to blink twice when I think about the fact that we are now acquaintances because we work in the same industry. As far as picking Disney to reunite with Pete, who I haven’t seen since I was seventeen, and we both were throwing our green graduation caps up in the air, there’s just a magic here that I knew would create a playful atmosphere that’s still romantic in order to figure out which guy is better suited for me. So far the trip is five days long because Jeremy mentioned he had a film he was starting sometime next week back in Los Angeles.

As I’m in line waiting to check in I take in the lobby of the Contemporary Resort around me. Filled to the brim with people of all ages and statures, the monorail is the central site as it passes right through the lobby above me. Mickey Mouse ear fixtures are placed in different places throughout the room, as well as upon the glass window looking out upon the exterior of the building on the side the monorail enters the building. An older couple sits in the faux brown wicker chairs looking at a Disney park map, probably deciding where they are going to eat dinner. Butterflies inhabit my own stomach as I can’t stop thinking about that electricity I felt when Pete hugged me. Why didn’t he ever ask me out in high school? All my cards were on the table and he went and asked out Lindsey Berkson. I wonder if he felt the spark between us earlier. As I’m finally at the desk waiting on the front desk clerk to give me my room key, I turn around to see Pete and Jeremy talking to one another. I hope they aren’t too upset that I invited them both on this trip.

“Hey Pete. I’m Jeremy.” Jeremy introduces himself to Pete by holding out his hand.

As Pete shakes his hand, I notice that Jeremy looks almost as if there’s an inside joke he hasn’t let Pete in on, an arrogance I’ve never witnessed from him before.

They exchange a few more words and Pete starts walking nonchalantly in the vicinity of the food court. The air between them seems anything but peaceful as Jeremy is still looking blatantly after Pete as he walks away probably shooting invisible rays of kryptonite from his eyes to the back of Pete’s head. Despite the intense look Jeremy has upon his face, Pete walks into the food court, unscathed.

The front desk clerk whose name tag reads Greta interrupts my discreet people watching and asks, “Ms. Cortez, do you have any questions about your reservation or vacation package?”

“Not at the moment, thank you,” I reply as she smiles at me, and hands me my room key.

“Thank you Jessica. Enjoy your stay,” she said. I smile at her and head for the glass elevator.

Once I insert my room key into my deluxe suite, I enter the room and practically feel as though I’m still here because the room looks just like my penthouse apartment back in LA in terms of size and furnishings without the same color theme. My penthouse back home has purple accents throughout but the furniture and rugs in my suite are standard to most hotels I’ve stayed at: cherry wood furniture and an off-white colored couch, with a small black coffee table on top of a multi-colored mouse-eared design throw rug. Next to the living area is a small kitchenette. I plop down on the fluffy couch cushion after dropping my luggage next to one of the bar stools in the kitchenette. “My home away from home.” I sigh before taking in the theme park view outside my picture length window.
