I hate him with a passion. Since I was in 5th grade, I’ve always found his personality annoying. Luckily I only knew him online. And he lived all the way in California. The chances of him moving to New York were like one in a kazillion. .. Okay apparently more like he did move to New York but that doesn’t mean I’ll run into him. Right?

How I met them

Ever since I was in the 4th grade, I knew I was into boys. I lost all my friends because of it. I’m not one to be dramatic but I struggled... BADLY.

Halfway through the school year, I downloaded social media. And that’s how I met my online friends. Ayanna, Danny, and Lexi. And then there’s him... Chris. I hated him. But, I didn’t want to ruin my friendship with Ayanna (who was his real-life best friend), so I put up with him for the sake of friendship. Do you ever want to punch somebody through the screen? Yeah. Whenever he starts talking (well.. technically texting), I want to strangle him.

We’ve been friends ever since then. We’re all in high school. And in two weeks, I start my third year.

Okay now onto the story.

I was awakened by the loud ringing of my iPhone alarm. Groaning, I turned over to my nightstand to grab my phone. The light nearly blinded me when I turned it towards me. I smacked the “snooze” button and started scrolling through my notifications.

“Seriously Anna, 87 notifications?” I chuckled. Ayanna, my online friend, had a habit of spamming me. I hovered my thumb over the invisible button at the bottom of my phone before pressing down on it. I scrolled through my apps until I found discord. I started reading through my messages. “OMG RIVER WAKE THE FUCK UP I’VE GOT BAD NEWS.” I scrolled up some more and saw things like “I'M GOING TO CRY. WAKE UP.” After seeing that, I immediately texted her “I’M AWAKE, WHAT’S WRONG??” I expected her to take a couple of hours to respond but as if on command, she sent “so like, I need you to talk to Chris because he’s mad at me” I let out a dramatic groan while rolling my eyes. I didn’t want to read a long ass paragraph of what happened, so I texted her “FaceTime me and tell me what happened.”

“RIVER OH MY GOD,” Ayanna screamed through the phone.

“Would you shut up for a second, I need to connect my AirPods,” I said. Anna was the loudest person I knew, so when we called I had to have some sort of earpiece connected. I sat up and grabbed my AirPods.

“Nice abs, daddy.” Ayanna laughed. Sometimes I forget she’s straight.

“You’re such the comedian,” I said. She rolled her eyes. At least she wasn’t upset anymore. “So wanna tell me what’s wrong,” I said, as I put an AirPod in my ear.

“Okay so..” Ayanna started to say. Her eyes began to water. I was a little shocked. Anna wasn’t the type to cry over a fight. My mind immediately went to the worst cases. I was close to Anna and when she has a bad moment, I have a bad day.

“Did you and Chris” I spat his name out in the nicest way I could. “Get into a fight?” I asked. Anna took a deep breath in and sniffled.

“Yeah..” she said. “But it was my fault!” She added, noticing the annoyance on my face. As hard as I tried being nice to Chris, I always came off as annoyed or fake. “And well.. he isn’t picking up my calls.” She said. Fuck you, Chris. I thought to myself. How dare he make his friend feel like this.

“It’s not like he’ll listen to me, ask Danny or Lexi, they’re his actual friends,” I said. I didn’t want to come off as rude but, I seriously didn’t want to talk to him.

“But if you text him, he’ll be more motivated to answer! He likes to tease you!” She whined. Well, shit. I’m not getting out of this. I sighed.

“That doesn’t even make sense.” I tried.

“Yes, it does! Because he likes to tease you, he’ll— AWE C’MERE BABY.” She screamed. Her dog, Stacy, jumped onto her bed. Stacy was a huge, fluffy white dog. She looked more like a Maine coon cat than a dog, to be honest. “She hi to ab daddy, Stacy.” She said in a baby voice. She directed the front camera to the huge dog. Stacy’s tongue hung out of her mouth (because she was panting in excitement).

“Hi, Stacy,” I said, going along with Ayanna.

“You wouldn’t say no to this cute face, would you?” Anna said, smooshing the phone against the dog’s face.

“Okay, okay.” I groaned. She pointed the camera back to her.

“Oh.. before you talk to him, just know the reason we fought is because he’s moving away..” Ayanna said with a sad tone in her voice. I honestly didn’t know how to feel about that. It didn’t affect me.

“Alright.. I’ll call you back later.” I sighed then hung up the phone. Oh God, imagine if he was moving next door. I thought to myself. I mean the chances of him moving to New York and then to this neighborhood.. basically impossible.

I went back to discord and scrolled through the usernames until I found Chris’s. I hated arguing over text, especially with Chris. So, I called him. And unfortunately for me, he picked up.

“Dude, what the fuck do you want.” He said. I hate to admit it, but his voice is hot. It had sounded like he had just woken up. Ew, don’t think like that.

“Can you go apologies to Ayanna?” I said. I didn’t want to make this a big thing at 9 in the morning.

“This again? Tell her that I don’t control these things.” He said, obviously aggravated.

“How about you tell her.”

“Why would I listen to you again?”

“Why are you always causing problems?”

“If problems are always caused around you, maybe you’re the problem.”

“Really? Cause they only seem to happen when I’m talking to you.” And for the next hour or so, we argued. You would think we would have better things to do. “Oh my God just stop,” I yelled.

“God, you’re emotional.” He spat.

“Where the hell are you moving anyway?” I asked. I was genuinely curious.

“New York.” Wait, what.

“Wait, for real?” I asked. He’s joking, right?

“Yeah, Queens..” he mumbled. To be honest, he wasn’t that bad of a person (not that I’ll ever admit that).

“That’s.. cool I guess.”

“Thanks..?” As awkward as that was, it had been one of the few times we talked and didn’t end up fighting. You know, his voice is dead ass hot— what the fuck. Since when I did think like this towards him??

“Oh, look at the time.. I should get going.” I rushed.

“Okay?” Chris said. I hung up the call as fast as I could.
