Chapter 7

I used Brock as my stage, swaying and dipping around him as I pushed him into my seat. I straddled his lap and dropped back, letting my hands run up the sides of my body. All eyes were on me, including Brock’s. I got up and made my way around to classroom, getting every guy in the room turned on. When I rounded to the front again, Bridgette stood with her mouth open.

Taking my hand and closing the other girl’s mouth, I smiled slyly. “Just because I’ve never had sex before doesn’t mean I won’t know what to do when the time comes.” The wolf whistles and howls backed up my statement. Bridgette snarled at me and went to her seat, properly chastised. I turned to Brock with a saucy wink and sauntered back to my desk.

“That was one hot as fuck performance, girl,” Brock whispered in my ear as he gave up my seat. “I’m having trouble walking here.” I blushed again and smiled, proud of myself for my boldness. I didn’t hear another word from Bridgette for the rest of class.

It didn’t take long for the school to be abuzz about my showdown with Bridgette. When I entered the lunchroom, loud applause along with howls and wolf whistles greeted me. I blushed and bowed. I giggled and made my way through the line to get food.

“Damn girl that was one hell of a performance,” a voice said behind me. Looking over my shoulder, I met the blue eyes of a gorgeous blond boy from my vocal class. “You got some seriously sexy moves.” He winked. I smiled back and paid for my lunch.

“Thanks! Tristan, right?” He nodded and followed me back to the table. We chatted for a few minutes and he made himself at home next to me. Brock saw us laughing and talking as he came in. A rush of what looked like anger flooded his face, making me confused. Why was he so mad to see me talking to another guy? We decided to be friends and I thought it was going well. Hm.

Slapping Ryder on the back, I pointed my chin toward the table. “Who’s the dude with Amber?”

“That’s Tristan Andrade. He’s in our vocal class. He’s got a pretty sweet tenor that would mesh well with Amber.” He smirked at me. “Looks like he wants to mesh more than his voice with her.” Snickering at the look of fury on my face, Ryder strode over to the table. Unable to contain my emotions, I left the cafeteria and made my way out to the bleachers by the football field.

Frustrated, I sat down trying to figure out what the hell was going on with my mind. The more time I spent with Amber, the more I found myself wanting to be with her. I thought more and more about her every day, wondering what it would be like to have her. I’d gotten several offers of sex but had turned down every one of them since our kiss. Rubbing my hand over my face, I realized what I had to do. I couldn’t fight my heart anymore. I had to woo Amber and make her mine in all ways.

It was time for my critique with Mr. Tanaka. Brock had disappeared during lunch without even saying hello. He took one look at me with Tristan and stormed off, leaving me confused. I would have to figure it out later. Right now, I needed to concentrate. Warming up my vocal cords, I looked around the auditorium hoping to see Brock. He wasn’t there. Maybe he’d forgotten his promise to be there. Maybe I had made him mad with my antics before Chemistry. He didn’t seem mad at the time.

Mr. Tanaka breezed in with his usual flamboyance, glasses perched on the end of his nose and his tablet in his hands. “Oh Amber, I’m so excited for you!” he crooned. “A chance to go to Berkeley College of the Performing Arts for FREE!” He patted my cheek affectionately and took his seat. He motioned for me to begin. Still no Brock. I took a deep breath and started the track Ryder had recorded for me.

Needless to say, I had Mr. Tanaka in tears. He was so moved by my performance, it took him a few minutes to gather his emotions to speak. Still no Brock. “Oh my God, Amber you have the voice of an angel! That song is incredible! I’ve never heard it sung like that before. Where on earth did you get such a gem?”

“Her JuJu used to sing it for the soldiers overseas when she toured with the USO,” Brock’s smooth baritone rang out from the back of the auditorium. I tried unsuccessfully to stifle a smile. He had come after all. “Sorry I’m late, beautiful! I got stuck in my last class.” He rushed up to the stage and scooped me up in a big hug. “You were amazing as always!”

“Amber darling,” Mr. Tanaka interrupted. “That is your song. I am always amazed at your beautiful voice and your impeccable tone but that song frees the true passion of the artist inside of you. I only have one thing to say.” He placed his bony pointer finger over his lips in thought.

“I told you there was nothing to worry about, babe! How about we go to Vito’s for some pizza? My treat.” He set me down, beaming from ear to ear.

“Oh,” I murmured. “I’d love to, Brock but I already said I’d meet Tristan for some ice cream.” I noticed his shoulders slump as his smile faded. Nodding his head, he backed away. “Can we go tomorrow? Would that be ok?” I asked, hopeful he would agree. I really hated to tell him no but I couldn’t stand Tristan up either.

“Yeah sure, Amber. We can do that.” He ran his fingers through his hair. “Well you don’t want to be late for your date so I’ll see you tomorrow.” He twirled his keys around his index finger as he walked away. I had the strange sensation I just made a mistake but I couldn’t fathom what that mistake was. I shook my head and got in my car to meet Tristan.
