Chapter 33

Sitting at the table amongst a mix of Sounders and Fury players, one hand on Apollo’s thigh, she did her best to stay awake. Coach Karina was congratulating her girls on playing with professionalism in the face of blatant brutality. Even Coach Lubeck congratulated them, saying how proud he was to be associated with such a fine group of world class athletes. There was more news to come. The Sounders just signed the Toronto Chiefs star player, Ethan Gray. When asked about the abrupt change in teams, Ethan simply cited ‘conflicts of interest’ to the press. Tess and Meda noticed Ethan didn’t play tonight. He wasn’t even seated in the players box. Whatever that conflict was, it must be a doozy to keep the Eagle off the ice.

Dinner finally came to a close and the players milled around the bar attached to the restaurant, relaxing over drinks. Some of the single players took advantage of the plethora of willing bunnies and hunks, Lucy being right in the middle of it all. “Damn that girl is insatiable,” Apollo laughed in Tess’s ear. Giggling, she let loose a yawn with a huffed sigh as she leaned back against him. “Tired, baby girl?”

“Mhm,” she murmured. “Would you be upset if I headed back up to the room? I can hardly keep my eyes open.” Apollo stroked her cheek and laid a kiss on her forehead.

“No babe, you go on ahead. I won’t be too far behind you. I want to talk to Ethan for a bit then I’ll be on up.” He gave her a tender, lingering kiss and escorted her to the elevators. “Get some sleep, beautiful. I love you.” A barely audible ‘I love you too’ made him smile as he watched the doors close, carrying his woman away to dreamland.

“It’s about time she left,” a husky voice sounded behind him. Whipping around, he came face to face with the redhead from his last trip. She eyed him hungrily, playing with the thin strap of her dress while she licked her lips. She stood blocking his exit, smoothing her skin tight too short dress over her curves. “Maybe we can finish where we left off last time, eh?”

“Uh, hate to break it to you sweetheart but I’m taken,” was the only thing he said as he tried to sidestep her to get away. He was looking around wildly trying to get anyone’s attention but his buddies were all occupied. The woman put a hand on his chest and slid it down his abs, stopping at his belt.

“Aw, how sweet. She doesn’t have to know. I won’t tell if you won’t,” she winked. Apollo backed away, grabbing her hand and removing it from his body.

“I said no thank you.” He was really trying to be a gentleman but this woman was making it hard. Why the fuck was she even here? He had a sneaking suspicion she was looking to cause trouble between him and Tess. Well fuck her and her delusions of grandeur. He placed his hands on her shoulders and moved her firmly to the side. Before he could let her go, she launched herself at him and covered his lips with hers. Her arms were like an octopus, winding around his neck as he struggled to get free.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” he shouted as he finally disentangled himself. Blake and Ethan flanked him from behind, having caught the shuffle out of the corner of their eye. “What part of no did you not understand?”

“Hey man, everything ok over here?” Blake turned his intense green eyes on the woman accosting his brother in law. “I saw Tess leave. She all right?” Apollo nodded, blowing out a big breath.

“Yeah she’s just beat after the game today. I wanted to speak to Ethan for a bit before calling it a night but I wish now I’d gone with her. Looks like this harpy was just waiting to pounce.” He scrubbed his hand over his mouth to try to remove the thick lipstick he was sure was caked on his lips. The woman rolled her eyes and cocked her hip to the side.

“Well, it looks like the rumors are true,” she giggled. “She must be something to turn your head, handsome.” Apollo looked her square in the eye.

“She is the most amazing, incredible woman I’ve ever met. I’m just the lucky bastard who gets to love her.” The woman smiled, genuinely this time.

“Good luck, Apollo. I hope it works out. Really.” Straightening her posture, she turned and walked back to the bar. Apollo could have sank to the floor in relief. Blake clapped him on the shoulder.

“Whoa,” Ethan muttered. “Dodged a bullet there, bro.” Apollo chuckled.

“No shit, man. I’m glad Tess wasn’t here to see that. I’m going to have to wash my mouth out with bleach before I kiss her again. Might even have to scrub my lips with steel wool to get all this fucking lipstick off.” The guys laughed and lead him back over to the opposite side of the bar from the harpy. “Seriously, I owe you guys my life.”

“Nah,” Blake chuckled. “Just a couple beers. Was that the woman from last year, the one Tess caught you with?” Apollo nodded, grimacing at the memory.

“Yeah. She’s pretty and all but she’s not my Tess. Now that I have the perfect woman, that one doesn’t even come close. None of them do.” The men chatted for a few more minutes as they finished their beers. Apollo congratulated Ethan on joining the team and left the bar. He decided not to risk the elevators, something in his gut telling him to take the stairs. Sure enough, the redhead was waiting by the shiny metal doors. She didn’t notice him and he was glad for it. The last thing he needed was another incident with her.

He headed toward the stairs, taking them two at a time to the eighth floor. Entering the hallway, he pulled out his keycard and opened into a dark room. He knew Tess was out like a light so he used the dim light from his phone screen to see his way in. After a quick shower and a check to make sure all traces of the harpy were gone, he climbed in the bed next to his slumbering girlfriend. He couldn’t help the smile as she rolled over and snuggled into his arms. Laying a kiss on her forehead, he closed his eyes to let sleep claim him.

He must have slept hard because when he opened his eyes next, the sun was peaking through the curtains. Tess was already up and by the sounds of running water, she was taking a shower. Stretching languidly, he yawned and scratched his chest. A loud screech sounded from the bathroom. Moments later, a very angry Tess was storming out in a billow of steam, his shirt from last night in her hand.

“You son of a bitch!” she screamed. She picked up the closest heavy object she could find and launched it at his head. Apollo jumped out of bed, a look of shock on his face.

“Tess what the hell babe?!” he yelled.

“Was it that redhead again?” Her eyes were flashing, her chest heaving in raging breaths. She was beyond pissed. “ANSWER ME, ASSHOLE!” Apollo rubbed his face, trying to shake the sleep haze from his brain.

“Whoa now, baby girl. Calm down and tell me what’s wrong. What did I do? I’m so fucking confused right now…and half asleep.” Tess stalked to his side of the bed and threw his shirt at him, hitting him in the face.

“It was her, wasn’t it?” Her beautiful face was now streaked with tears, her body trembling with rage. “How long did you wait before you fucked her?” Apollo’s eyes went wide with shock. Looking down at his shirt, he saw what had turned Tess into a raging wild woman. Closing his eyes, he exhaled heavily. A bright red smear of lipstick. That fucking bitch. She had turned up just to cause trouble. Well, she picked the wrong guy to fuck with.
