Chapter 26 - Three Is A Crowd

Quinn POV

I couldn’t believe it. Kyanite had come up with an idea which could not only help save humanity, but save my own life in the process. Part of me wished that it was Jayce that came up with the idea so I could hug him, kiss him, thank him.
All we needed now was amber from the bears and Cassius and Gretchen would be able to tweak the protection cuff to my needs. Then finally we would be able to go after the witch.

“So who’s going to Yo-Na to collect the amber?” Gretchen asked.

“I’ll go” I answered, “Norah knows me. I saved her life. They will trust me”

Jayce cleared his throat next to me and I looked at him.

“What?” I asked.

“You stay here. If you give Norah the heads up then I’ll go...and Kyanite will come with me”

Did I just hear correctly?

I raised my brow and looked across the table at Kyan. He didn’t seem surprised or bothered by Jayce’s bizarre request. Had I missed something?
Gretchen laughed and Jayce shot her a look over the table.

“Why can’t I go?” I asked.

“Jayce is worried the moment you walk into that bear den you’ll be greeted with the next love of your life” Gretchen snorted.

Oh.

“Jayce” Moira started, “There are so few bears left in the world that it would be extremely unlucky for Quinn to have a true bear mate”

“Or lucky, depending on how you look at it” Gretchen muttered, “It could happen. I’ll go with them. Safety in numbers and such”

My wolf and panther stirred in unison at the thought of Gretchen alone in the forest with both of my mates. Did she think I was stupid? Did she think I would just roll over that easily? I was the fucking Queen.

“No. You won’t go” I said, shooting her down.

Gretchen stared at me blankly. Seriously, the nerve of this woman. Like, who even are you?

“No. It totally makes sense for me to go” she continued, a pushy tone to her voice.

I leant forward in my chair, my forearms resting on the table in front of me. Gretchen crossed her arms in front of her chest and leant back. She cocked her head to the side, waiting for me to bite.

“You’re not going Gretchen”

“Why?”

I sighed.

“Because I don’t fucking trust you”

The she-wolf laughed, throwing her head back in exaggeration. She looked at me like I was an idiot and it made my blood boil. The energy in the room took an uncomfortable shift.

“I’ve done nothing but try to help you, Quinn” she growled.

And try to steal my mate” I bit back.

Gretchen feigned a look of surprise and disbelief, as if I’d just called her out with the most ludicrous accusation ever.

“Jayce and I use to be a thing, get over it. You don’t have to worry about it now”

I rolled my eyes.

“Oh trust me. I’m not worried about it but I still don’t trust you. You’re not going”

“Jayce. Tell your Luna that you promise to keep your hands to yourself...”

“Gretchen!”

Cassius slammed his fist down on the table and glared at his sister.

Brother?” She groaned, rolling her eyes from me over to him.

“It’s Alpha, Gretchen. And might I remind you, that is your Queen that you are talking to. Drop the attitude”

Gretchen pouted but I could see she was pissed off and somewhat embarrassed by her little brother giving her a dressing down. The she-wolf pushed her chair back and stood up.

“If you’ll excuse me. I need some fresh air” she muttered and left the table.

Thank goddess for that.

I looked to Jayce and lowered my voice, not that it really mattered with a wolf’s hearing but I wanted to make a point that this interaction was private. Most seemed to get the point and started talking quietly amongst themselves.

“Is that really why you don’t want me going to Yo-Na? Because you think I’ll have a bear mate too?”

Just one look into Jayce’s eyes told me that Gretchen had been right. I’d be lying if I said it hadn’t crossed my mind too.

“Jayce...ok, I won’t go. I’ll call Norah and see if there is another way around it. But you’re not going with Kyanite. You’ll kill each other”

Jayce went to argue but then thought better of it.

Smart move.

“Ok. Speak to Norah. She might know another way”

I excused myself from the room and walked out the back door of the pack house, phone in hand to make a call to my bear friend.

“He’ll never share you, you know?”

I turned around to see Gretchen leaning against the the back of my pack house.

“I never asked him to”

“But you will”

I narrowed my gaze. Gretchen seemingly unaffected. Nothing about me intimidated her, or if it did then she was a bloody good actress.

“Not that it’s any of your business...but, no, I won’t. Jayce has all of me. He knows that. Now if you don’t mind” I said, turning around, “I have a call to make”

“One day you’ll slip up. You’ll give in to the panther and you’ll break Jayce’s heart; and when you do...I’ll be there to pick up the pieces”

I moved incredibly fast, lightning fast. Before Gretchen had time to blink I grabbed her around the throat, lifting her feet off the ground and slamming the back of her head against the wall. The she-wolf tried to make a sound but my grip tightened around her neck, causing her lips to go a lovely shade of blue.

“Listen here, you skanky bitch-faced home wrecker” I hissed, “I am Jayce’s Luna. We are mates, true mates. He will never look at you the way he looks at me. Until yesterday I’d never even heard him mention your name. You are nothing. Its my name that he shouts right before he cums. It’s my chest he falls asleep on every night...not yours”

Gretchen weakly clawed at my hands, trying to loosen my grip. I wondered how long it would take for her to stop breathing all together? Twenty seconds? A minute maybe? Gretchen’s hands went limp, her blood shot eyes rolling back in her head.

That’s probably enough.

I let go, watching the she-wolf drop to the ground. Within seconds she started gasping for air. She opened her eyes, pupils dilated with fear as she looked at me, smiling down at her.

“Now. If you don’t mind, I need to make a phone call. Clean yourself up, you look a mess”

I turned my back to the pathetic excuse for a wolf and walked away. Somehow I had a feeling that would be the last time Gretchen challenged me.

As I expected, Norah was more than happy to help me out with the amber. She also said that her Kinghad changed his mind and offered five of his warriors to assist in taking out Magdalene. As tempting as it was, I told her to thank the King but it wouldn’t be necessary; the amber was all I required from them.

“Fuck. Yeah girl. I totally get why the big fella doesn’t want you coming here” Norah laughed as I finished explaining to her the whole ‘three animals, three mates’ fiasco, “it would be pretty fucking funny though. We have a few unmated bears that are absolutely massive...if you get what I mean. The panther would be the least of Jayce’s worries”

I snorted. I could only imagine.

“I’ll send the amber to you with an eagle. That way our location stays hidden, along with your bear virginity”

“Funny”

I thanked Norah for her help and hung up the phone. The amber would be here by this time tomorrow, then Cassius could work his magic and put together my clasp amulet.
I wandered back into the pack house. All eyes were on me as I walked into the room; except for Gretchen’s, her’s were firmly focused on the floor. I noticed the marks on her neck were healed and wondered if she had told anyone. Probably not, how embarrassing for her.

“How did you go?” Moira asked as I took up my seat next to Jayce.

“Great, actually. Norah is sending the amber via messenger eagle. It should be here tomorrow. The King also offered us five of his warriors...”

Jayce and Kyanite both tensed and I had to stop myself from laughing out loud. I squeezed Jayce’s knee under the table.

“I told Norah to thank him for his generosity but declined the offer”

“Well that’s a great result” Cassius said, “once we receive the amber, Gretchen, Moira and I will affix the gems to the clasp”

“Is there any way to test it?” Kyanite asked, “or do we just close our eyes and hope for the best?”

Gretchen looked up for the first time since I’d entered the room.

“No. There is no testing it. The clasp will only be good for one use. The power that it needs to channel will destroy it”

“Hopefully the power will only destroy the clasp and not the person wearing it...” Jayce said to Gretchen, more of a question than a statement.

“Hopefully” she muttered in return.

“Hopefully?” Kyanite repeated.

“Obviously that’s the whole point” Cassius added, “your idea to add the three shifter gems is brilliant. I’ve been thinking about it over and over, I honestly don’t think there is another option. The clasp will prevent Magdalene from being able to possess Quinn and the gems will hold the energy from the shifters and their gods”

“And how will I use the energy?” I asked.

It was something that had been running through my mind. I wasn’t a mage, I didn’t have magical abilities. How was I supposed to project the power from the shifters and gods in order to kill the witch?

“Gretchen and I will work on that with you” Cassius answered, “you’ll be able to do it, it’s just a matter of knowing where and how to focus the energy”

The thought of working with Gretchen made my panther and wolf snort angrily but I knew that I would just have to suck it up and push my personal feelings about her to the back of my mind. She was a wolf-mage hybrid and even though she was a complete and utter mate-stealing pain in my arse...she had skills that I needed.

Brax POV

“What do you mean? None? You brought me none?” Magdalene hissed.

Her hand struck the small wooden table next to her, causing it to shatter. Blue lightning crackled around her hands as she clenched her fists.
She was angry. I knew what she was capable of when her anger got the best of her. I’d seen it first hand, I’d seen her vaporise wolves and panthers with just a look. She was the most powerful being I’d ever come across.

“The forests were scoured, every last inch, but there wasn’t a single shifter to be seen” I answered.

Magdalene glared at the wolves next to me. They stood there, silent, their eyes red and void of their former selves.

“Do you really think we need more shifters?” I asked, “We have more than enough to take over Fern Creek”

The witch exhaled and closed her eyes. The blue electricity slowly faded from around her hands. When she opened her eyes again she looked at me, a warm smile playing on her lips.

“I just want to be sure” she answered gently, “it breaks my heart what that Beta did to your mate...and the fact that her Alpha allowed it to happen. I’m creating this army so you can get your revenge for Beth. We’ll storm the compound and take out the Alpha, Luna and Beta. Then you can challenge the next in line for Alpha...you’ll win, of course, and Fern Creek will be yours”

I nodded, remembering why we had gone through all of this. Remembering the end game. I owed Magdalene, she had found me at my rock bottom and saved me. She gave me a purpose again and that purpose was to exact my revenge on the Beta and take over Fern Creek. Magdalene had told me of the cruel and calculated way Alpha Jayce ran Fern Creek and that his abomination mate was non the better. Even though I hated the fact that we were using wolves against their will, I knew it was only temporary. As soon as we had achieved our objective the wolves would go back to normal and would remember nothing. They could return to their packs, to their families.

The one thing I hadn’t bargained on was Magdalene’s temper. I had seen her kill several wolves and panthers just because she couldn’t possess them or they looked at her wrong. It was only a week ago that she killed the Alpha of the Kylo Pack. I needed to try to keep her happy, keep her focused. No more innocent wolves needed to die.

“I know you’re doing all of this to help me and I’ll be forever grateful” I said to Magdalene, “we have near on fifty wolves and ten panthers. We also have you...an amazingly powerful witch. I’m telling you, it’s enough”

“Just a few more, Brax” the witch hummed, “then, I promise, we’ll make that Beta pay”
