HAZEL

I had never been to Texas before. From what people said, it should have been all farmland and cows, and for a few long hours, it was. But then just as Megan, my social worker and chauffer, finally stopped trying to make small talk, the pastures turned into hills, the hills became more highway than grass, and the city unfolded before my eyes.

San Antonio, home of the Alamo (or its ruins, at least) and Six Flags Fiesta Texas. It was going to be my home now too. Until my father found me.

As if by instinct, my hand flew up the purple and black bruise decorating my cheek. Whenever I thought about him, I felt small and weak and alone. I cowered in the front seat.

Megan glanced away from the road, looking at me sideways. I almost dropped my hand. Everyone had already seen the bruise. It was why they had taken me away, why my father was in jail, why they were putting me in foster care. I was a child of the State now.

It was a funny feeling. Being taken away from everything you had ever known. No matter how bad my life was, it was still my life. I wanted to be the one to change that, not a bunch of complete strangers who asked too many question and felt the need to over-complicate everything.

“Don’t you worry, darling,” Meg said, patting my knee in a calming, motherly way. “He can’t hurt you anymore. This new family, they’re good people. They won’t hurt you either. You’re safe now.”

She put both hands back on the steering wheel and sighed contentedly at the road, though we were in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Still, it was better than Corpus beaches during spring break. Madhouse.

My limbs slowly relaxed. I knew that Megan was just trying to make me feel safe and welcome, but physical contact still made me uncomfortable. Extremely so. There had never been one time that I had been hugged by someone without an ulterior motive. A pinch, whispered profanity, hands going where they had no right to be. Really, could anyone blame me for my trust issues? I had every right to be cautious.

I hoped that this new family wasn’t affectionate. I hoped they wouldn’t hug me or love me or make me love them.

Because when my father came for me-and he would come-it would be so much easier to let go if I didn’t love anyone in this new home. It wouldn’t be home for very long.

CookieMonster911: The story overall was an adventure that is appealing to any age. The way the characters develop adds a more human characteristic to the novel. The writing style itself is amazing because you can learn every character's thoughts and emotions. The awkward love triangle and jerk moments adds to the ...

263Adder: Okay so I adore this story. I only knocked one star off plot for historical inaccuracies because I'm a bit of a stickler for that. The ending broke my heart though, considering you already changed history couldn't you (SPOILER) change it a bit more and have them together!!!! I want an alternative...

Beau Bayot: I like the way the story is told and really engages the reader. In the daily life of a B17 Bomber Pilot that just happens to be a commander of an air-group, along with the hassles of keeping a bomber group running in peak performance during WW2. Banner should also consider himself lucky both at h...

JONANNA: As an avid reader it is not often I say that about a book. The plot is what was different and the twists where unexpected. This book is defiantly a page turner and enjoyable read. I can't wait to reread this novel after a little editing to finish off the shine on this wonderful novel.

nirrmitshah: A truely touching story where you'd be at the edge of your seat for the most time. even though the starting might seem rushed, the story was extremely interesting and entertaining. I think certain parts could be added detailing the Mynds's culture. As well as more details on the Jhanthru history....

genlynne2379: I read the other review of this book and I must say that I disagree with it wholeheartedly. I do not believe the author put the apostrophes in the names just to be unique, but because the characters are supposedly of a different race than humans. They are Anmah. They should have different names a...

ArgyrisMetaxas: Thrilling story which builds layer ontop of layer. A few mis spellings every few chapters. What I found special was that it took a modern day problem and took it to its logical conclusion and plays this realism with gritting precision. I'm always on edge ready to shout from adrenaline. This is gr...

Alani Foreigner: I absolutely loved how you created this story. It isn't like the other cliché stories I've ever read. I had just started reading it yesterday and just had to finish it. The main characters are grotesquely awesome and I fell in love with them. If you're into fantasy and stuff I can guarantee that ...

maewilde25: I am so in love with this story!!! captivated me till the very end, there wasn't a dull moment. Didn't particularly enjoy the lay out and some bits of info was missing along with how a 21 year old man amassed so much wealth that needed to be explained other than that and a few spelling errors, th...

Sabrina Ettey: The story plot is great. I loved it. Just the grammar punctuation and writing style was kind of distracting. But with the smooth polishing, it may shine like a pearl. :)

littlebunnypoopoos: Omg this was so amazing! The ending was a little bad and predictable. But otherwise, I need a second book or I'll die :D The character development was excellent and the whole romance, action, and suspense was superb

maewilde25: I liked this, though it dragged on for over 200pages and heaven knows I did not expect the plot twist in the middle. David being Cristiãn. I was wondering when he would show up and didn't know he was there all along. it looks like there should be a sequel, please let there be a sequel. I know the...

Giuliana Cassetta: My face is full of tears, I never cried like now with a book or even a movie. I loved every single chapter. I truly don't know what to say, I'm out of words and my eyes hurt from crying. Such an bittersweet story, it's so wonderful. One of my favorites for sure. Keep it up!

annie08c: I really like this story, I can relate to it a lot and with how she feels, the boyfriend and the events that happened but I'm a little bit younger. It was really good plot, really liked how you stuck to the topic and you had a new title for every chapter making me guess what's going to happen. Ma...

Shreya Biswas: Finally god...... I was tired of Charissa doubting Frederick's love... yes.. All's well that ends well.... i was getting really downright agitated at the author because the suspense was held really well on how things will work out in the epilogue and i just wanted them to have a happy ending.. An...
