HAZEL

I had never been to Texas before. From what people said, it should have been all farmland and cows, and for a few long hours, it was. But then just as Megan, my social worker and chauffer, finally stopped trying to make small talk, the pastures turned into hills, the hills became more highway than grass, and the city unfolded before my eyes.

San Antonio, home of the Alamo (or its ruins, at least) and Six Flags Fiesta Texas. It was going to be my home now too. Until my father found me.

As if by instinct, my hand flew up the purple and black bruise decorating my cheek. Whenever I thought about him, I felt small and weak and alone. I cowered in the front seat.

Megan glanced away from the road, looking at me sideways. I almost dropped my hand. Everyone had already seen the bruise. It was why they had taken me away, why my father was in jail, why they were putting me in foster care. I was a child of the State now.

It was a funny feeling. Being taken away from everything you had ever known. No matter how bad my life was, it was still my life. I wanted to be the one to change that, not a bunch of complete strangers who asked too many question and felt the need to over-complicate everything.

“Don’t you worry, darling,” Meg said, patting my knee in a calming, motherly way. “He can’t hurt you anymore. This new family, they’re good people. They won’t hurt you either. You’re safe now.”

She put both hands back on the steering wheel and sighed contentedly at the road, though we were in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Still, it was better than Corpus beaches during spring break. Madhouse.

My limbs slowly relaxed. I knew that Megan was just trying to make me feel safe and welcome, but physical contact still made me uncomfortable. Extremely so. There had never been one time that I had been hugged by someone without an ulterior motive. A pinch, whispered profanity, hands going where they had no right to be. Really, could anyone blame me for my trust issues? I had every right to be cautious.

I hoped that this new family wasn’t affectionate. I hoped they wouldn’t hug me or love me or make me love them.

Because when my father came for me-and he would come-it would be so much easier to let go if I didn’t love anyone in this new home. It wouldn’t be home for very long.

annie08c: I really like this story, I can relate to it a lot and with how she feels, the boyfriend and the events that happened but I'm a little bit younger. It was really good plot, really liked how you stuck to the topic and you had a new title for every chapter making me guess what's going to happen. Ma...

Giuliana Cassetta: My face is full of tears, I never cried like now with a book or even a movie. I loved every single chapter. I truly don't know what to say, I'm out of words and my eyes hurt from crying. Such an bittersweet story, it's so wonderful. One of my favorites for sure. Keep it up!

rihannabkj2: Great story,I can hardly stop reading this novel. it shows that compassion and love can still exist after so many years between two persons. 263Adder: Okay so I adore this story. I only knocked one star off plot for historical inaccuracies because I'm a bit of a stickler for that. The ending broke my heart though, considering you already changed history couldn't you (SPOILER) change it a bit more and have them together!!!! I want an alternative...

Alex Rushmer: This was not what I expected, but I enjoyed it a lot Malfoy was always one of the characters that I liked a lot, so I like that a lot of this happens between him and Colette. kwilliams: I am an avid reader, and I do mean AVID and few indie authors capture my attention the way you have. I absolutely fell in love with these characters and their story. johansp: A compelling story that quickly became a pageturner for me.The reader gets dragged into the horrors of war in a realistic way. The "hero" is also a person I could relate to, as in a human being with all the fears and doubts that arise in a war situation. There is also a good level of technical kno...

Dru83: This is the second or third time I've read this one and I just love it. It has just about everything you could ever want packed into one scifi story. It still has some parts that are a little rough in terms of grammar, punctuation, and word usage, but it's still an awesome story. I love how detai...

Grapes Are Juicy yes!!!: I give this novel FIVE STARS ! This novel is worth reading from the beginning to the end! The plot and conflicts in this story are very smartly integrated. The language facility is a little odd , but i guess this was done on purpose, given the novel's set era. Other than that, this should definit...

genlynne2379: I read the other review of this book and I must say that I disagree with it wholeheartedly. I do not believe the author put the apostrophes in the names just to be unique, but because the characters are supposedly of a different race than humans. They are Anmah. They should have different names a...

Atractivo Sumit: The story is an amazing blend of what we call natural, plain romance along with subtle emotions and interesting twists. The plot is so beautifully interwoven.

Hawkebat: Playing both Kotor I & II and Swtor I found the story line interesting and it held me until chapter 35 Very good story and plot flow until then, very few technical errors. I felt that the main character was a bit under and over powered, as it fought for balance. The last few chapters felt too f...

emmaneal74: I loved this booked. Would definitely buy it when published and read it again. The story flowed in such a way I just couldn't put it down.
