Why We Build the Wall/You Know I Love You

A long, weary sigh erupted from her pursed lips as she locked the front door, then entered back into her body with a smile.

“You are not to consort with that man again! Do you understand, my flower? He’s quite a bad influence...and it is getting late. Time for bed...I--we, ought to get some rest, for there’s paperwork to be done, my darling!”

She then yawned, the sort of yawn that makes someone look like they’re sleepy but there’s something mildly off about the sound of it--like an attempt at a yawn. This, combined with the odd disappearance of her friendly familiar and the total lack of bluebirds in the town (Mom told me they died) gave me a well-hidden sense of fright. I missed my little bluebird friend.

“Hail Mary, full of grace, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, amen.”

I said about five of those that night, daring myself to look at the portrait of Mom on the chamber wall, or the Bible upon my desk, eagerly trying to forget what had been said that day.
