What’s with both of them? Did they secretly take some drug which I don’t know about?
“Did you hear that?” Kyle let out between laughs and Lyla nodded before saying,
“Yeah, I did. Gosh! Kyle”
“What is it? Did I say something funny?”
Kyle immediately sobered up while Lyla still remained laughing.
But his lips again tugged upwards and in no time, he was clutching his stomach hard while pearls of laughter left both his and Lyla’s mouth.
“What you said was hilarious!”
“Jaz, my baby.” Lyla came upto me, slinging her arm around my shoulder.
" You can’t go alone in there. You hate empty spaces.”
Oh yeah. I get it now.
Of course I hate empty spaces but I mean the lights were still on and I can just quickly go inside and grab my phone and run out. Why would I be scared of that?
“You throw tantrums around even if I tell you to go get a glass of water alone from the kitchen at my house.”
I remember that. I immediately turned towards her.
“But in my defense it was late at night and downstairs was all filled with a kind of gloomy silence of darkness.”
I added my hand gestures, moving them around as if forming a cloud.
“Really?” She cocked her eyebrow at me mockingly.
“You do that even in the broad daylight.”
Kyle spoke in from of us, still laughing like an idiot.
“Stop laughing, you dumbass.” I showed him my fist.
Moving away my shoulder from under Lyla’s arm, I straightened up.
“You both, stop it. I’m going inside and will come out quickly. It’s not like I have to stay there for more than a minute.”
I said with my chin held high.
" You see, I’m going to run inside that door.” I pointed to the big brown double doors of the library.
“Get my phone and quickly come out.”
They both nodded with shit eating grins on the both of their faces.
“Sure sure.” Kyke uttered sarcastically.
I stuck my tongue out at him before turning around on my heels and starting to walk towards the library.
I feel like sticking your tongue out is much better than showing the finger. Like what is the use of showing the finger when you can always stuck your tongue out?
I don’t know if what I’m saying even makes any sense.
Like sticking out your tongue is more fun than just plainly using your middle finger. Which reminds me why I don’t usually use middle finger - it’s because for most of my childhood period, upto until 9th grade, I thought that middle finger was the finger for engagement rings.
I know, I know. Pretty dumb, right?
“Be careful, Jaz. Should we come along?”
I could hear concern in Lyla’s voice.
Kyle quickly ran upto me with Lyla behind him.
“Babe. No need to go inside. I’ll go get your phone for you.”
“Kyle’s right.” Ly nodded along with him.
I frowned, creases formed on my forehead before turning to look at them both.
“Do you think I’m an idiot? Because I’m not. It’s nothing okay, I’m trying to change certain aspects of my life so-”
“By certain aspects you mean studying?” Kyle interrupted.
“Yes, of course so-”
“That’s great. I’m glad you are making an effort.” This time Lyla interrupted.
“Yeah so as-”
“I thought you were talking about to change your love life.” Kyle quickly said as if he put much thought into it.
“No I was-”
“Hush, Kyle! I knew she was obviously talking about studies.” Lyla answered happily and alongside cutting me off from what I was saying.
I clicked my tongue in annoyance.
“May I speak now?”
They both moved their head nodding.
“Yeah you can speak.”
“When did we ever stop you.”
Lyla and Kyle again interrupted me.
I narrowed my eyes at them ahd they both quickly put their hands up in surrender.
“So as I was saying, along with studying, I should also change a few things about myself so why not start with this? My irrational fear of empty spaces. I’ll go inside. Have faith in me.”
My voice full of determination which I’m sure is going to leave my body in a minute because that’s what it always does.
Determination comes to me for a few minutes and then vanish in the air like poof! As if it was never there.
The moment I stepped inside, I immediately regretted my decision of coming alone.
Like why did I have to be so stubborn headed?!
God, Jaziel. You are really dumb.
I looked around trying to find the table we were sitting on.
But every table looked alike.
Of course, duffer. It’s a university library. What were you expecting?
I decided to ignore my sassy subconscious for a while abd focused on finding my phone.
Wait....I should have brought Kyke or Lyla’s phone with me atleast so I could call on my number and find out where it is.
And also use flashlight too!
I am really dumb.
I quickly made my way around the left side of the library where we had sat and started looking on each table.
The lights were on but they were so dim seemingly being equivalent to no lights at all.
“Nope, not here.”
I murmured to myself while looking for my phone.
“Maybe that table.”
“Um...no, how about that one?” I quickly went to check the table second to the last one along the window.
“What? Not here too?” I talked to myself mostly when being alone because it takes the focus off being alone and I wouldn’t panic that way unnecessarily.
“Where could have I dropped it?′
I spin my body around in circles just because I was bored from plainly walking.
I felt like a beautiful ballerina going around in circles in the library. The huge Library will be my dance floor.
With it’s peach coloured big walls lined up with dark mahogany wooden shelves and those antique paintings with golden highlights, trust me when I say this place looked as if it was made for royal dances.
I loved the small glass chandeliers hung up on almost every table.
I decided to spin around a little more to see if I could find my phone and if not, then I’ll just come here in the morning to look for it. I was spinning around in circles when I heard the sound.
"You all in your feelings, baby
All into me
I’m one in a billion, baby
Don’t you agree?”
Fuck. This is my ringtone. I quickly followed to the sound from where it was comming and reached the third table from the left, a little far away from the glass window.
There I saw it.
Moonlight shining on the table made it easier for me to see. I must have misplaced it while packing my bag and then forgot to take it with me.
"Obviously, you know I’m aware of that
I’m breaking hearts like a heart attack
Got him right where the carats at
Wrapped ’round my finger like a ring, ring, ring”
Seeing as the caller ID was BlueEyesHypnotise , I picked it up and answered. It was Lyla.
But even before I could let a single word out, Lyla started,
“Did you get the phone? Why is it taking so much time? Listen, we’ll just come tomorrow early in the morning to check it. Just come back, now! Wait, no don’t come back. I’m coming for you..”
“Me too.” That was Kyle in the back shouting. “I’ll come for you babe.”
I sighed. These two.
Just when I was about to put the phone in the back pocket of my jeans, a hard voice could be heard.
It was muffled so I couldn’t make much of it.
“Hmm. Weird. I’m pretty sure there was no one in the library at this time then who could it be?” I spoke out. My lips forming a confused pout.
“Oh my! Maybe it’s that ghost everyone was talking about, the one that resides in the library.”
I lightly patted my chest.
“No, no, nothing will happen. I shouldn’t think like this.”
Pursing my lips, I was wondered, ” Maybe it’s just a bird.... but bird wouldn’t be in the library so maybe it’s a rat..oh no, please let it be not a rat. Please, please!”
Right after my pleading, I heard a door slam shut.
I immediately turned around thinking maybe its Kyle and Lyla but then I realised that the sound came from the other end of the library, most probably from the back of it.
But as far as I know, I don’t think so there’s any back door in our Library.
Our library only has one door which is used for both exit and entrance.
Again, my traitor feet decided to follow where the sound came from.
I quickly reached a dead end at the extreme back of the library.
Jaziel, I think this is the place where we’ll die. Get ready for it.
Why are you saying that?
You don’t know? Haven’t you seen in movies? This is the exactly the kind of place where most murders happen. The perfect place to kill someone. The darkness aiding the killer, the emptying place, no sound whatsoever. Just wait, either a ghost or a killer will jump out any minute now and kill you.
And right on cue, I heard a rough voice calling out my name.
“No, no, please don’t kill me. I did nothing, I swear. I didn’t even come here intentionally. It’s just that I heard something and plus, trust me , you will get nothing out of killing me. I’m not even that tasty, you can check it yourself. Wait..no, you can’t tastes me, I mean please don’t taste me or I’ll die. I haven’t even binge watched “Vincenzo” yet. Nor have I eaten my chocolate in my bag.. please don’t kill me. I also-” I suddenly rambled all out but stopped when I heard another voice, a feminine voice this time.
“Jaziel. It’s us Lyla and Kyle.”
Oh, I let out a breath in relief without realising I was holding my breath all this time.
And immediately after that, I could hear them both laughing at my rambling. I guess maybe I was a bit too loud for them to have heard me from here all the way at the back.
I rolled my eyes in frustration. I just want to go home and sleep. Is that too much to ask?
“We are here at the entrance. Where are you?”
I shook my head and took a few deep breaths in order to calm myself before calling out.
" I’m here, I’m here. Wait, I’ll come to the entrance.” I said, before adding happily,
“I FOUND MY PHONE!”
I shouted in happiness on having found it going against my stupid fear of empty places.
“Come fast, babe!” Kyle shouted back before continuing with a high pitch tone this time,
“I KNEW YOU COULD DO IT. I’M PROUD OF YOU!”
I chuckled. I swear he’s like my own ball of happiness and positivity. He motivates me every time.
Laughing a little to myself, I looked down at my phone and putting it in my pocket, just when my gaze fell on something shining on the floor.
Because of lack of proper light, I couldn’t exactly figure what it was but it looked like something small.
But whatever it was , it shined brightly under the moonlight, lying near the second large bookshelf in the last row of the room.
I slowly walked over to it and bent slightly.
Should I pick it up?
What if it belongs to a ghost?
Shaking my head to get these thoughts out of my mind, I hesitantly reached my hand out to pick it up.
It was something round in shape and silver.
That explains why it shined in the moonlight.
Bringing it closer to my eyes, my mind quickly confirmed what it was.
A platinum band ring.
