First Day

Jack

I’m so glad I took Mina shopping today. I would have bought the whole damn mall if she asked for it. Her humble upbringing makes Mina even more endearing. She’s so beautiful, I caught myself staring a few times today.

“Where would you like to go for dinner? There’s an amazing steakhouse close by.” Only the best for Mina.

“Steak sounds perfect.” Mina says, with a wide smile. We quickly arrive at the restaurant and I place my hand on the small of her back as we walk inside.

“Alpha Jack,” the hostess gives a small bow. “I will get your usual table ready right away.” The hostess, a pack member, quickly disappears. Mina’s eyebrow quirks up as she looks up at me.

“So, I take it you come here often.” Mina giggles and I shrug my shoulders and smile.

“I like a good steak and this place is the best.” Just then the hostess returns and leads us to my table. We sit and Mina inspects the menu.

“Everything looks so good. I can’t decide what to pick.” Mina shakes her head.

“Will you allow me to order for you?” I ask. Mina smiles and thinks about it for a moment.

“Yes, Jack. Thank you.” Mina says, sweetly. The waiter approaches us to take our order. Steak and shrimp with seasoned red potatoes, asparagus, and a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon.

“Do you have everything you need to start working tomorrow?” I ask. I want to be sure she has what she needs. Although, another day spent alone with her would be amazing.

“I think I’m good for now. Thank you for everything Jack. I’m looking forward to tomorrow.” Mina says, excitedly.

“Good! I think you’ll do great.” The waiter comes back to our table with a basket of bread and wine. Mina took a sip of her wine and smiled.

“Now that’s an amazing wine. I’ve never had wine before.” Mina admits.

“Never?” I know she was deprived of a lot of things, but I also know Alpha Otis drank a lot of wine.

“No, Alpha Otis never allowed me to have any. I was there to work and that’s what I did every day.” Mina shrugs and smiles like it’s nothing. Her reaction to her previous life makes me want to give her everything. Mina takes another drink of her wine and sits back in her seat. “Tell me something about the guys I’ll be working with. They seem like a good group.” I can’t help but chuckle.

“I think you’re going to get along great with the guys. They are all trustworthy men and very dedicated. I’m excited to see you change up their physical training. I think that’s going to be where you win them over. Besides your quick wit of course.” Mina laughs at me.

“I don’t know about quick wit, but I do know I can give as good as I get. The men I trained with at the Deadtooth pack could be very mean. I decided I could either cry about it or fire back. Honestly, I decided to fire back because I didn’t have anything to lose. In the end, some respected me for it while others just got meaner. I don’t have any regrets.” Mina smiles and I can’t help but smile with her. She really is amazing. Our food comes and we dig into our meals and enjoy each other’s company. I forget she’s only 17 and hasn’t had a chance to meet her mate yet. As much as I enjoy her company I will have to remind myself not to get involved. She’s young and doesn’t need to be distracted by me.

We arrive at the packhouse and she’s excited to get her office set up for the week. I help her bring all the bags in so she can get to work.

“Thank you, Jack. I can take it from here.” Tristan knocks lightly on the open door.

“Hi, Mina. Sorry to interrupt, Jack, can I speak with you please?” Tristan nods toward my office next door.

“Sure thing. Mina, I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Hi, Tristan. I’ll see you guys tomorrow.” Mina smiles at us and starts pulling items from the bags. I take one more look at her before I follow Tristan to my office.

“What’s going on Tristan? Is everything ok?” Tristan takes a deep breath before taking a seat across from me.

“I got a call from one of our warriors we sent to Deadtooth. They’ve been attacked by rogues. No losses but Alpha Otis was injured.” Tristan shakes his head. “He was drunk and fell down the stairs when the alarm went up. Our men have noticed pack members are slowly leaving the pack without a word. They just pack up and leave. I’ve got one of the men ready to follow the next family that leaves. At this rate, Alpha Otis, won’t have a pack to lead.” I stand up and pace the floor. This is a perfect time for his pack to be attacked.

“Keep me posted. Have our men ready at all times. The last thing I want is for anyone to get hurt. Let’s be ready to take in any of his pack members looking for a new home. I know it was bad while we were there but it seems that it may be worse than we saw on the surface.” There are a couple of packs close by Deadtooth that his people may be moving to. I want to be prepared for anything.

“You got it, sir. One more thing before I leave.” Tristan stands in front of the door, his hand on the knob. “Mina’s parents are still in Deadtooth... do you think we should extend an invitation for her family to move here?” My skin prickles thinking of how her parents treated her. The bruise on her cheek and her alcoholic father.

“Let’s wait until we hear back from our men. Mina doesn’t have the best relationship with her parents. Her brother and his mate seem like good people. I need our men to get us as much information as possible. It hasn’t even been 24 hours yet.” I’m not about to expose Mina to the possibility of taking her parents in unnecessarily.

“You got it, boss. I’ll see you in the morning.” Tristan walks out of my office and I’m left thinking about Mina and the Deadtooth pack. I should let Mina know what is happening. Maybe she can shed some light as to the conditions there.

Mina

I’m almost completely set up to start working in my new office. I hear a knock on the door before it opens and Bella walks in.

“Oh good, you’re still up.” She says, glancing at the smartwatch on her wrist.

“Is there something I can help you with?” I ask. I can’t imagine why she would want to speak to me.

“Jack is mine so don’t get any ideas. We’ve grown up together, I live here in the house, and we see each other every day at the office. Make sure you don’t forget your place, Omega.” I can feel my heart rate escalate.

“That’s interesting. Jack tells a different story.” I grab the remaining items from my desk and start walking toward the door and shrug my shoulders. “Good luck with that.” I walk out the office door leaving Bella standing there with her mouth open. What a bitch.

I wake up before my alarm, as usual, and get ready for a morning run. I’m excited to get a good layout of the area. On my way outside I run into Sawyer and Reed.

“Hey boss.” Reed says to me. “Do you mind some company this morning?”

“That sounds great. Hope you two can keep up.” The guys chuckle as we head outside.

They do their best to keep up but I stay just a few strides ahead of them the entire time. We run about three miles this morning, a short run for me. By the time we get back, Sawyer and Reed are bent over trying to catch their breath.

“Do you normally go for three-mile runs every morning?” Sawyer asks, still trying to catch his breath.

“No,” I say as I stretch my legs out. “I normally go for five.” I look up to see Sawyer and Reed both looking at me wide-eyed.

“FIVE!” They say in unison. Reed falls to the ground.

“I give up. You win. Badass of the day goes to Mina.” I walk over to Reed and offer a hand to help him up. He takes it and we follow Sawyer into the house.

“My goal is to get all of you running five miles like it’s nothing. I think you guys can do it, but it’s going to take discipline.” I pat Reed on the back. “I’ll see you two later today.” I take off to my room to shower and get ready to go into the office with Jack today. I picked out a pale blue silk top, a black suit jacket, and pants. I step outside my room and almost run into Jack.

“I’m so sorry. I wasn’t expecting you to be waiting for me.”

“No worries. I have a surprise for you.” Jack’s smile is playful this morning. I follow him to my office. What is he up to? He opens my office door and giggles. I see a small wrapped gift in the middle of my desk.

“Jack! You’ve bought me so much already.” I shake my head as I pick up the small box.

“I wanted to get you something special for your first day. I’m thrilled you’re here. I think you will do great things.” Jack says, sweetly. I lean against my desk and open a rose gold pen set. It’s so beautiful. I take the pen out and see my name engraved, Lumina Emerson.

“Oh Jack. I love it.” I’m speechless. I’ve never received a gift like this. “Thank you, Jack. Really, it’s... beautiful.” I look up and see Jack beaming with pride.

“You’re welcome, Mina. I really do think you are going to be great here. I heard Reed and Sawyer grumbling this morning. Something about you being a badass?” Mina starts laughing. “You are exactly what we need around here.”

“That means a lot to hear you say that. Thank you.” I leave my gift on the desk. Jack smiles at me and I head to the door. Jack places his hand on the small of my back and we head out to the car. Sawyer gets in the drivers seat.

“Good morning, Alpha. Good morning boss. Ready to start your first official day?” He asks, glancing up at me through the rear view mirror.

“Good morning, Sawyer. I am ready for the day. Thank you.” He chuckles and focuses on the road. I like the people I’m working with. I’m excited about training with the men this evening. This is a strong pack, I can’t imagine that the men wouldn’t be physically fit and ready for a fight. They probably just need a little extra push. I may need to go online for workout ideas. I wonder if I’ll get a computer. I look over to see Jack typing away on his phone, judging by the creases on his brow, he’s deep in thought.

We pull up to the front of the office building and walk inside. As expected, it’s amazing inside. White marble floors, seafoam green walls with modern artwork on the walls. The front desk has a light finish with metal details. A tall blonde stands as we enter the building and greets Jack.

“Good morning, Anita.” He pulls me closer to the desk beside him. “This is Mina. She’s head of security and will accompany me to the office every day. I want her to have an all-access key card to the building.” She eyes me hesitantly before responding.

“Of course, Alpha. I’ll have it ready in an hour.” She says smiling at Jack. He nods his head and leads me to a bank of elevators.

“You’ll meet with Reed, Sawyer, and Jer later this morning to go over building security. Jer leads things here in the office while the other two help him out.” Jack informs me as we walk into the elevator.

“Great. Do all the men lead in some capacity?” I ask, I’ve noticed Sawyer usually drives Jack and Reed is usually close by.

“Not all of them. Tyler and Evan are newer to the team. Jer, Sawyer, and Reed are usually in the lead. Jer helped me set up the initial security details for the building, which is why he leads things here. He knows all of the ins and outs of the office.” Jack smiles at me. “I appreciate the fact that you want to know your team. That’s a sign of a good leader.” We step off the elevator on the 20th floor and Jack opens an office door and leads me inside. I look around to see a large glass desk, two chairs opposite the desk, and a small bar in the corner. In the middle of the office is a glass coffee table with two black leather couches on either side. Jack walks to his desk and motions for me to sit in one of the chairs.

“I just want to make sure the men are in the best positions.” I say, watching Jack.

“I know. You’re going to be just fine. I promise I won’t set you up for failure.” He powers up a laptop and types something before leaning back in his seat. “I have a few things for you. I want you to have all access. So, I have a laptop, tablet, and cellphone for you. Jer will bring them when he meets with you today.” Jack checks his watch and smiles. “Now we go to our morning meeting.”

“Lead the way, Alpha.” Jack chuckles and I walk beside him to a nearby conference room. Bella is there, as well as Jer and Tristan. I give Bella a fake smile. “Good morning gentlemen.” I know I’m new, but I couldn’t stop myself. Bella glares at me and I sigh. Fine. “And Bella.” Jer is trying and failing to hide his smile. I take a seat next to Jack and Bella sits on the other side. Of course she does.

“Jack, I brought you coffee this morning.” Bella hands Jack a coffee and he smiles at Bella.

“Thank you Bella.” He says and takes the cup. She hands a file folder to Jack.

“This is the information you requested on the land purchase. It’s a good price and there are a few building options. I’ve outlined three ideas for you. If you want to make the purchase you’ll need to act fast. It won’t be available for long.” Jack briefly looks at the documents before closing the folder and setting it aside.

“Thank you, Bella. I’ll have an answer for you tomorrow.” Bella sits back in her seat smiling at Jack. I fight the urge to roll my eyes.

“I got a phone call this morning from our New York office. There was a security breach. The person was apprehended and is currently in police custody. They have asked us to review the footage to figure out how this happened.” Tristan looks at me and Jer.

“Of course I’ll take a look, but why didn’t they contact me directly. They have security personnel at that office and they know how to reach me.” Jer says, looking from Tristan to Jack.

“I don’t know. There’s definitely an issue in New York. Security didn’t contact me about the incident, a board member did.” Jack and Jer exchange looks, not pleased. “I’m hoping this issue can be taken care of without any of us needing to go there to fix this. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a suitcase at the ready.” Tristan looks as concerned as Jack and Jer.

“Mina can help us review the footage. I have electronics at the ready for Mina. She’ll have access to everything she needs.” Jer looks at me and winks.

“Great. Thank you for taking care of that.” Jack looks at his watch. “Bella and I have another meeting to go to. Is there anything else I need to know?” Jack asks the group. Everyone shakes their head and Jack stands gathering his things. “Mina, I’ll be done with this meeting just before noon. Why don’t we get together for lunch? We can check in at that time.”

“Sounds like a plan. I’ll meet you in your office at noon.” I say, standing. Jack and Bella leave the conference room and disappear down the hall.

“Ok kiddo! Let’s go have some fun.” Jer pats me on the back.

“You poor thing. Stuck with Jer.” Tristan shakes his head and chuckles as he walks across the hall to his office.

“Hey! I’m fun!” Jer looks at me and smiles wide. “Really!” I can’t help but giggle. We walk to the office beside Jack’s and I’m overwhelmed with a wall of screens in a dark room. Sawyer and Reed are at a long desk playing paper, rock, scissors.

“You’re back!” Reed says. “Mina, check out all the cool stuff we got you.” Reed reaches under the desk and grabs a large white shopping bag and hands it to me. I start pulling everything out. A laptop, tablet, cellphone, and a laptop bag to carry everything.

“Wow! I’ve never had any of this before. I’m so excited to play with everything.” I’m genuinely so excited. Jack really did think of everything for me. I look up to see three sets of eyes staring at me.

“What do you mean you’ve never had any of this?” Sawyer looks at me, then the guys, then back at me.

“When I was at school I used the schools laptops and tablets. I didn’t have anything of my own.” I tell them. “You’ve seen my previous pack... it’s not exactly state of the art in any way. When I wasn’t in school, I was working at the packhouse.” I shrug my shoulders. “I’m an Omega guys.”

“Well you’re not an Omega here. Honestly, you’re too badass to be an Omega.” Reed says. “Running five miles every morning, is not for the weak.” I laugh at him.

“I think we’ll start with a tour of the main points.” Jer grabs the tablet and powers it on. “I want to show you the actual building areas and then what they look like on the security footage.” Jer leans over the desk to a screen and brings up footage on one of the screens. “While we’re gone, I need the two of you to check this out and tell me what went wrong. This is our New York office and they had a breach.” Reed and Sawyer exchange concerned looks.

“We’ll take a look right away Tristan.” Sawyer says. I walk with Jer and he shows me how to navigate the security program on the tablet as we walk through each of the main points. He points out where the cameras are and shows me how to move them to follow action. After a while I start to feel more comfortable with the program. We head back to the security office to assist Reed and Sawyer with the footage.

“Hmm. That’s weird.” I say to Reed, he pauses the footage.

“What did you see?” He asks, leaning closer to the screen. I point to the angle the security guard is standing.

“He let the guy just walk right in. There’s the person in question, the security guard looks at him, then turns his back. He let him come into the building. It’s an inside job.” I tell them. It’s so obvious what happened. Jer curses then grabs his phone. When he gets off the phone, Tristan walks in.

“Show me the footage.” He walks up to the desk.

“Mina is the one that saw it.” Reed says. He backs up the film and I show him what I told the guys. He sighs and frowns.

“Good work Mina. I have a feeling we’re going to need to make a trip out there.” Tristan turns to Jer. He nods his head in agreement.

“I want Mina to go with us.” Jer says, looking at me. “What do you think about a flight out to New York?”

“I’ve never been on a plane.” I shrug my shoulders.

“Well my dear, there’s a first time for everything. I’ll make the arrangements right away. Jack has a nice loft there. You’ll like it. Maybe we can get some sightseeing in while we’re there.” Tristan pats my shoulder and smiles before leaving the room. I’m trying not to get too excited about going to New York. I really just want to jump up and down with excitement. Play it cool Mina. Suddenly I feel something vibrating and realize it’s my phone. I check my phone and see a text from Jack.

Jack: Ready for lunch? I got out of my meeting a little early.

Mina: I’ll be right there.

I put my phone back in my pocket. “Ok guys, I need to meet with Jack. I’ll be back after lunch.”

“Oooh... Lunch with the boss.” Reed says jokingly. The guys laugh and I blush.

“Wow boys. So mature.” I say sarcastically. I laugh with them before leaving the office. I walk with Jack across the street to a cute little bistro. We both order soup and panini.

“How’s your first day going?” Jack asks before taking a bite.

“I think I’m going to like this. We found the security issue with New York. Tristan wants me to go there.” I take a drink of my green tea. Jack nods his head.

“So I hear. Good work with that. We’ll go in two days. The arrangements are all underway. The loft has a couple bedrooms so you can stay there with me.” Jack checks his phone before answering. He looks at me then across the street. “We’ll be right there.” Jack puts his phone in his pocket. “I’m sorry Mina, we need to get back to the office right away. We have a situation.” We stand and walk across the street. In the lobby is a rogue wolf, he’s in his wolf form. He’s growling and snarling at anyone who comes near him. I look around and see a mix of wolves and humans.

Shit.
