Bodyguard to the Alpha

Something happened between Jer and Mina and neither one of them are saying a word. I keep reminding myself that I have no right to be jealous, but I am. I can’t help it. We have spent all day at the office going through personnel files, looking for any kind of link to another pack.

“Jer, did you go through this list?” I ask, handing him a file folder. He snatches the folder from me and quickly glances at the names, before handing it back to me.

“Yes, I checked that an hour ago.” He snaps at me. My patience is wearing thin.

“What the hell is your problem?” If he says anything about Mina, I will kick his ass.

“It’s nothing. Mind your own business for once.”

“Did something happen with Mina?” I need to know. Jer stops tapping on his computer and looks at me.

“What did she say?” He asks, suddenly looking guilty.

“Plenty.” I can feel Apollo pacing. He’s just as pissed as I am.

“I’m sorry Jack. I don’t know what came over me. It won’t happen again.” I stood and grabbed Jer by the throat and pinned him against the wall.

“Don’t touch her again.” I growl lowly so he knows I mean it. I let him go and he reached for his throat and started coughing. Mina walks in with Jer still gasping for air.

“What’s going on here?” She asks, looking between me and Jer. Jer stands and quickly exits the room. Without a word, I take my seat and resume looking through the files. Mina takes the seat beside me and places her hand on my arm. “Jack. Talk to me. What’s going on?” I don’t have any claim on Mina. I’m trying to ignore these feelings I have for her, but the more I’m around her, the harder things are. I pull my arm from her grasp.

“I would be more careful if I were you. You’re only 17 and wouldn’t want to get mixed up with someone before you know your mate.” I grab the files and storm off. I need fresh air and a run and Central Park is just down the street. I exit the building and head toward the park. I’m disappointed that Mina chose Jer. I would have wanted to be her first choice. Jer is so different from me and he gets all the girls. Apparently, he’s charming and the ladies can’t resist. I prefer to have more meaningful relationships with women. I hear my phone ring and realize I’ve missed calls from Mina, Sawyer, and Jer. Shit! I call Sawyer back.

“Jack! Where are you? We found him!” Sawyer sounds panicked.

“I’m by the park. I’ll head back now.” I say as I quickly head back to the building.

“The park? Who’s with you?”

“No one. I needed some fresh air.” I can hear Sawyer pacing. Probably should have told someone I was leaving or had someone follow me. I turn the corner and I’m met with three large men. Wolves. “Sawyer, can you step outside the building? Now.” I slow my pace. I don’t want to fight them in public in case I need to shift.

“Hello... Alpha.” One of the men says as I approach them.

“Gentlemen. Clearly you know who I am.” I say as I hold my head up, approaching the men. I feel Mina’s presence before I see her. Mina approaches, standing next to me with the men surrounding us. Her eyes are black, her wolf is close to the surface. One of the men approaches Mina, and reaches out to touch her hair. Before he gets a chance she pushes him up against the brink building next to us and bends his arm behind his back nearly dislocating his shoulder. The other two start to approach and Mina gives a low growl. The men stop in their tracks. I turn to look at the men and touch Mina’s shoulder. “I think it’s time for us to leave you.” Mina let’s go of her hostage and stands beside me. The men are shocked at her small size and immense strength. We head back to the building together, once inside I stop and pull Mina to me. With my arms wrapped around her small frame I breathe her in and kiss the top of her head. I feel her arms tighten around me. Sweet Mina. Sawyer joins us in the lobby and shows me a picture of the guard responsible for the intrusion. It’s the man Mina held against the side of the building. I release Mina and take her hand in mine.

“I want everyone to be on the lookout for this person and to apprehend him if they get the chance.” Mina says to Sawyer. “If I had known he was the traitor I wouldn’t have let him go.”

“Don’t worry, Mina, we’ll find him. Stay with Jack.” Sawyer pats her shoulder and heads out.

“Mina, let’s wait for the men at the apartment. I’ll reach out to the Alpha of Dawnguard pack about a place to hold and question the traitor.” I put my arm around her shoulder and Mina nods in acknowledgement.

We walk into the apartment and I look for the Dawnguard’s phone number on my contact list on my tablet. As I scroll through the list of Alpha’s I look up to see Mina pacing. I know she’s kicking herself over what happened on the street. We had no idea he was the traitor we were looking for. I feel a pull to her that I’ve never had with another woman before. I’m doing me best to stay at arm’s length from her, but I’m not doing a very good job of it. I want to go to her now and hold her, reassure her that the guys will find him. Instead, I find the phone number for Alpha Josiah of the Dawnguard pack and make the call.

“This is Alpha Jacques of the Moonvalley Pack. I need to speak with Alpha Josiah right away.”

“This is Alpha Josiah. Jacques, what’s going on? What do you need brother?” His words are music to my ears.

“Josiah we are currently on the hunt for wolf that has conspired against me. He allowed a human into my office building here in NY, and he attempted to steal information. My bodyguard and I ran into earlier, but didn’t realize he was the guilty party until after he took off. Once we capture him, we need to question him. Can we use your dungeon to do so?” I hate asking for help, but I helped Josiah a few years ago with a business venture. Since then his bank account has more than tripled.

“My dungeon is your dungeon. I’m happy to help any way I can. Do you need some men to help look for him? I can send my best trackers to help.” Josiah is a good Alpha and ally.

“I’ll let you know soon if I need your help. I am hoping to get a call soon from my men.”

“Ok. Keep me posted. We have your back.”

“Thank you Alpha.” I hang up and begin pacing again. Come on guys, find him already. I look over and see Mina looking out the window, deep in thought. Apollo is itching to be close to her, to comfort her.

Not now Apollo. She doesn’t need us to confuse her further.

Jack, come on. Look at her. I need to be closer to Nova. Nova chooses us.

And when she turns 18 in a couple months and I’m not her mate, then what?

What if we are mates? You know you want to be closer to her. You feel a pull to her.

Apollo whines but stops arguing with me. I go to my office to pace, away from Mina. Her presence, whatever that perfume is that she uses it’s intoxicating. I need to be clear headed right now. I check my phone for the100th time. Finally! A call from Sawyer.

“Yes! Do you have him?” I ask impatiently. Sawyer is breathing heavily and tries to catch his breath.

“Yes Alpha. We have him. What do you want us to do with him?”

“Meet me at the Dawnguard pack just outside the city. Jericho knows where the pack is located. Mina and I will be there.” I inform him as I grab my keys and head out to get Mina.

“We’ll see you there.”

“Mina! They have him. Let’s go meet them.” Mina follows me out to the car. Once we get on our way I hear Mina take a deep breath and sigh.

“Jack, excuse me for being so blunt, you seem to be unusually distant. I am sorry about letting him go. If I had known he was the one we were looking for I never wouldn’t have...”

“Mina, I meant what I said earlier. It’s not your fault. I’m not mad at you.” I sigh, how do I explain this without sounding like a jerk? “Look, Mina, if I’m distant, it’s not because of anything you have said or done. I’m just trying to protect myself and you.” She sighs again and crosses her arms.

What the hell does that mean? ‘I’m just trying to protect myself and you.’ Sounds like bullshit to me. First Jericho gets handsy at the club then proceeds to completely ignore me. Then Jack is all sweet and holds me after the incident with the wolves just to ignore me. Maybe these two are more trouble than they’re worth. I mean seriously! They can’t seem to decide if they like me or hate me.

Nova, what the hell is the deal with these two?

They are obviously conflicted Mina, you know I like Apollo. Who do you like?

I don’t know Nova. I like them both differently.

Ok... there’s nothing saying you have to pick someone right now. You have two men who clearly like you and you like them. Let’s just see how this plays out.

Ugh! That’s not much help at all. Actually it’s no help. I guess I don’t need to choose someone right now. I just hate the not knowing. Mina let’s get your head straight. There’s Alpha Jack. He brought me out of Deadtooth pack, he made me his personal bodyguard and head of security, and is paying an enormously large salary. Then there’s Jericho. Oh Jericho. Honestly there’s just the club incident and then him ignoring me. I could easily see myself with either one of them. Damn men.

We pull up to the Dawnguard pack and Jack takes a quick at me then gets out of the car without a word. Sawyer, Reed, and Jericho pull up beside us. I get out of the car and follow them up to the pack house. Alpha Josiah joins us and shakes hands with Jack and Jericho.

“It’s good to see you two again. Jer, I’m pretty sure Maggie is still single.” Josiah chuckles and nudges Jericho. Jericho turns to look at me.

“I’m not here to see Maggie.” He whispers.

“Well, maybe another time.” He pats Jericho on the shoulder. “Come fellas. Let’s take care of your problem.” Sawyer and Reed head to the car to get the traitor and follow Josiah and Jack to the dungeon.

“Jer, what are you..”

“Mina, I owe you an apology. I should not have been so forward at the club last night. I also should not have ignored you today.”

“Thank you Jer. Maybe we should just start over.” I say shrugging my shoulders.

“Hmm, I don’t know.” He leans in and whispers in my ear. “I kind of don’t want to forget how your body felt against me.” His chuckles confirms the look of surprise on my face. I have never been spoken too in this manner.

“Look Jer... I.” I pause. Jack is here, I can sense his presence. Looking around Jericho I can see Jack staring angrily at us. Jericho turns around and places himself between me and Jack.

“So this is where you two have been hiding. Needed some alone time I see.”

“Jack, it’s not what you..” I start to explain but Jericho interrupts.

“Yes, brother, we did need a moment to have a private conversation. Is that a problem?”

“It’s a problem when work needs to be done. Your presence is requested so that we may continue our interrogation of the traitor. Is this going to be a problem?” Jack asks, looking at between me and Jericho.

“No, Alpha. This isn’t an issue at all. Right Mina dear?” Jericho steps beside me and puts his arm around me. Oh hell no. I step away from Jericho.

“Ok listen. I am not going to be a pawn between you two. I am a person not a toy to be tossed between you two. I will not be used ever again. Do I make myself clear gentlemen?” They both look dejected and bow their head before speaking.

“Mina, I’m so sorry.” Jericho looks to the ground.

“I never meant to put you in this position.” Jack starts and I put both hands up.

“This conversation is done. I realize it wasn’t intentional but that’s what you both have done.” I take a deep breath. “Now gentlemen, I believe we have work to do. Jack, can you please lead the way to the dungeon?”

“Yes, Mina. Right this way.” Both are quiet as we walk around to the back of the house to a separate building. It’s not what I think of as a dungeon. The building is just plain on the outside. When you walk inside, the walls are white, each cell has a bunk bed, toilet and sink. The cell bars are thick with electronic locks.

“Mina.” Jack places his hand on my arm stopping me from walking further into the dungeon.

“I want you to know I never meant to make you feel like a toy. I really am very sorry for making you feel like a thing to be used. You are an amazing wolf, and I am very grateful to have you on my team. I want you to know that.”

“I know Jack. Honestly, I do. You have been nothing but kind to me until today. I can’t go back to what I was before. I just... I can’t. I will not be used as I was before. Whatever this is between you and your brother, I don’t want to be in the middle of it. I want nothing to do with a sibling issue.” His hand is still on my arm and I place my hand on his. “We’re good Jack.” Jack takes a deep breath and I follow him to the cell.

The prisoner has been roughed up a bit. Apparently he did not come easily with the men. Sawyer had seen him first and was the in fast pursuit. Reed and Jericho managed to flank Sawyer and the three of them had him trapped. His partners in crime where nowhere to be seen. Maybe with a little persuasion we will get some info on them. Reed informed us that once they were able to tackle him the ground, which took all three of them, he bit Reed! Who does that? It didn’t break the skin but I made Reed show me his hand where he was bitten just to be sure he was ok. As much as I already enjoy working with these big guys, I would love to see them happily mated. Maybe I would get a few friends out of their mates. Jack and Jericho both roll up there sleeves before the interrogation begins. I’m standing in front of Sawyer and Reed and I can tell the prisoner is trying to size me up. He hasn’t taken his eyes off of me since I walked up to his cell. I stand with my arms crossed and feet apart. Let this idiot say something stupid so I can beat his ass. I glance at Sawyer and Reed and they are standing the same way as I am. I don’t know why this strikes me as funny. It’s all I can do to not laugh.

“So... who’s the girl?” He finally asks. There’s something very familiar about this wolf that I can’t place my finger on. His smell, the sound of his voice, even his eyes.

“Why do you want to know?” I am not telling this guy anything until we know who we’re dealing with.

“Well you kicked my ass earlier, with help from your wolf. Seeing you with the guys, you’re clearly in a role of leadership. So...” He shrugs his shoulder. “I’m curious. Who are you?”

“She’s not the one you should be concerned about at the moment.” Jericho chimes in. He has a variety of tools with him for torture. I’ve never seen these men interrogate anyone but I really didn’t expect torture.

“Hmm. That’s too bad.” He turns and looks at me licking his lips. “I like my women strong.” I raise an eyebrow.

“You couldn’t handle this.” I say plainly. He chuckles and I caught a glimpse of Jack eyeing me. Ok... I may be bluffing right now. But no one needs to know that. Be a bad ass Lumina Emerson. Be. A. Badass.

“Enough small talk asshole. Let’s start with something simple. What’s your name?” Jack asks. He turns to look at Jack, then back to me.

“I’m Cletus. What’s your name beautiful?” Gross. I turn my nose up at him.

“Why did you allow for a human to get inside my building to steal information?” Jack continues, ignoring his statement.

“Because I wanted to take you down... Alpha.” Cletus says to Jack. He leans back in his chair and crosses his legs. He seems a little too relaxed for my liking.

“Why?” I ask. I know Jericho and Jack are leading this interrogation, and I honestly didn’t mean to say anything. It just came out. But when Cletus answered... I am pretty sure I stopped breathing for a moment. The five of us exchanged the same shocked expression.

“Holy shit.” Jacks says what we’re all thinking. This is can’t be good.
