The Return

“What did you just say?” I can’t believe what I’ve heard.

“I said it’s because his father killed my father, and I’m going to make sure that I exact his revenge for his untimely death.” he says. He looks from Jack to Jericho and fixes his eyes on me. “You smell like you’ve got Deadtooth blood in you.” I knew I smelled something familiar about him when I encountered him earlier, but I never could have imagined that it would have been from Deadtooth. I couldn’t quite place him, though. He was familiar, but not someone I knew.

“Was, I am part of Moonvalley now,” I say. I can feel the palms of my hands sweating under his intense scrutiny.

“You don’t know who I am, do you?” he says. With his eyes still fixed on me, he leans forward onto the table and Jack steps in between us.

“Why don’t you tell us who you are. My father killed no one without cause. I would like to be informed of your real identity,” he says.

Cletus chuckles and smiles a wicked smile, the very tip of his tongue showing between his teeth. “Cletus Gilbert, supposed younger twin brother of Alpha Otis Gilbert. Does that ring a bell?” Jack stiffens, and his face hardens. I look at Jericho, who is also on edge.

“Mina, Jericho, can I speak with you outside?” Jack says. We walk out to the hall and Jack looks concerned. “I thought Cletus was dead. Mina, you know more about this than I would,” he says as he looks at me with dark eyes.

I looked from Jack to Jericho and back. “I was an Omega. Omegas aren’t told much. The rumors were that Otis killed him though.” I shrugged. It wasn’t a lie. I did not know what happened to Cletus. He disappeared and everyone assumed Otis had killed him because his father was having second thoughts about him being the next Alpha over Cletus. I wasn’t really old enough to have an opinion on the matter, but many thought that the the wrong brother had been promoted, and that Cletus should have been the one to carry on the Deadtooth Alpha-blood. I picked my fingers when I realized I was going to have to get over ‘used to be an Omega’ and start being the one that they come to for knowledge. Now I need to figure out how I can become the one that knows things, I decide.

Jericho clears his throat. “Well, I guess we have a couple of ways we can take this interrogation. We can torture him until we get the information that we need, or we can leave him sitting until he’s ready to talk, either here or back at Moonvalley.”

“I think it would be a better idea to bring him back to Moonvalley. We need to observe him. He has already tried to kill me once today. Plus, he threatened my company. I don’t want to put Dawnguard at risk anymore than I have to. Jericho, how quickly can you wrap things up with the new security team?” Jack asks. He’s all business, and I can tell he’s planning his next plan of action.

"It’s going to take some time. I can stay here longer so that you can take Cletus back to Moonvalley.” Jericho looks as disappointed as he sounds. Jack looks pleased with Jericho’s decision to stay behind to take care of things here.

“Mina, let’s get ready to transport Cletus back to Moonvalley. We can interrogate him further at home," Jacks says. I look from Jericho to Jack and take a deep breath.

“Do we have to torture him? I want to get information from him before we go that far.” I say, drawing my eyebrows together in concern for Cletus. I know I’m out of line, but I can’t bear to think of someone from my old pack being tortured, even if he might deserve it.

“I will let you try, but, if he so much as thinks about touching you, I’ll rip him from limb to limb,” Jack says through his clenched teeth. Jericho takes notice of Jack’s rage and furrows his brow.

“Jack, I’m not sure that’s a good idea. What if he hurts her?”

“Jericho, I can take care of myself. Jack hired me to be head of security for a reason,” I retort, anger coming from nowhere. I don’t understand why I’m feeling so pissed off at the rebuttal from Jericho. Maybe it’s because it feels like he’s trying to control what parts of my job I do, maybe it’s because I want to be looked at as strong and dependable leader despite my short time here and prior status.

“Ok, ok.” Jericho says with his hands up in surrender. “I don’t doubt your abilities to kick ass. I’ve seen you in action. I also don’t think you should be in unnecessary danger.” He shrugged his shoulders. “I’m sure Jack feels the same.” Jack nodded in agreement.

“He’s right, Mina, but I’ll be by your side. Jer, I want Sawyer to stay with you. Let’s get the situation wrapped up and get everyone home. Mina, let’s get our prisoner home and on our turf. I’ll have Evan and Taylor meet us at the airport for extra security. Between me, you, and Reed, Cletus won’t have a chance.” Jericho and I nodded our heads in agreement and joined the others. It’s moments like this that I’m reminded Jack is an Alpha. His commanding tone and reassuring presence put me at ease with the decision. I let myself picture a life with him. What would it be like to be his Luna? I let it go as soon as I thought of it. Focus, Mina.

Jack informed the others of the plan while Jericho called the pilot to get us back to Centralia. Within the hour, we were back on the tarmac, Jack escorting a handcuffed Cletus to his seat on the plane. I decide to sit next to Cletus so that we can talk on the way back. I stop at his row and Jack sends a glare my way, almost like he’s warning me about sitting close to him. I smile in a way that he knows everything will be okay. ”I’ll be watching you,” he says through our mind link. I nod my head and Jack sits a couple of rows back in the plane’s rear.

“Cletus, do you mind if I sit here with you?” He looks at me as if he’s contemplating his answer. I smile, trying to reassure him I mean no harm.

“Suit yourself, sweetheart. It’s better you than that asshole alpha,” he says. I sit down in the seat next to him and fasten my seat belt. “What in Goddess’s name even possessed you to want to work for that cunt, anyway?” I shoot him a look of annoyance.

“He’s not a cunt Cletus.” I roll my eyes at his borderline offensive comment. “I was the youngest daughter of Deadtooths’ Omega family, I would not get very far there and you know that. When Jack asked me if I wanted to be his head of security, I knew it was my ticket out. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get away from being an Omega. I know you grew up in an Alpha family, but you can’t even imagine how horrible the treatment is for an Omega family. Alpha Otis treated us even worse when he took over." I can tell I hit a nerve with my comment about Otis. Cletus looks out the window and my stomach turns as we take off. I wish I would have brought my motion sickness pills, but I’ll just have to deal with it. Talking with Cletus will hopefully keep my mind off of the travel. "What happened to you back then, if you don’t mind me asking.”

“I do mind you asking,” he says with a heavy sigh. “I guess it will come out anyway, so you’re as good a person to tell as any.” He takes a deep breath and closes his eyes for a few moments. “I’m not sure how much you know about the Delacroix family, but the Gilberts and the Delacroixs used to be pretty close, even had a few mates from the two families over the years. We share a border, so it was easier to join forces than to fight each other, I guess. There was a treaty between the Deadtooth and Moonvalley since the start of our time here.

“It all began with the original founders of the two packs, Alphas Clyde Gilbert and Abraham Delacroix. They both had split from their mother packs overseas and came to the Americas to start new lives, new packs with just a handful of people. Clyde and Abraham became fast friends on the two-month journey here. They decided they wanted to make sure that they lived close enough to see each other often, and they did. They set up our lands far from others, so that we could build our lives in peace. Some documents mention a bond so close between the two that some thought they were mates, but such things were unheard of back then, especially between two alphas. The two other packs that built near us were a welcomed addition of new bloodlines. The alliance between Deadtooth and Moonvalley only strengthened from there. We lived in complete peace and harmony with each other for almost 300 years, until Alpha Ignatius murdered my father, Alpha Finn Gilbert.

“I’m not sure what happened before I got to the Alpha War Table, but since I wasn’t next in line, there was no open space for me to take part in the planning. I was coming to inform them the rogues breached the southern border of Deadtooth when I found Ignatius standing over my father, covered in blood. I was so fucking pissed and I would have attacked him myself, but a rogue got to him before I could. At first I was just going to let it rip Ignatius apart, but that’s not how my father raised me, so I was running over to help, but a rogue took me from the side. I fought him off, but I was too late to save Ignatius. If I stayed, I knew that the new Moonvalley Alpha, Jack, wouldn’t believe me I hadn’t killed his father and would tear me apart, pitting Otis and Jack against each other. I couldn’t be the reason that the treaty between our packs ceased to exist. I staged my death and headed to New York, where I’ve been hiding and contemplating this operation to bring Jack down since. I miss my brother. I wasn’t even there when our mother passed! I’m no better than a filthy rogue.” Cletus hangs his head. I could hear his ragged breathing as his shoulders shook.

“Cletus,” I say, as I gently place my hand on his shoulder. I can tell that being separated from Deadtooth has taken its toll on him. “You had just seen your father dead. I’m sure it was a shock to your system. We can have Otis come see you when we get back to Centralia.” I smile a small smile, not knowing if that is actually going to be possible.

“You’d do that for me after I did all of this to Jack? I would be grateful to see Otis,” he said, eyes filled with unshed tears and hope.

Jack appears by my side. “You’re going to get your wish, Cletus. There’s been an attack. Tristan is moving the entire Deadtooth pack to the Centralia packhouse to keep them safe.” Jack shoots me a look of concern. “Otis was wounded, and it doesn’t look good. We need to get Cletus to him as soon as possible,” he says through our mind link. I nod my head. “We’ll be landing in about 20 minutes,” he says, then turns and walks back to his seat.

“Cletus, I’m going to go speak to Jack, okay?” He nods and wipes an unruly tear from his cheek. I smile, knowing he will want some space to compose himself before we land. I walk back and slide into the seat next to Jack. “How bad is it?”

“Rogues have completely taken over, Mina. They’ve burned down the Alpha house, Beta Brian barely escaped with Otis, and they killed his mate. I’m moving the security team and a lot of the older single members into my father’s old house for the time being to free up space for the Deadtooth refugees,” he says. I can see the hurt in his eyes with this prospect. “All of our things are being packed and moved right now and should be there by the time we get there.”

“What about my brother?”

“If you want your family there, I’ll have them moved as well.”

“They’re all okay?” I feel guilty that for a split second I hoped my father hasn’t survived.

“Yes. That was the first thing I asked about after Tristan told me about the attack. Your brother has some scrapes and bruises, but he’s going to be fine.” I can tell something is bothering him.

“Is everything okay? I don’t want there to be any animosity between us because of what happened in New York.” Jack looks up at me, his beautiful green eyes flash with an emotion I can’t quite place.

“Mina, I’m going to be honest with you. I am extremely attracted to you. I am constantly fighting with myself not to push you against the wall and mark you as my own. There are only a couple of issues with this. One, you’re not old enough to find your mate yet, and two, I want to maintain our professional relationship.” My eyes search his and swallow the lump that’s lodged in my throat.

“Jack, I,” I start, not sure how to react to his confession. “I don’t know what to say. I think you’re amazing. I-”

The pilot interrupted my thoughts, and I looked up in surprise. “We’ll be landing in just a few moments. Please make sure you have your seat belts fastened. Welcome back to Centralia.”

I looked back to Jack, but I could tell that he had already put up the wall that kept things between us professional. The disappointment I feel surprises me. He wanted me, but why? I knew there was little chance that I could be his mate. There’s no way I would take a chance when I knew I wouldn’t be able to take the heartache that would be sure to follow when he found his actual mate.

“But what if we are his mate?” Nova intrudes into my thoughts.

“Nova please. I know you are eager to find our mate, as am I, but until I’m 18, there’s no way that Jack would even look at me.”

“Obviously, he has looked at you. He said he wanted to push you up against a wall and mark you. That’s not something a man that hasn’t looked at a woman would say.”

“He’s just thinking with his dick, Nova. Just like Jericho the other night in the club. I’m done with this conversation. Jack has clarified that he wants to remain professional, that’s what I intend to do.” Nova was not happy with how I had spoken to her and withdrew from me all together. She’s so damn moody, hopefully by my birthday, she’ll calm down.

The plane touches down, and we come to a stop on the tarmac. I walk down the stairs with Cletus and Tristan is standing next to a black SUV, ready to take us to the hospital. I opened the door for Cletus to get in and click the child safety lock to prevent him from opening the door from the inside. Better safe than sorry. We ride to the hospital in silence, Tritan and Jack having a discussion via link. We pull up in front of the Centralia General Hospital and Tristan stops to let us out.

“Alpha Jack, this way,” says a man in a white jacket, who I’m assuming is a doctor. We follow him through a set of doors that says ICU. “Alpha Otis is in room 164,” he says, pointing at a room at the end of the hall.

“Cletus, do you want me to go in with you?”

“Please. I don’t know that I can do this alone,” he says. Jack grabs my hand as I walk away. The electricity zaps through my arm and I look back at him. I can tell he can feel it too, but I need to respect his wishes to remain professional. I smile a quick small smile and turn back to walk into the room with Cletus.

He opens the door and we can see Otis connected to a lot of machines, and there are tubes and IVs seemingly everywhere. I can see Cletus’s chin tremble and I put my small hand into his as a sign of solidarity and a measure of comfort. Cletus squeezes my hand just enough to let me know he appreciates my small gesture before letting go. Cletus sits in the chair next to his brother and takes his hand.

“Otis, what the hell did you do, you fucking idiot,” he says, tears now freely flowing down his cheeks. “You turned your back on everything that our father taught you and became a drunkard, and now you’ve lost our ancestral home. I swear to the Goddess, when you make it out of this, I’m going to kill you.” Cletus sniffles and wipes the back of his hand across his nose, trying to get it to stop running. It pains my heart to see him in such pain over Otis, even tho he had tried to take Jack down, he was still a member of my former pack.

A tear slides down my cheek and I feel an arm snake around my shoulders. I look up and see Jack wrapping me in a warm hug. I burry my face into his chest and silently let the tears fall, knowing that Otis will not make it out of this room alive.
