Chapter 27

“Goodnight Thomas!” I said as I kissed his forehead, tucking him into his bed.

“Goodnight Izzie!” He said smiling up at me. I smiled down at him, before exiting the room, turning the main light off, making sure to leave a small lamp on for him so he wouldn’t get scared at night.

I then left the room sighing in annoyance at the thought of having to sleep in the same room as Shauna. I knew Shauna was going to be pissed off when she finds out as well.

I walked inside the room to find Shauna scowling at me. “Dimitri was looking for you. He said it was urgent. He just came and left.” She said with a disgusted look on her face towards me.

I didn’t even bother replying to her, I just left wondering why Dimitri was looking for me. I decided to go find him. He was probably in his room and so I went there. I was right when I saw him sitting on his bed, clutching his head in what looked to be pain.

He lifted his head up when he heard me entering. “Isabella, I was looking for you.” He said, gesturing for me to come closer to him. “It’s starting to happen again. I can feel the pain growing and spreading.” He said as he hissed in pain. “I was wondering if you could stay here again. You’re probably mad at me and I’m sorry for being an ass for not giving you another room, but I will give you one. Just please stay here with me tonight. I need you! I really do. There’s just something about you that helps relieve some of the pain I feel. So please, can you stay tonight?” He asked, looking desperately up at me. I could hear the pain and hope in his voice as he asked me to stay and I just couldn’t deny. I didn’t want him to suffer like that again.

“I’ll stay. But on one condition.” I said causing him to abruptly look up at me.

“Anything.” He said, looking like he was in even more pain now then before. It seemed to be growing fast. I almost felt bad for what I was going to say, but I needed to.

“I’ll stay, but only if you tell me everything. Everything about why this happens to you, about your family, everything.” I said, causing a look of surprise to cross his face before an upset frown set on his face.

“I can’t Isabella! Please don’t make me do that!” He pleaded, making me feel very guilty. I sighed giving in. I couldn’t be that horrible and make him tell me something he didn’t want to.

“Fine.” I sighed, causing him to smile a painful smile at me.

“Thank you.” He said, grabbing onto my hand and tugging me forward. He tugged me so hard, that I practically fell on him. I made it to move back, but Dimitri wrapped his arms around my waist before I could, keeping me in place.

I wrapped my arms around his back, resting my head on his shoulder. I could feel the warmth radiating off his body and into me, making me feel all nice and warm. It was nice.

Dimitri suddenly groaned in pain, causing me to immediately pull back, but he instantly stopped me from doing so. “Please don’t. You’re helping with the pain.” He whispered, tightening his hold on me. I relaxed in his hold again, and started running my fingers down his back as I felt small tremors run through him. I gently rubbed his back up and down, relaxing his tense muscles.

I then slipped my hand up his neck and into his hair. He sighed as I did that, relaxing even more. I continued to gently run my fingers through his soft, black strands. “That feels so good.” He whispered causing me to smile.

“How’s the pain?” I asked softly.

“It’s slowly fading away. I honestly don’t get how you do it.” He said, his voice sending light vibrations through me.

“That’s good.” I whispered, closing my eyes and inhaling his wonderful manly scent, now that I didn’t have to worry about him being in pain, since it was seeming to fade away.

“It’s like you stopped the pain in its track.” He continued on sending more vibrations through me, which caused me to sigh now because of how good it felt.

“I’m amazing, what can I say.” I said, smiling at him as I pulled away to look at him. The smile washed off my face as I realized how close we were again. Our noses could practically touch if we moved closer. He had a serious look on his face now too as his eyes ran over my every feature.

I wanted to look away but he was just so damn good looking, it was hard to. Curse Dimitri and his good looks. He shouldn’t be this attractive. And he was even more attractive up close like this because I could see every part of him in detail. I could see the different shades of red swirling in his eyes, the sharp angle of his defined jaw, the little lines in his lips, his long, dark lashes. Everything about him could be inspected from being up this close.

I needed something to say, to break this silence. The silence wasn’t necessarily bad but I just needed something to say to distract me from his good looks. So I blurted out the first thing that could come to mind. “How old are you?” I asked.

“Didn’t I already tell you?” He asked, raising an eyebrow up at me, causing me to blush. I honestly had no idea why I was blushing. I had no reason to. But I was for some reason.

“Yeah you did. 235 wasn’t it? But I’m talking in human years. Because you obviously don’t look like your 235. So if you could tell me your age in human years, how much would you be?” I asked as I unconsciously ran one of my fingers through the strands of his hair, near his forehead, twisting it.

“21 years old.” He said and I nodded my head. He did look like he was 21. “How old are you?” He asked.

“Well you see, I’m like 345 years old.” I said grinning at him. He smiled, shaking his head in amusement.

“Wow, that’s really old!” He exclaimed, grinning back at me.

“I’m not that old, gosh Dimitri. I may be 345 years old but in human years I’m only 18.” I said, rolling my eyes as I moved off him, and sat down beside him on the bed.

“18? You sure? You look more like you’re 12.” He said chuckling, causing me to gasp and start to protest.

“Excuse me, Mr. Dimitri but are you trying to imply that I’m flat-chested?” I demanded, regretting saying that as Dimitri’s gaze travelled down to my chest, openly staring. Did he honestly have no shame?

“I wasn’t implying that actually. I was referring to how you were arguing with me like a 12 year old earlier on in the day.” He said sounding quite serious now.

“Yeah okay, sure.” I said, not really believing him.

“I actually wasn’t. And you’re not even flat. You’re breasts are quite big actually.” He said causing me to blush and smack him when I noticed his gaze focused on my chest.

“Stop!” I said, pulling the blanket up to cover myself, causing him to chuckle at my shy and awkwardness.

“Sorry. I was just saying cause you said I was implying that your flat-chested when I wasn’t so-”

“I get it.” I said cutting him off, leaving us both in silence. Dimitri stared off at the wall, while I looked down at my fingers resting in my lap.

“Dimitri.” I started quietly. “Why do you kill humans? What’s the real reason?” I turned my head to look at him and found him looking down at the bed sheet.

“That’s none of your business.” He answered back but he didn’t sound angry or pissed at me for asking that. He sounded pretty dejected.

“You’ve always said that killing was a hobby to you, something you seem to enjoy. But it isn’t something you like. You don’t enjoy it. I know you don’t.” I stated causing him to stay quiet. “Why Dimitri?”

“I have no choice. Let’s leave it at that.” He said causing me to shake my head.

“You can’t just leave it at that. And if you have no choice, maybe I can help you.” I said and he sighed shaking his head.

“Dimitri-”

“Isabella it’s not as fucking simple as you think it is!” He suddenly burst out in anger, causing me to flinch. “Nothing can be done about it!”

“Well maybe if you told me then I’d understand if it’s impossible to fix or not. But just at least give me a chance. Maybe I actually can help you fix it.” I suggested but he just growled in frustration.

“Dimitri, please calm down.” I said resting my hand gently on his arm, causing him to push it away. “Dimitri, you’ve killed so many of my kind! I deserve to know everything! I deserve to know why!”

“Look I’m sorry! I’m sorry for doing that. I never wanted to do it but I still take full responsibility for it. Because I did have a choice. I was just selfish all those years and didn’t want to take the selfless route. And I’m sorry for that. But you know what, it doesn’t matter anymore. You won’t have to worry about me killing you humans anymore. I’ll be leaving this world soon enough and things will hopefully return back to normal, as they were a couple centuries ago.” Dimitri bitterly said, causing me to gasp.

“You don’t mean that.” I said as I crawled up in front of him, taking one of his hands into mine. “You can’t mean that you’re just going to let yourself die.”

“I really don’t understand why you don’t want me to die. Your life will be easier. Everyone’s lives will be easier.” Dimitri said.

“Because, you’re not a horrible person Dimitri. You’re definitely not who I thought you were. You’re not cruel, you’re not brutal. That’s just an image that’s been created of you because no one knows that you don’t willingly kill. You kill because you have no choice. I don’t know the reason why, but from what I know and have learned about you, I know that you wouldn’t purposely do something like that. You’re a good person, Dimitri. You let my family go, no matter how hard it must have been for you. I know it was hard, but you did it. And you’re paying for it. Through the pain you feel.” As soon as I said the last sentence, his eyes widened in shock.

“How do you know?” He instantly asked.

“So it’s true. The pain you feel is caused by you not killing humans.” I said, causing him to remain quiet.

“Dimitri, I’ve figured that much out already. So why can’t you tell me the rest? Why does this happen? What’s the reason behind this?” I asked causing him to look so stricken.

“Isabella, you can’t fix this.” He whispered, but I shook my head. I leaned forward, making sure to look straight into his eyes.

“How do you know? You haven’t even given me the chance to try. Please Dimitri! I want to help you. We may not be the greatest of friends, well actually I don’t even know if we can call us friends. But anyways, the point isn’t whether we’re friends or not, the point is that I know you’re a good person and I care about you. I know, I know, I can’t believe it either. But I do care about you. You don’t deserve the pain. You don’t deserve the guilt. You don’t deserve feeling lonely. You don’t deserve any of that.” I said, hoping he’d understand.

He quietly stared back at me before he slowly lifted his right hand, and gently cupped the side of my face. His thumb lightly caressing my cheek. “I care about you too Isabella, as hard as that may be to believe. But I do care about you and that’s why I don’t want to tell you. I don’t want to get you involved in this. I don’t want anything bad to happen to you. I don’t think I’d be able to live with myself knowing I let something happen to you. I can’t risk that Isabella. I’m sorry.” He whispered as he continued caressing my cheek.

I sighed as I leaned in and hugged him. I know I surprised him which is why he suddenly tensed up, before he finally relaxed and hugged me back. “Don’t worry about me Dimitri. Worry about yourself. Think about all of Rovana. They’re all counting on you to rule Rovana. And from what I’ve heard, you’re an amazing King. How do you think everyone will feel, knowing you, a coward, decided to just give up and die?” I knew my words sounded harsh but they needed to be said in order for Dimitri to understand.

“They don’t need me. No one needs me. Everyone’s fine without me so it doesn’t matter. As long as no one gets more hurt because of me. I’ve already hurt hundreds of people. I can’t keep going on like that. I need to stop.” He said sighing.
