Chapter 45

Dimitri and Devon both fell into silence and that’s when I decided to walk in. “Hey, have you guys found anything?” I asked, pretending I didn’t hear anything. I noticed Dimitri jumped a little at my voice. I wanted to yell at him so badly that I was surprised I could keep this calm, nonchalant demeanour.

“We’re still looking.” Dimitri replied quietly, staring down at the floor, avoiding eye contact with both Devon and I. Devon simply glared at Dimitri before mumbling about how he felt tired and needed a break from all this research and so he left, leaving Dimitri and I alone.

I walked up to Dimitri and sat down beside him on the couch. I wasn’t sure if I should hide the fact that I knew what he was planning, or to tell him that I found out.

After a few moments of silence, I decided to hide it. I don’t want him to know that I knew what he was planning, because then he might speed up the process of making me forget. I can also try to change his mind about doing what he’s planning and indirectly make him feel guilty about his decision. Maybe I’ll be able to make him change his mind.

“Are you okay, Dimitri?” I asked, wrapping my arms around his waist and resting my head on his shoulder, all the while looking up at him, closely watching his reaction.

“No. But to be honest, whenever you’re here, it really feels like things might be okay one day. But then when you’re not... it’s like everything becomes chaotic again and can never be fixed. And I’m not saying all that stuff to be romantic, sweet, cheesy or whatever you call it. I’m saying that because it’s true, Isabella.” He said quietly, resting his head on top of mine. “I’ve always felt like there was never any point in me even trying because it just seems impossible. And I never felt like I had a purpose you know. I mean, yes I have to run Rovana but Devon can easily take over that and there really wasn’t ever a need for me to bother trying to live. But now I do have a reason.” He said pausing for a bit before wrapping his right arm around my waist. “And it’s you. And I’m not saying that you need me because you really don’t. You’re strong Isabella, you don’t need anyone to depend on which I really admire about you. But when I say that you’re the reason for me to want to live, it isn’t because I think you can’t live without me or that you need me, but it’s because I want the chance to show you how much you actually mean to me. I want the chance to make you happy. I’ve always wanted that. I wanted to do something good for once in my life after all the horrible things I’ve done. And if I can make one person happy then so be it.”

That was honestly the sweetest thing ever, I couldn’t help but reach up and kiss him. He was absolutely perfect in every way. But Dimitri decided to pull away just as I pressed my lips up against his. “But the reality is, I don’t think there’s a cure for me. The Shadow’s inside of me and it tortures me everyday. It wants you dead. And I’m scared that one day I’ll lose control with you. I can’t even do one good thing in my life which frustrates me to no end.” He said and I could understand why he was so adamant on giving up. He really did think he’d hurt me.

“Dimitri, you won’t hurt me.” I said softly causing him to shake his head.

“You don’t know that Izzie. I could. I don’t trust myself anymore and neither should you.” He said, unwrapping his arm from around my waist and completely pulling away.

“Well guess what Dimitri, I still trust you and I will continue to trust you. I know you can fight the Shadow. And I know we can get rid of it.” I said firmly, knowing it wasn’t making any difference. I could see how the Shadow was starting to have a huge negative effect on Dimitri and his health. He looked exhausted today too, just like yesterday but a little worse if that was even possible. And you could see the shine in his eyes slowly draining out. Demons are always so energized and healthy, but Dimitri looked the complete opposite and I was starting to get really worried. What if I couldn’t save him? I mean, we already couldn’t find anything and we were running out of time.

“Dimitri, I will do absolutely anything for you. You do know that, right? I will help you get through this. And I know we can succeed. You just have to believe we can.” I said grabbing his hand and giving it a light squeeze. “And Dimitri, you’re not a horrible person. You’ve done everything you’ve done because you had no choice. You’re a good person, never think otherwise.” I said cupping his face between my hands, making him look straight at me. “And promise me Dimitri, that you won’t give up. That you will try your hardest to get rid of the Shadow inside of you.”

He didn’t say anything except look away with a guilty look on his face. “Dimitri, you deserve to be happy. But if you’re not willing to try, then how are you going to gain that?” I whispered, the desperation starting to show through my voice.

“I’ll be perfectly content knowing your safe. Knowing that I won’t be able to hurt you. That’s when I’ll be happy. And the only way that seems possible is if you...” He trailed off, burying his face into his hands. “Stay away from me.” He finished mumbling.

“I’m sorry but I can’t do that. And even if I could, I won’t.” I said stubbornly causing him to look up at me.

“I’m giving you a choice Isabella. Either you go back home, to earth on your own, or I force you to go back. And believe me, you don’t want me to force you to go back.” He said firmly and I couldn’t believe it. He wasn’t even going to hide the fact that, that is what he was planning.

“What do you mean force me to go back?” I demanded in anger.

“Force, as in I’ll remove myself from your memories. I’ll remove our love from your memories and replace it with fake memories of me. Fake memories of all the horrific things I’ve done, fake memories of how horrible I am, fake memories about how badly I’ve treated you and all the girls here and how much you hate me. It’s either that, or you willingly choose to go with your memories intact.” He said sternly causing me to gape at him.

“You have no right to mess with my brain like that! And you don’t get to make the choices here. I’ll make my own choices. I control myself, not you.” I said angrily.

“I never said I was controlling you. I’m giving you a choice Isabella. And I’m telling you everything I’m planning on doing. It’s not like I’m hiding anything from you.” He said causing me to shake my head and get up off the sofa.

“No. I do not agree with any of the choices you’re supposedly giving me. Technically you’re not giving me a choice at all. It’s more like you’re blackmailing me! You’re basically saying I have to listen to you or else you’ll do something I completely don’t want.” I exclaimed in protest.

“You have a week to choose. After that, it’s my decision.” He said before getting up and walking out.

“Don’t you dare walk away from me like that!” I exclaimed as I went after him.

“Isabella, leave me alone.” He said causing me to exclaim in anger.

“No I am not going to leave you alone! Not until I get this ridiculous idea out of your mind. You’re being so dumb right now Dimitri, you have no idea!” I said as I followed after him.

“Isabella, you need to start forgetting about me. You need to try and get over me as fast as you can. Or else you’ll hurt. And I don’t want you to hurt. I don’t want you heartbroken. And besides, you’ll find someone else to love down at Earth. Someone you can actually have a future with. Eventually, you won’t even need or want me anymore.” He said as he continued walking, not bothering to look back at me.

“You’re stupid if you think I’ll ever stop hurting. You’re stupid if you think I can get over you in less than a week. You’re stupid if you think I can love anyone after you. You’re stupid if you think there’s someone better than you out there for me. You’re being stupid, Dimitri! Because I can’t Dimitri!” I exclaimed, grabbing onto his arm, stopping him.

“Well, you’re going to have to.” He spoke bitterly, before pulling his arm away and walking into his room, shutting the door behind him.

I stood there standing in shock. I couldn’t believe this. He couldn’t do this. It would be easier for him because he’d die and wouldn’t have to worry about anything. But I’ll be hurting for the rest of my life.

I hated him so much right now. I hated him for making me fall for him. But I hated myself even more for letting myself fall for him.

“Are you okay?” I heard a voice quietly speak. A voice I hadn’t heard in a while. It was Kenneth.

“I’m fine.” I whispered, looking away from him.

“Isabella, I heard what he said to you. Are you sure you’re fine?” He asked, causing me to nod my head when in reality I felt like I was going to break down any second.

“Isabella, you’ll get over him eventually. The way you did with me...” He said trailing off. He was right, I did get over him quite fast but that was because I never truly loved him. I wasn’t going to say that though, that would be so mean of me.

“Can you please leave me alone for now?” I asked quietly, causing him to nod his head and turn to walk away. “I’m so sorry for hurting you Kenneth.” I called back causing him to stop and turn to look at me again.

“I hurt you too, so it’s okay.” He said before walking away.

I noticed Shauna turned into this hallway and walked up to Kenneth saying something. He waved her away causing her to stop. I noticed she looked really upset. Very upset. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Shauna this upset. I don’t like Shauna at all, but something about Shauna seemed really off. She looked genuinely sad and looked about to cry.

So I decided to walk up to her. “What’s wrong Shauna?” I asked, noticing she actually was crying.

“It’s none of your business!” She snapped at me, wiping her tears away. “You’re probably really happy to see me crying, aren’t you?”

“Not really, no.” I replied. “Now what’s wrong?” I asked, causing her to stare back at me, probably trying to contemplate whether I was being genuine or just using her sad state to my advantage.

“Why do you care?” She asked quietly. “All I am is a rude bitch to you. That’s all I am to anyone. You should be happy seeing me like this. In fact, everyone should be.”

“Because I’m not that horrible of a person. Yes we might not like each other, but I don’t want to think of us as enemies either. You’re human, I’m human. We all have our problems. And we’re all similar in many ways. So tell me, what’s wrong?” I asked again.

“I don’t know. Everything.” She said as he started crying again. “I was just thinking about home.” She said and I nodded my head in understanding.

“You miss your family? You want to go back home?” I asked causing her to shake her head.

“No, I don’t. I’d do anything not to go back home. I don’t have a family. I don’t have a have a home.” She said causing me to be really confused.

“What are you talking about Shauna?” I asked. “Here, lets go sit somewhere and then you can tell me everything.” I said walking towards her bedroom as she followed me.

I could not believe that I was actually going to have a proper conversation with Shauna. I kind of felt good though, knowing I could actually be nice to someone I really didn’t like.
