chapter 28

Laura was young, intelligent, and her attractiveness could grace any billboard or magazine. Her long curly black hair, so smooth and silky, neat brow, small straight nose and flawless dark chocolate skin. That attractiveness would cause any man to commit adultery. Nina’s heart flickers at the thought of losing her husband to a younger woman and not just that but she was the one who had invited her into their home.

Nina sat there anxiously waiting, while her heart pondered on what could it possibly be that Laura wanted to disclose to her.

Twenty minutes later Nina was sitting in a room along with Laura, anxiously waiting to hear what Laura so desperately wanted to reveal to her.

Laura took the last drink from her glass, walked back to the desk and sat down, she looked at Nina, her heart pounding away. She needs to know the truth; she has to tell her but she’s puzzled over how to come out and say it. When she first thought of doing so she didn’t know it would be that difficult. It’s much harder than she had anticipated. She placed the glass on the desk and walked over to Nina.

“I want you to hear me out. It’s time you know the truth.”

An unsettling feeling began swelling inside Nina. Her heart started pounding at an increasingly rapid pace. She felt a sudden urge to go to the bathroom. She excused herself and rushed to the restroom. As she emptied her bladder, a slight headache came upon her. She knew it was the cost of the tension that was building up inside her from waiting. She flushed the toilet, washed her hands then hurried back inside.

Laura picked up from where she had stopped. And in the middle of the statement as she started saying, “My real name is Ch…..”she was abruptly interrupted. Mr. Phillips had a seizure and had to be rushed to the hospital.

Two days later her heels raped loudly as she hurried up the hospital corridor. “Is this Mr. Phillips room? I’m Mrs. Charles,” the nurse smiled “Yes, Mrs. Charles you can go right in.”

The gentleman turned immediately to face her, he looked nervous, tired and old. Nina stretched out her hand towards him.

“” Hello Mr. Phillips. How are you doing, I’m Nina Charles” He smiled and gave her a handshake.

“I know perfectly well who you are, my brain is still intact.”

Nina was a bit surprised, “Do you?” she responded.

“Yes, that was what I said.” He then continued “So what really brought you here?”

“You of course.”

Mr. Phillips looked up at her and smiled. He muttered under his breath.

“she’s just as beautiful as the first day I saw her.” he sat up straight and sighed

“Ok, so what can I help you with Ms. Curtis?

“Just a question I would like to ask you”.

“If I can help, I’ll be happy to assist you.”

Three days ago, I met with your daughter Laura, she wanted to tell me something and just as she attempted to, she was interrupted. Yesterday when I tried to reach her, I got to understand, she had an emergency, had to fly out and she will be away for some time. However, I’m of the opinion that since you are Laura’s adopted father, you might have some idea of what she might have wanted to share with me.”

His face suddenly showed the agony of a man in pain, he scratched his head and fell back against the pillows. She watched him puzzled by the torment she saw mixed with regrets.

“I’ve done such stupid things in my life I hope this isn’t one of them.” she heard him whisper under his breath. She noticed also that he was struggling to speak, she went closer to his bed, held unto his hand gently stroking it lovingly.

“Don’t torment yourself with things of the past.” Mr Phillips sat up straight and looked at her, his hands cold and shaking slightly.

“What if the stupid things destroyed people lives?” Would it be right for me to forget it?”

“Mr. Phillips, what could you have done to destroy someone’s life, you’ve been saving all of your life?” Nina suddenly wondered if the medication he was being given was getting to his head or his seizure had affected him mentally. What he was saying, wasn’t making any sense or unless he’s senile which wasn’t her understanding.

He pushed his body closer to the pillows and tightened his fits. “You really don’t understand.”

“Why don’t you help me?” Her voice was soft and gentle.

“Perhaps, maybe if you knew What I did, you wouldn’t be still sitting here listening to me.”

“Don’t be silly if that’s how you feel, I think you should tell me what’s bothering you?” he squeezed her hand, straightened up some more in the bed and stared at her for a long time before he spoke.

“I’m not sure if I can tell you.”

“Come on, why not? I don’t think it’s all that bad.”

“Believe me it is. His tone was exceedingly low.”

Nina can’t imagine anything that a man of his caliber could have done in his days to cause him such regrets. He has been a doctor for all his life and a man of integrity as far as the information she had gathered. She held his hand a little tighter as she waited. He squeezed her hand slowly with a warm tire smile and with a look of regret then spoke.

“What exactly did Laura say to you?”

“Nothing that makes sense.” she replied.

“Maybe not, but I still would like to hear her exact words.” Nina let go of his hand and raised herself up from off the chair. Her mind went over every word Laura spoke that day. She played back every sentence and dot every I, there was no way she could forget anything Laura mentioned that day. every word that came out of her mouth would be extremely important. She had a case to solve and she couldn’t afford to miss any clue.

“Oh……yes this is it.” He looked right at her and said anxiously. “I’m waiting.” Nina looked straight at him and spoke.

“These were her exact words. My real name is Ch..…..”

“Ok so she wanted to tell you her real name, her real name is Laura Charles.” Nina’s face washed blank with confusion.

“I….. don’t… understand,”

explain for me please.”

“She is your husband’s biological daughter.”

Every muscle of her body froze instantly. This isn’t happening, no this can’t be real, her thoughts drifted off for a moment as she recalled their earlier conversations and how concerned he was about something he had done in his past.

“Did you say Michael’s daughter?”

“Yes, I did.”

Does he know he has a daughter?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Then how did it happen, without him knowing?”

“Nowadays anything is possible.”

“Fill me in please.”

“One day when he came in for his regular examination, I removed some of his sperm and kept it frozen.”

“And then?”

“When I found the right woman to carry my child I did what I had to do.”

“Oh my God, no wonder you are so worried about what you’ve done.”

“What exactly did you do next?”

“I’m sure you heard of artificial insemination.”

“That what you do? Who is the mother? Can I assume she doesn’t know she has a daughter as well?

” He went silent for a short while before he responded.

“No, she doesn’t know about her either.” Nina was alarmed she scratched her head.

“Interesting. Is the mother still alive? And how much does Laura know?”

“Only what she needs to. ”

“What does that mean?

“She doesn’t know about her mother and yes her mother is still alive” Nina couldn’t make sense of what was being said. Her brain was actively searching for an answer.

“What the hell have you done?”

“I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt anyone.” She was annoyed at him apologizing and not saying exactly what it was he did.

“Enough is enough, I don’t want any more apology, I’m more interested in who the mother is, you kept repeating the same sentiment. What exactly have you done? As a matter of fact, who are you?” her tone was icy, he sighs and looked away from her.

“Maybe, the damage can be repaired.” He uttered.

“Well maybe, or maybe not, it all depends on what exactly transpired back then. And my assumption doesn’t sense it was something good.”

The door swing opened and a nurse walked in the room. It was time for Nina to leave. As soon as Nina and the nurse exited the room. Phillip got up out of the bed and walked over to a window where he stood staring out in space. In the utter darkness at the stars embedded into the black night, his wife’s voice echoing loudly in his head as if she was standing beside him.

“Phillip, I found them.” Her face all filled with excitement.

“Honey what are you talking about?”

“The parents for our children.”

“Honey, are you sure? Who are they?”

“Michael Charles, will be in your office tomorrow for his examination.”

“Mr. Phillips, why are you out of bed.? Are you ok? Can I get you something?” The nurse asked,

“I’m ok. just looking at the stars.”

“It’s late, please go back to bed.” She tucked him in and exited the room, and as soon as she did Mr. Phillips got up.

“I owe it to her to know the whole truth.” He looked at the clock, it was late but he still decided to give Laura a call. “Maybe after hearing me out, she’ll understand my reason pretty well. And doesn’t hold anything against me.” He picked up the phone and dialed her number. Laura picked up after three rings., with a muffle hello.

“Sweetie it’s me.”

“Father, are you alright?” She quickly turned the light on and sat up, blinked and looked at the clock. It was 1 o’clock in the morning in Florida.

“I’m fine, I have something I want to say to you.”

“Couldn’t it wait until tomorrow? What in heaven’s name are you doing up now?” Ok father, you have my full attention.”

Mrs. Charles came to see me and I told her Michael is your father.”

“You did? What was her response?”

“I think she was shocked.”

“I’m not surprised, who wouldn’t father?”

“There’s something else sweetie.” He sounded very worried.

“Father, can it wait?”

“I need to talk to you about something very important. I think it’s time you know the full story of how you came into this world and where both parents are concerned. Can you come down to see me this weekend?”

“I’ll let you know tomorrow, please go back to sleep.” They both hung up and at his ends, he felt much better. “Maybe after hearing me out, she will understand and things might just remain the same and it turns out I was worrying in vain. That would be awesome but suppose she doesn’t?
